DAY 365 — Anniversary Festival Mingle

Happy Day 365, Marina Nova!

Hear ye, hear ye! Inmates, prisoners, fellow underwater dwellers! Lend me your ears and hands and actually just bring all of you because we're having a ye olde Renaissance Faire to celebrate a full year in this bubble under the sea!

The dome has of course been decked out appropriately. Flickering torches light the pathways, interspersed with larger bonfires that you can cosy up to with that special someone - or perhaps just a glass of honey mead. Pennant banners hang across the gates and along the buildings, sporting the proud coat of arms of the prison (a lot of purple and octopi, for some reason) and many of the clothing stores offer time-appropriate options for those of you who still knows how to have fun. The kiosk has even been re-imagined into a castle.

Many areas within the dome has activities to partake in and, if you're skilled or lucky or both, prizes to win!

Sector 5 Gamegrounds: What better way to show your bravery than by participating in a series of tests of strength and cunning? Sector 5 provides the inmates with a chance to try such varied sports as varpa, caber tossing, ring toss or the very dignified sport of rövkrok, a type of wrestling that requires skill as well as no sense of shame. Not tough enough for you? There are also friendly foam weapons and armor available for those who want to engage in a chivalrous bout of hand to hand combat, test your archery skills — or maybe convince another prisoner to give you a piggyback ride and go jousting!

Competitors that do well enough and show outstanding bravery may be rewarded with a handful of rehab points, or a personalized pennant — or maybe a kiss from the lord or lady of your choosing!

Less violent activities: Not into skewering your neighbors on spears? Maybe you'd rather relax with a game of knucklebones, pick up sticks or Nine Men's Morris. Boards and instructions are readily available in several areas. If you're more creatively inclined there's also activity tables on offer where you can create your own coat of arms, bind yourself a flower crown or learn the art of illumination.

Food: The food carts in sector 0 are now carrying food fit for the occasion. Whole roasted pigs and poultry, wild rabbit in plum sauce, thick beef stews smelling of rich saffron, roasted vegetables (no potatoes here, no sir!) and cream-stewed cabbage for the vegetarians among us. If you're still hungry there's saffron pancake, ginger and clove cookies or bread pudding with raisins for dessert. There's plenty of mulled wine, honey mead, foaming beer, honeyd applewater and lingonberry juice to wash it down with. Enjoy!

Dance: As is custom, there will be a dance at the beach at the end of the day. Great fires will roar and a band of robots will strike up music suitable for dancing! Dress up in your finest satin and velvet, brush the extrement off your shoes and grab a partner!

Enjoy!

[She blushes a bit.] Ah! Because they had so many types, I couldn't decide! I've never seen so many kinds of flowers together.

I don't think I have either. Though in general there's a lot to this festival I haven't especially come across before.

I've never seen most of anything! It's incredible!

I can't say I'm at all pleased or in agreement with our circumstances, but it's been nice to experience some new things. Same goes for meeting others.

Back at home, I couldn't see new things or new people very often. So I'm trying to be optimistic.

Let's try to weave one flower now.

Fair enough.

Mm. Whenever you're ready, then.

[And here she weaves a daisy slowly so he can see the way she does it. Her knots are sloppy, but sturdy.]

[He watches in turn, gaze going between her hands and his own. Maybe it's because she's going slowly, or maybe since he actually has someone instructing him (spoiler: it's both), that he succeeds. He fumbled from the start early on on his own.]

[A bit of a laugh (What Is Praise).]

Only because you're a patient teacher.

You think? Well, it's bad to be impatient while making flower crowns. You need to take it easy or you'll ruin it.

A-Ah. . . that does make sense. I should have been more so when I tried earlier. [. . .] Although I've never done this before at all, so maybe that's more so why. For the most part I'm not much of an artist.

Maybe it's a little bit of this and a little bit of that. But I'm not an artist either, I've just been making these for a while now.

So maybe like a hobby?

What's a hobby?

More like a child's play. Some kids play with balls, some climb up trees, some use dolls, some gather herbs and fruit and flowers.

[that's an unusual question]

It's something you enjoy spending time doing. For example I really like to cook, as well as swim. [he smiles a bit to her] What you listed can also be hobbies, and not necessarily just something kids do.

Cooking is more of a responsibility. Can work and some house chores also be a hobby?

Responsibility. . .? [he just blinks] It's not really that way for me. It's fun. I like trying out new recipes especially, which I've been able to do here.

I think so. A hobby is what you make of an activity. If you enjoy tidying and such, then that can count.

It is fun! But it's also something you have to do to survive. Work is the same: can be fun, but it's responsibility.

This place has too much food, so it's a challenge to cook here. Too many options. And machines to use!

It really does have quite a bit of food that I've never seen or tasted before.

Machines?

It's really surprising!

Like, um, the fire-less ovens, and the glass thing that heats on its own to put pots and pans on. And the giant cold box, too.

You sound like you're from a ways back. . .

Yup! Those are the ones.

I do? [She doesn't know what he means with that.] Everyone from my country who's here find it so weird, but useful.

Yeah. That you're from back in history, I mean. Those appliances are just every-day things for me. [. . .] Though I really am not very surprised. The people here come from all types of worlds and time periods.

So these things are sorta from the future? Amazing. I can't even understand the little drawings around the button-lever things to get them to do stuff. Your place must be so advanced.
