DAY 365 — Anniversary Festival Mingle

Happy Day 365, Marina Nova!

Hear ye, hear ye! Inmates, prisoners, fellow underwater dwellers! Lend me your ears and hands and actually just bring all of you because we're having a ye olde Renaissance Faire to celebrate a full year in this bubble under the sea!

The dome has of course been decked out appropriately. Flickering torches light the pathways, interspersed with larger bonfires that you can cosy up to with that special someone - or perhaps just a glass of honey mead. Pennant banners hang across the gates and along the buildings, sporting the proud coat of arms of the prison (a lot of purple and octopi, for some reason) and many of the clothing stores offer time-appropriate options for those of you who still knows how to have fun. The kiosk has even been re-imagined into a castle.

Many areas within the dome has activities to partake in and, if you're skilled or lucky or both, prizes to win!

Sector 5 Gamegrounds: What better way to show your bravery than by participating in a series of tests of strength and cunning? Sector 5 provides the inmates with a chance to try such varied sports as varpa, caber tossing, ring toss or the very dignified sport of rövkrok, a type of wrestling that requires skill as well as no sense of shame. Not tough enough for you? There are also friendly foam weapons and armor available for those who want to engage in a chivalrous bout of hand to hand combat, test your archery skills — or maybe convince another prisoner to give you a piggyback ride and go jousting!

Competitors that do well enough and show outstanding bravery may be rewarded with a handful of rehab points, or a personalized pennant — or maybe a kiss from the lord or lady of your choosing!

Less violent activities: Not into skewering your neighbors on spears? Maybe you'd rather relax with a game of knucklebones, pick up sticks or Nine Men's Morris. Boards and instructions are readily available in several areas. If you're more creatively inclined there's also activity tables on offer where you can create your own coat of arms, bind yourself a flower crown or learn the art of illumination.

Food: The food carts in sector 0 are now carrying food fit for the occasion. Whole roasted pigs and poultry, wild rabbit in plum sauce, thick beef stews smelling of rich saffron, roasted vegetables (no potatoes here, no sir!) and cream-stewed cabbage for the vegetarians among us. If you're still hungry there's saffron pancake, ginger and clove cookies or bread pudding with raisins for dessert. There's plenty of mulled wine, honey mead, foaming beer, honeyd applewater and lingonberry juice to wash it down with. Enjoy!

Dance: As is custom, there will be a dance at the beach at the end of the day. Great fires will roar and a band of robots will strike up music suitable for dancing! Dress up in your finest satin and velvet, brush the extrement off your shoes and grab a partner!

Enjoy!

One of the perks with being the boss around here. You can make yourself blend in, no matter where you are.

"Thank you! That's so sweet of you to say." She smiles, bright. "You look very nice too. Are you having fun?"

"Oh very much so! I LOVE getting the chance to dress up. And it looks like there's plenty of games to play and things to do."

Sarah's smile grows. "And thank you. It was a tough choice figuring out the perfect dress."

"Oh, yes - there are so many choices out there!" Courtesy of her and Smith, of course, but no need to brag about that.

"Maybe we should have these parties more often, hmn?"

"We seem to have so many parties. I'm not used to parties actually. Never really went to them back home. But I have friends here. And it's not so bad. You know... the parties aren't. Being chased by dinosaurs and some of the other stuff? I don't like that."

"Hmmn, well, if you have to choose between parties and dinosaurs I suppose it's not much of a choice at all." Though unfortunately, you can't have one without the other.

"What else do you like about being here?"

Stranger danger Sarah! Except she's oblivious.

"Well... I have friends here. And it's still weird because I spent so much time alone back home. But people here don't make fun of me."

It's fine! It's fine. You're already in her white van. It's too late.

"Mmmn, they are nice like that, aren't they? Most of the people here seem to behave just fine."

"They really do. Funny considering we're all prisoners. But they're all nicer than any of the non-prisoners I met back home."

Besides, Sarah's still not sure how she's considered a prisoner.

"Funny how that happens, isn't it?" Maybe the definition of criminal has something to do with this.

"I'm glad you're enjoying yourself, Sarah. It's very important."

She looks confused then.

"It is? Why's that?... Who are you?"

"I've been looking after you for awhile now."

Danger Sarah Williams!

"How come?"

"Your job...?"

She drops her crown as alarm slowly starts creeping across her features.

"Oh. You... you work for the prison. I... why've you been looking for me. Did I do something wrong? Am I in trouble? I haven't done anything since I died."

"No, no! Oh, sweetie, you haven't done anything wrong!"

Careful, cooing, like a mother consoling an upset child.

"I'm just visiting. That's all."

"Do you look after everybody?"

...

And more importantly...

"Why did you let me die if you're looking after me?"

"Me and my partner, yes." Although Smith isn't quite as social as Mary is, most of the time. The mention of the drowning has her frowning.

"I really am sorry that happened to you, deerheart... but you're all better now, aren't you? Right as rain."

"Yes... no. No... I'm not right as rain. I don't like rain all that much anymore."

Though rain isn't as bad as, say, the ocean.

"You do realize it wasn't real? Your body was quite safe the whole time. I made sure of it myself."

Perhaps she doesn't understand the psychological fear at play here.

"But that... that doesn't matter! I felt my lungs fill with water. And I couldn't do anything. I was stuck and I was drowning... and I couldn't get away!"

She pinches herself.

"I still feel like flesh and blood. And this flesh and blood died. Dead died."

"All flesh and blood dies." She tilts her head, as if she doesn't entirely get it or perhaps can't get it.

"You're lucky we could bring you back here. Not everyone has that chance."

"But that's not the point! The point is you apparently look after us and I still died. And I now remember exactly what that felt like and it was horrible."

"We look after your body. If we had to babysit your mind, we would never do anything else."

Her tone is still even, though you could perhaps not call it gentle anymore. There's a coldness to it, a darkness that bleeds out into a slight distortion around her form. Like a haze, subtle, more noticed in a vague sense of wrongness than anything tangible.

It's like arguing with Jareth. She feels that it's starting to go wrong, but she has to keep going. She's stubborn after all.

"It's not fair!"

If she were standing, she would have stamped her foot as well.

"Nothing is, Sarah." Her tone doesn't change, though it seems to multiply. Subtly, like a swarm of insects chittering in unison, creating depth and dimensions where there shouldn't be.

"The sooner you realize that, the sooner you can move on."
