DAY 365 — Anniversary Festival Mingle

Happy Day 365, Marina Nova!

Hear ye, hear ye! Inmates, prisoners, fellow underwater dwellers! Lend me your ears and hands and actually just bring all of you because we're having a ye olde Renaissance Faire to celebrate a full year in this bubble under the sea!

The dome has of course been decked out appropriately. Flickering torches light the pathways, interspersed with larger bonfires that you can cosy up to with that special someone - or perhaps just a glass of honey mead. Pennant banners hang across the gates and along the buildings, sporting the proud coat of arms of the prison (a lot of purple and octopi, for some reason) and many of the clothing stores offer time-appropriate options for those of you who still knows how to have fun. The kiosk has even been re-imagined into a castle.

Many areas within the dome has activities to partake in and, if you're skilled or lucky or both, prizes to win!

Sector 5 Gamegrounds: What better way to show your bravery than by participating in a series of tests of strength and cunning? Sector 5 provides the inmates with a chance to try such varied sports as varpa, caber tossing, ring toss or the very dignified sport of rövkrok, a type of wrestling that requires skill as well as no sense of shame. Not tough enough for you? There are also friendly foam weapons and armor available for those who want to engage in a chivalrous bout of hand to hand combat, test your archery skills — or maybe convince another prisoner to give you a piggyback ride and go jousting!

Competitors that do well enough and show outstanding bravery may be rewarded with a handful of rehab points, or a personalized pennant — or maybe a kiss from the lord or lady of your choosing!

Less violent activities: Not into skewering your neighbors on spears? Maybe you'd rather relax with a game of knucklebones, pick up sticks or Nine Men's Morris. Boards and instructions are readily available in several areas. If you're more creatively inclined there's also activity tables on offer where you can create your own coat of arms, bind yourself a flower crown or learn the art of illumination.

Food: The food carts in sector 0 are now carrying food fit for the occasion. Whole roasted pigs and poultry, wild rabbit in plum sauce, thick beef stews smelling of rich saffron, roasted vegetables (no potatoes here, no sir!) and cream-stewed cabbage for the vegetarians among us. If you're still hungry there's saffron pancake, ginger and clove cookies or bread pudding with raisins for dessert. There's plenty of mulled wine, honey mead, foaming beer, honeyd applewater and lingonberry juice to wash it down with. Enjoy!

Dance: As is custom, there will be a dance at the beach at the end of the day. Great fires will roar and a band of robots will strike up music suitable for dancing! Dress up in your finest satin and velvet, brush the extrement off your shoes and grab a partner!

Enjoy!

[No, but it can hear you.

A slight laugh to that.]

That does sound much better. Though in general I've really never seen so much meat in one place before.

Not even at a butcher's shop?

Ah. . . well, yes. There's a butcher shop, but the island I'm from is rather contained, and it's really small so there's not much room for raising livestock. We mostly eat seafood, with meat being something more for special occasions.

[Or something like that.]

There's a lot of seafood where I'm from too. It's good though! [He doesn't have to make the food so of course it's good.]

Does the water here have fish? I know we're beneath the ocean, but. . .

I've seen people fish at the beach. [Tyki used to fish at the koi pond, but that's not cool.]

I'll have to do so some time, then.

Did you fish a lot back home?

Not a ton, but I'd like to think I'm decent enough at it.

I guess that's good for you. Probably bad for the fish though. [He smiles a little.]

I'm sure there's plenty. [right. . .]

I think so. I mean, there can always be more. Unless the wardens say there can't always be more. But I've never heard them say that.

The meat is always available in the stores and restaurants, so there's bound to be.

[Unless that's all synthetic. Which only leads to another thought.]

The fact that we eat in a virtual place at all, though, is strange.

Nothing feels that way. I mean, I know you were told it was virtual right away, but when I got here and for most of the time no one could tell at all.

What triggered that information to be revealed, if it's okay to ask?

An accident I think. All these doors that had been locked just opened and anyone who went through one woke up in their body. I wasn't there, but I guess they could see everyone else in pods.

A couple of months maybe. It could have been a little longer. They didn't admit it right away afterward, but then they did. [He's skipping some parts, but he doesn't know everything that happened.]

You never know. You could always ask the Defense Force about it. But isn't it better to just enjoy today while everything is here?

[He really should ask the other members of the Defense Force about numerous things. He's a part of it already, but hasn't really learned about every aspect.

There's just a smile after that. Enjoying, being thankful, and simply living in each moment as it comes is something he's very used to doing.]

Yeah, you're right. It really has been fun so far.

I like these kinds of days the best. They happen sometimes at things like anniversaries. I think we'd all like the place better if this was all they did. [Not that he wants to focus on the other things they do that are less pleasant.] So what haven't you tried yet?

[He lightly hums in thought and glances around to the various food stations.]

I'd try one of everything if I could eat that much. I haven't had any of the desserts yet, though. I'd love learning how to make all of these.

It's a good thing to try even if you don't succeed! [Is it a good thing to try though?]

You must really like baking.

I guess, huh? [amused]

It probably sounds like that. Cooking is one of my favorite things. I did so when I was younger, but I began to enjoy it a lot more once I began working at the café. [Even if it more so was a part of his rehabilitation.]
