DAY 365 — Anniversary Festival Mingle

Happy Day 365, Marina Nova!

Hear ye, hear ye! Inmates, prisoners, fellow underwater dwellers! Lend me your ears and hands and actually just bring all of you because we're having a ye olde Renaissance Faire to celebrate a full year in this bubble under the sea!

The dome has of course been decked out appropriately. Flickering torches light the pathways, interspersed with larger bonfires that you can cosy up to with that special someone - or perhaps just a glass of honey mead. Pennant banners hang across the gates and along the buildings, sporting the proud coat of arms of the prison (a lot of purple and octopi, for some reason) and many of the clothing stores offer time-appropriate options for those of you who still knows how to have fun. The kiosk has even been re-imagined into a castle.

Many areas within the dome has activities to partake in and, if you're skilled or lucky or both, prizes to win!

Sector 5 Gamegrounds: What better way to show your bravery than by participating in a series of tests of strength and cunning? Sector 5 provides the inmates with a chance to try such varied sports as varpa, caber tossing, ring toss or the very dignified sport of rövkrok, a type of wrestling that requires skill as well as no sense of shame. Not tough enough for you? There are also friendly foam weapons and armor available for those who want to engage in a chivalrous bout of hand to hand combat, test your archery skills — or maybe convince another prisoner to give you a piggyback ride and go jousting!

Competitors that do well enough and show outstanding bravery may be rewarded with a handful of rehab points, or a personalized pennant — or maybe a kiss from the lord or lady of your choosing!

Less violent activities: Not into skewering your neighbors on spears? Maybe you'd rather relax with a game of knucklebones, pick up sticks or Nine Men's Morris. Boards and instructions are readily available in several areas. If you're more creatively inclined there's also activity tables on offer where you can create your own coat of arms, bind yourself a flower crown or learn the art of illumination.

Food: The food carts in sector 0 are now carrying food fit for the occasion. Whole roasted pigs and poultry, wild rabbit in plum sauce, thick beef stews smelling of rich saffron, roasted vegetables (no potatoes here, no sir!) and cream-stewed cabbage for the vegetarians among us. If you're still hungry there's saffron pancake, ginger and clove cookies or bread pudding with raisins for dessert. There's plenty of mulled wine, honey mead, foaming beer, honeyd applewater and lingonberry juice to wash it down with. Enjoy!

Dance: As is custom, there will be a dance at the beach at the end of the day. Great fires will roar and a band of robots will strike up music suitable for dancing! Dress up in your finest satin and velvet, brush the extrement off your shoes and grab a partner!

Enjoy!

Well, Jack doesn't have pets, unless you count the pteradactyl he used to keep in the Hub, but that was mostly to stop her going out and eating the citizens of Cardiff.

"I'll have you know there's absolutely nothing little about my tights!" he grins. The day's antics have put him in such a good mood he's able to (mostly) ignore the fact that this is one of the people responsible for them all being trapped here and just enjoy the flirting. Why not? She is gorgeous, after all, at least in this form.

Exactly her point. We can't have you go out eating people in Cardiff, Jack. You're safer here.

"Oh, I don't know about that. I'm sure you could go up a size."

Has she been checking him out? Maybe. For purely scientific reasons, of course. Dillydallying in fornication is not something she's that curious about, to be honest.

But he doesn't eat people! (Not in the traditional sense, at least! He does have quite a predilection for oral...)

He grins wickedly at her comment. "Oh, but that would mean they wouldn't be so deliciously tight!" he points out airily, and gestures round at the drinks stalls. "What's your pleasure, my lady?" he asks, admittedly rather curious to see what she'll choose.

People, animals, plants... it's all life. Who can make a hierarchy, anyway?

"A very good point!" She giggles, quite happily. "What do you recommend, good sir? This is more part of your culture than mine, after all."

"Well, what's the closest to the sort of thing you normally drink?" he asks casually.

Fishing for information about her species? You bet!

"Ah, I see what you're doing." She gives him an amused look but doesn't seem too worried about the prying.

"If I wanted to drink what I usually drink, I wouldn't be out here, all dressed up! It's about new experiences, don't you think?"

He grins, completely unashamed. He may be having fun, but of course he's going to try and pump her for information too.

