DAY 365 — Anniversary Festival Mingle

Happy Day 365, Marina Nova!

Hear ye, hear ye! Inmates, prisoners, fellow underwater dwellers! Lend me your ears and hands and actually just bring all of you because we're having a ye olde Renaissance Faire to celebrate a full year in this bubble under the sea!

The dome has of course been decked out appropriately. Flickering torches light the pathways, interspersed with larger bonfires that you can cosy up to with that special someone - or perhaps just a glass of honey mead. Pennant banners hang across the gates and along the buildings, sporting the proud coat of arms of the prison (a lot of purple and octopi, for some reason) and many of the clothing stores offer time-appropriate options for those of you who still knows how to have fun. The kiosk has even been re-imagined into a castle.

Many areas within the dome has activities to partake in and, if you're skilled or lucky or both, prizes to win!

Sector 5 Gamegrounds: What better way to show your bravery than by participating in a series of tests of strength and cunning? Sector 5 provides the inmates with a chance to try such varied sports as varpa, caber tossing, ring toss or the very dignified sport of rövkrok, a type of wrestling that requires skill as well as no sense of shame. Not tough enough for you? There are also friendly foam weapons and armor available for those who want to engage in a chivalrous bout of hand to hand combat, test your archery skills — or maybe convince another prisoner to give you a piggyback ride and go jousting!

Competitors that do well enough and show outstanding bravery may be rewarded with a handful of rehab points, or a personalized pennant — or maybe a kiss from the lord or lady of your choosing!

Less violent activities: Not into skewering your neighbors on spears? Maybe you'd rather relax with a game of knucklebones, pick up sticks or Nine Men's Morris. Boards and instructions are readily available in several areas. If you're more creatively inclined there's also activity tables on offer where you can create your own coat of arms, bind yourself a flower crown or learn the art of illumination.

Food: The food carts in sector 0 are now carrying food fit for the occasion. Whole roasted pigs and poultry, wild rabbit in plum sauce, thick beef stews smelling of rich saffron, roasted vegetables (no potatoes here, no sir!) and cream-stewed cabbage for the vegetarians among us. If you're still hungry there's saffron pancake, ginger and clove cookies or bread pudding with raisins for dessert. There's plenty of mulled wine, honey mead, foaming beer, honeyd applewater and lingonberry juice to wash it down with. Enjoy!

Dance: As is custom, there will be a dance at the beach at the end of the day. Great fires will roar and a band of robots will strike up music suitable for dancing! Dress up in your finest satin and velvet, brush the extrement off your shoes and grab a partner!

Enjoy!

"Definitely not up for rovkrok." Ever. "But I think I could be persuaded to try archery." She grins, "I've never shot a bow and arrow before!"

[OOC: Fun fact, in a previous game, Robin Hood trained Martha in shooting long bows.]

"Archery it is," he smiles, starting to head over to it. "To be honest, I haven't much experience with bows either - I'm more of a gun man - but we can have a go! At least we won't be able to hurt each other with these rubber things!"

[OOC: Cool! I know pretty much nothing about archery, but I guess we can fluff through it!]

"I only know what I had to learn when we were chasing those things down in London. The Doctor and I. And really, it was more me handing him arrows than anything." She was better with a gun too.

Arm in arm, they make their way to the archery range. Martha drops his arm to go pick out a bow. She senses this is actually going to be more difficult than she thought when she tests the tension.

"Chasing what things down in London?" he asks, ever curious, especially for any tales of the Doctor. And trying to imagine what creatures would necessitate a bow and arrow instead of a usually more efficient gun. (Though he guessed it could be just a quirk of the Doctor's, not liking guns!)

He checks out a bow for himself - not nearly as much trouble with tension with his upper body strength - and glances over at Martha with a smile. "I think they've got some smaller ones over there?"

Just spent a lot of tiem researching what that was and according to DVD commentary, the writers...

((OOC Wanted to see how absurd they could get with Martha and the Doctor doing something without advancing the story. ... So this is the best I have for you.))

