DAY 365 — Anniversary Festival Mingle

Happy Day 365, Marina Nova!

Hear ye, hear ye! Inmates, prisoners, fellow underwater dwellers! Lend me your ears and hands and actually just bring all of you because we're having a ye olde Renaissance Faire to celebrate a full year in this bubble under the sea!

The dome has of course been decked out appropriately. Flickering torches light the pathways, interspersed with larger bonfires that you can cosy up to with that special someone - or perhaps just a glass of honey mead. Pennant banners hang across the gates and along the buildings, sporting the proud coat of arms of the prison (a lot of purple and octopi, for some reason) and many of the clothing stores offer time-appropriate options for those of you who still knows how to have fun. The kiosk has even been re-imagined into a castle.

Many areas within the dome has activities to partake in and, if you're skilled or lucky or both, prizes to win!

Sector 5 Gamegrounds: What better way to show your bravery than by participating in a series of tests of strength and cunning? Sector 5 provides the inmates with a chance to try such varied sports as varpa, caber tossing, ring toss or the very dignified sport of rövkrok, a type of wrestling that requires skill as well as no sense of shame. Not tough enough for you? There are also friendly foam weapons and armor available for those who want to engage in a chivalrous bout of hand to hand combat, test your archery skills — or maybe convince another prisoner to give you a piggyback ride and go jousting!

Competitors that do well enough and show outstanding bravery may be rewarded with a handful of rehab points, or a personalized pennant — or maybe a kiss from the lord or lady of your choosing!

Less violent activities: Not into skewering your neighbors on spears? Maybe you'd rather relax with a game of knucklebones, pick up sticks or Nine Men's Morris. Boards and instructions are readily available in several areas. If you're more creatively inclined there's also activity tables on offer where you can create your own coat of arms, bind yourself a flower crown or learn the art of illumination.

Food: The food carts in sector 0 are now carrying food fit for the occasion. Whole roasted pigs and poultry, wild rabbit in plum sauce, thick beef stews smelling of rich saffron, roasted vegetables (no potatoes here, no sir!) and cream-stewed cabbage for the vegetarians among us. If you're still hungry there's saffron pancake, ginger and clove cookies or bread pudding with raisins for dessert. There's plenty of mulled wine, honey mead, foaming beer, honeyd applewater and lingonberry juice to wash it down with. Enjoy!

Dance: As is custom, there will be a dance at the beach at the end of the day. Great fires will roar and a band of robots will strike up music suitable for dancing! Dress up in your finest satin and velvet, brush the extrement off your shoes and grab a partner!

Enjoy!

Why not? [Sarah looks at him as though he has two heads. How could anyone not like dressing up in costumes.

But she focuses on the game instead.]

Sure. I'd love to learn.

[Because it's stupid...

Not going to say that. Nope. He shakes his head and starts sorting the pieces for the game instead.]

You can start. First, we each place one piece at a time on the board. If you manage to line up any three of yours, horizontally or diagonally, then I lose one of mine. Same goes for me.

[Nope. Don't say that to Sarah. Who is so excited to be dressed up!]

That sounds simple enough. [Sarah you sweet summer child.] Right. I can place it anywhere? [She waited for his confirmation before placing her marker in the most obvious spot she possibly could.]

That's right. [Nico sets his first piece down, in a not so obvious spot. He's not the greatest strategist, but he knows how to play a game. (Spending a great number of years doing nothing but playing them helps.)]

That concept is pretty simple. You win when you have your opponent down to two pieces.

Two pieces. Got it.

{Sarah places a second piece next to her first.]

[Too obvious. He places his next piece next to hers, blocking her from forming a mill.]

Do you have games like this on your world?

Probably. I don't play games much though. You sort of need someone else to play with.

Yeah. That's true. [More the reason why he'd collected card games and memorized everything about them, but didn't actually play. The same was somewhat true for game like this as well. He'd picked up most of his knowledge from watching others play and memorizing how it was done, not so much from playing himself.]

And even if it does exist in my world, it's not something Irene would have had. We had Monopoly and Sorry. Games like that.

Hmm. I've played Monopoly. [Another one of those vague, strange memories where he's not sure when or where he played it, but he knows it sounds familiar.] But the last few years I haven't really played any games.

Yeah... that's where I am. Last few years... no games.

[Nico places his past piece on the board.] Well, if you ever want to play sometime, I'd be up for it.

Thank you Nico! I'll let you know.

[She looks down at the board and groans...] I don't think there's anyway for me to win this.

((OOC: Now I want Sarah to start a board game club...))

Sure there is. [Well... maybe not this one.] You just have to think about where you're going and where you want to end up.

((OOC: He would join.))

[Sarah's not so good at that.]

Oh. Like Chess. I'm no good at that one either.

[She's terrible at thinking about three moves ahead much less one.]

((OOC: It's going to happen. Some day.))

No? [So strategy games were probably out.] What games do you like? [He may not be familiar with some of them, but he did spend seven decades in a casino that was all games all the time.]

Well... [She thinks to what they play as a family sometimes.] Monopoly's pretty awful, but Sorry's not too bad. And I do like Clue. I'm not too bad at Checkers.

[He actually likes Monopoly...] Well ... I know checkers. [And while he doesn't know what Sorry is, he probably would recognize the game under another name if he saw it.] But I would like to learn some new ones.

Then we can tell everyone to bring a game from home. Since everyone's from different places, I'm sure there's different games. Or at least things similar to things from home.

[She smiles.]

Excellent. This is going to be so much fun!

[She hurriedly stands, knocking over the board.] Oops... let me just... [She starts picking the pieces up.]

Right. Sorry. Too enthusiastic.