"Fair enough," he shrugs, and glances round. "Why don't we both try the lingonberry juice? I've never actually had that before either, and it sounds refreshing after all that duelling!"

"A fine suggestion."

Tart but with a lingering sweetness, it is a good choice after so much physical exercise. She procures them two glasses — she is, for all intents and purposes, the queen here after all — and takes a sip after handing one of them to Jack.

"I spoke to your partner, earlier."

"Thank you, my lady!" he grins, taking the glass and trying the juice. And then taking a long drink of it. "Mmm, that hits the spot!"

He lifts an eyebrow at comment, assuming it's leading somewhere. "Oh yeah?"

He wonders if she's got a bit of a thing for Ianto. She does seem to like talking to him.

She does have a bit of a thing for Ianto, but Jack has little reason to worry. It's like a scientist having a favorite little white mouse, or a preferred bacteria cultivation. Can't really play favorites, but she can drop by once in awhile and chat. No harm in that.

"Mmhm. He's a very nice young man. You're lucky, Captain."

"I know I am." Does he sound smug? He sounds smug, and looks it too.

On a thought, he quirks an eyebrow and gives her a sideways glance. "I suppose I should thank you. For bringing him here in the first place."

"You're welcome." She nods, taking thanks where she can find them. Although... she tilts her head, looking back at him.

"Though I can't pretend it was entirely intentional. Sometimes I think you overestimate how much thought we put into who comes and goes."

So maybe Ianto said something about how he thought it was his fault.

The other eyebrow goes up to match the first. He's well aware that Ianto blames himself for getting him taken away, and isn't surprised that Ianto might have mentioned it to Mary.

"You mean, you really are that incompetent that all those glitches and 'losses' are just accidents?" he asks dryly, clearly nowhere near convinced.

"Hey now... don't judge us too harshly. This is a delicate operation." She gives him a look, perhaps a little admonishing but still well on the side of playful.

"How much do you know about computers, Captain Harkness?"

"More than most people here, I should think." Given his fifty-first century upbringing. "But nowhere near anything like what you've got running this little operation, so if you were looking for a little IT assistance, I'm afraid you'll have to look elsewhere!"

"Aw, it's sweet of you to think I was asking for help." Genuinely sweet. Such a charming man.

"You're right that it's complicated. Every breath, every heartbeat... every drop of rain. We pride ourselves on believability here and sometimes things go a little... strange. That's the thing with technology, I suppose. Has a mind of its own."

And sometimes they're just bored in the control room. That's usually when it rains rubber ducks.

"It sounds like you could use some help," he says pointedly, very much enjoying the game of bait and tag. "I mean, yes, obviously it's an incredibly complex system, but you do seem to... run into rather a lot of difficulties controlling it!"

"No one's been seriously injured yet." She shrugs. Those are good results if you ask her.

"And, I must admit... at times it's not a mistake at all. We like to have fun in the office just as much as anyone else."

He really wasn't expecting her to admit that in so many words and it makes him pause for a moment, reassessing.

"Is that so..." he drawls, after a long sip of juice to give him time. He shifts his weight slightly, tilting his head curiously. "So what's given you the most entertainment, so far?"

She takes a moment to think it over with a thoughtful hum and an equally thoughtful sip of juice.

"The rubber duck rain was a lot of fun to watch. Not my idea, mind you, but that doesn't matter. It is a team effort after all."

He can't help but snort with light laughter at her delight in such a simple thing.

"So what about the things like when we got swapped into other people's bodies?" he asks curiously. "Was that really a glitch, or was that you mucking around with us too?"

"Oh, that thing..." She pauses, as if chewing on her answer, if it's entirely kosher of her to be talking like this but they do so much exciting work and rarely get any sort of credit for it that she can't help herself. She's a nerd, okay? A nerd who never gets to nerd out.

"Well, since I'm sure you've already figured it out... that's usually on purpose. We do want to give you ample opportunity to learn more about yourself and each other and what better way to do that than allow you to literally walk a mile in someone else's shoes?"

"And did you get what you wanted from it?" he asks, with a faint note of bitterness. "Did you have fun watching us go round vamping out and almost killing our boyfriends, or getting poisoned with dairy?"

Jack hasn't had a particularly great experience with body-swapping so far.