"Oh it was... nothing really. I mean, at the time it was huge. But shortly after that we were transported back in time to the 60s which was a bigger adventure.

((OOC: Heh, sorry - I realised too late you probably didn't know the answer to that any more than I did! Though, rewatching Blink isn't exactly a hardship, at least! Not sure if I've ever watched the commentary - might have to give it a go sometime!))

"The 60s?" he asks, completely distracted from the archery despite the bow still in his hands. "I don't think I've ever heard about that! Where did he take you?"

[OOC: I like to watch the commentary because the writers will often give more information about Martha. Or just expand on something that's already known.]

"He didn't. Are you familiar with the weeping angels?" It actually is an interesting story, minus the fact that the whole thing was rather confusing to her.

He straightens, a frown line forming between his eyes.

"I am. You got caught by an angel?"

"We did. The TARDIS took us to some old mansion, and suddenly it was 1969." Though she laughs, she sounds a little bitter underneath it all. "We were able to get out though. Eventually. A girl named Sally Sparrow helped us. Gave us a file back when we were chasing those things in London. It had all the information we needed."

"Ah, a temporal loop. Always a bit dodgy, those, but it obviously did the trick that time. How long did you get stuck for?"

"Couple months. I had to get a job in a shop just to support him." And by the look on her face, she didn't enjoy it one bit.

"Ouch." He's full of sympathy there. Both for having to labour at something so mundane and at the fact that the Doctor unsurprisingly had apparently not done much to help.

He grins, hefting his bow. "Makes being stuck here seem like a real party in comparison, eh?"

"To be fair, he was actively trying to get us back to the right place. Just... you know how that is for the Doctor."

She smiles then. "A bit yeah. Less rampant racism for one. And better company all around."

"Yeah, I know." The Doctor just doesn't work on the same level as ordinary human beings, or even immortal human beings like Jack, who isn't exactly ordinary in any way.

He nods vehemently at the racism comment. He lived through the sixties too and okay, he's not black, but... "And a lot less prejudice against omnisexuals too! You know, the sixties - for that 'free love' crap - they were a terribly straightlaced lot in some respects too!"

"That being said, 1913 was ten times worse," Martha replied, finally choosing a bow. She grabs a quiver of arrows as well and walks over to the target area.

"The only work I could get there was a maid in a boarding school, and the boys were horrible."

"Oh yeah, that sounds like a ball," he says dryly, with plenty of sympathy, and joins her, eyeing up the target next to hers.

"Shall we, then?"

"Even better? The Doctor was human and didn't know who I was other than his servant. No memories of his life before. He even fell in love with the nurse who worked at the school."

Martha nods then, and notches an arrow.

"On three?"

He glances at her, because he's heard some of this before but now she's put these two instances in quick succession and he can throw in the year she spent walking the Earth for him too... "You really did get a bit of a raw deal with him, didn't you?" he observes, taking aim. "I'm kinda surprised you stuck with him as long as you did."

He counts to three and then fires.

He misses his target completely.

Martha doesn't fare much better. She hit a target... but not the intended one. She reaches for another arrow.

"Well, the adventure was fantastic. For every bad one, there was a good one. Or more, the bad and the good tended to equal out. Not always, but I count Shakespeare as one of my best trips, and even that wasn't perfect. Besides, I never intended to stay with him forever. I had my schooling to finish. My family. I had a life to live back home. I just wanted him to treat me... better."

She grins as she notches the next arrow.

"The adventures were fun though."

He laughs at the fact that they're both apparently as bad at this as each other, and gets his next arrow in place too, then gives her a rueful glance. "Yes, they were. I still miss that, you know. The excitement of just landing somewhere, not knowing what you're going to get."

He grins, and counts to three again before firing. He actually hits his target this time, though only just grazing the edge, so it doesn't stick or anything.

Her arrow skitters across the grass. Martha laughs at it, clearly having fun even though she's a terrible shot.

"I have to say, nothing compares to knowing that you are the Dark Lady in those Shakespeare sonnets that every kid has to study in school. And while they're all theorizing on who she could possibly be... It's quite a position to be in."
