DAY 365 — Anniversary Festival Mingle

Happy Day 365, Marina Nova!

Hear ye, hear ye! Inmates, prisoners, fellow underwater dwellers! Lend me your ears and hands and actually just bring all of you because we're having a ye olde Renaissance Faire to celebrate a full year in this bubble under the sea!

The dome has of course been decked out appropriately. Flickering torches light the pathways, interspersed with larger bonfires that you can cosy up to with that special someone - or perhaps just a glass of honey mead. Pennant banners hang across the gates and along the buildings, sporting the proud coat of arms of the prison (a lot of purple and octopi, for some reason) and many of the clothing stores offer time-appropriate options for those of you who still knows how to have fun. The kiosk has even been re-imagined into a castle.

Many areas within the dome has activities to partake in and, if you're skilled or lucky or both, prizes to win!

Sector 5 Gamegrounds: What better way to show your bravery than by participating in a series of tests of strength and cunning? Sector 5 provides the inmates with a chance to try such varied sports as varpa, caber tossing, ring toss or the very dignified sport of rövkrok, a type of wrestling that requires skill as well as no sense of shame. Not tough enough for you? There are also friendly foam weapons and armor available for those who want to engage in a chivalrous bout of hand to hand combat, test your archery skills — or maybe convince another prisoner to give you a piggyback ride and go jousting!

Competitors that do well enough and show outstanding bravery may be rewarded with a handful of rehab points, or a personalized pennant — or maybe a kiss from the lord or lady of your choosing!

Less violent activities: Not into skewering your neighbors on spears? Maybe you'd rather relax with a game of knucklebones, pick up sticks or Nine Men's Morris. Boards and instructions are readily available in several areas. If you're more creatively inclined there's also activity tables on offer where you can create your own coat of arms, bind yourself a flower crown or learn the art of illumination.

Food: The food carts in sector 0 are now carrying food fit for the occasion. Whole roasted pigs and poultry, wild rabbit in plum sauce, thick beef stews smelling of rich saffron, roasted vegetables (no potatoes here, no sir!) and cream-stewed cabbage for the vegetarians among us. If you're still hungry there's saffron pancake, ginger and clove cookies or bread pudding with raisins for dessert. There's plenty of mulled wine, honey mead, foaming beer, honeyd applewater and lingonberry juice to wash it down with. Enjoy!

Dance: As is custom, there will be a dance at the beach at the end of the day. Great fires will roar and a band of robots will strike up music suitable for dancing! Dress up in your finest satin and velvet, brush the extrement off your shoes and grab a partner!

Enjoy!

I don't think any of us would disagree with that. [Its an attitude that reminds him a bit of the Doctor. He gets enough alien culture shock at Torchwood to know for a fact that it extends both ways.] Why are there so many humans here? I know there are other worlds, other species and planets out there. But it mostly seems to be us in this place.

Hmmn... chance, perhaps. Or payback. Or maybe you've forgotten that some of you have their own room and don't play well with others.

[ Sector 6. ]

Or maybe all three. [He knows humans can be bigger monsters than the monsters themselves.] There's something I wanted to ask you, actually, but I'm not sure if you'll answer me. About payback. About why Jack went away.

Ask and we'll see if I can answer. [ It's mostly an issue of whether she can, not if she wants to. It gets very lonely in the office, sometimes. Chatting with outsiders is the most fun she can have with her clothes on. ]

[He almost doesn't know where to start. He has too many questions about what happened and finally he just asks the only thing he can think to say.]

Why? [Why did he leave, why did he come back, why does he have new memories, why did any of it have to happen at all?]

[ She falls silent for a moment, picking at the flowers. Believe it or not but her heart aches for their prisoners in times like these. They hurt so easily. ]

There is no reason. It's nothing personal. Sometimes it's a mistake, sometimes it's part of a greater program... but it's not personal. Do you understand?

[ Personally, she cares. Professionally, none of you matter enough to be cared about. ]

[A long silence as he processes it and tries to decide how honest he wants to be. Then he asks, in a very small voice,] It wasn't my fault, then?

Oh, sweetheart, no. Not at all — why would you think that? [ Motherly, sweet, like she's telling a child he's not to blame for his parents divorce. ]

The timing of it. And the way he came back so soon. [He doesn't know if he believes her or not. It would probably be easier to but she's hard to read.]

I promise you, it's not personal. Do you really think we're that petty? [ They don't have the time or resources or need to dally in the personal lives of their inmates, other than as personal entertainment. ]

I think you pay more attention to what we get up to in here than you let on. And I know in your position I'd have a hard time not playing favorites. Or maybe that's just another of those human characteristics.l

I'm a professional, Ianto. What I do out here has no meaning on what I do in there. [ Sharp, at least compared to how she usually speaks. ]

Besides... if I was playing favorites he wouldn't have disappeared.

[He looks genuinly surprised, then smiles.] Thank you. I believe you. [He remembers their last conversation. She takes pride in her professionalism. He'd been so caught up in hurting, in wanting to find a way to make sense of it all, of feeling guilty that he'd overlooked that.] I don't know if it means much to hear, but even with that, even with the dying and all the other bad things, my life is still better here than it was at home. Thank you for that.

[ She smiles, reaches over to give him a fond pat on the shoulder. ] Thank you for saying that, deerheart. We do want what's best for you, even if it doesn't always turn out that way.

For what it's worth, I am sorry for what's happened to you here.

Aside from Jack vanishing none of the things that have happened to me have had anyrhing to do with you. They haven't been your fault. [Spike attacked him on his own. Tyki tortured and dismembered him for the same reasons. None of the odd events or strange disasters caused by the people who run this place have hurt him to that extent. If bad things have happened it's because people locked up in here with him chose to make them happen.] And it's still better than my fate at home. I don't get to come back to life after that.

Then we'll make sure you stay here. [ Perhaps contradictory to what she said earlier about personal and professional being strictly divided, but this falls in line with what they want anyway. It's not like he can truly leave, just deconnect. ]

I've grown quite fond of you, Ianto Jones.

The feeling is mutual. [He surprises himself a bit when he says it, but it's true. He likes these conversations. They are nothing if not interesting. He puts a few finishing touches on his flower crown and offers it to her - it wouldn't really go with his shirt, after all.]

[ It doesn't matter in the end, whether he loves her or loathes her, but it still feels nice to hear that she's inspiring some positive feelings in at least some of the inmates. They do care, the way a scientist cares about a white mouse among hundreds of white mice.

She smiles when he offers her the flower crown, accepts it and places it gingerly on her head. ]

Oh, that's so sweet of you — thank you! Truly! I will treasure it.
