DAY 365 — Anniversary Festival Mingle

Happy Day 365, Marina Nova!

Hear ye, hear ye! Inmates, prisoners, fellow underwater dwellers! Lend me your ears and hands and actually just bring all of you because we're having a ye olde Renaissance Faire to celebrate a full year in this bubble under the sea!

The dome has of course been decked out appropriately. Flickering torches light the pathways, interspersed with larger bonfires that you can cosy up to with that special someone - or perhaps just a glass of honey mead. Pennant banners hang across the gates and along the buildings, sporting the proud coat of arms of the prison (a lot of purple and octopi, for some reason) and many of the clothing stores offer time-appropriate options for those of you who still knows how to have fun. The kiosk has even been re-imagined into a castle.

Many areas within the dome has activities to partake in and, if you're skilled or lucky or both, prizes to win!

Sector 5 Gamegrounds: What better way to show your bravery than by participating in a series of tests of strength and cunning? Sector 5 provides the inmates with a chance to try such varied sports as varpa, caber tossing, ring toss or the very dignified sport of rövkrok, a type of wrestling that requires skill as well as no sense of shame. Not tough enough for you? There are also friendly foam weapons and armor available for those who want to engage in a chivalrous bout of hand to hand combat, test your archery skills — or maybe convince another prisoner to give you a piggyback ride and go jousting!

Competitors that do well enough and show outstanding bravery may be rewarded with a handful of rehab points, or a personalized pennant — or maybe a kiss from the lord or lady of your choosing!

Less violent activities: Not into skewering your neighbors on spears? Maybe you'd rather relax with a game of knucklebones, pick up sticks or Nine Men's Morris. Boards and instructions are readily available in several areas. If you're more creatively inclined there's also activity tables on offer where you can create your own coat of arms, bind yourself a flower crown or learn the art of illumination.

Food: The food carts in sector 0 are now carrying food fit for the occasion. Whole roasted pigs and poultry, wild rabbit in plum sauce, thick beef stews smelling of rich saffron, roasted vegetables (no potatoes here, no sir!) and cream-stewed cabbage for the vegetarians among us. If you're still hungry there's saffron pancake, ginger and clove cookies or bread pudding with raisins for dessert. There's plenty of mulled wine, honey mead, foaming beer, honeyd applewater and lingonberry juice to wash it down with. Enjoy!

Dance: As is custom, there will be a dance at the beach at the end of the day. Great fires will roar and a band of robots will strike up music suitable for dancing! Dress up in your finest satin and velvet, brush the extrement off your shoes and grab a partner!

Enjoy!

While I hope that I never have an opportunity to attend a funeral with you, I will ask for a demonstration of tasteful dipping and twirling someday. [Right now, though, he's just going straight for a twirl. Kitty's fancy dress is asking for it.]

[And twirl she does! Okay, the dress is pretty awesome for this particular move.] I guess it wouldn't come up much in a place where people can't die.

I'm sure there will be other solemn occasions where such dancing would be considered in poor taste.

Like when we run out of ice cream and the store seems way too far to go get another one?

Why would you trivialize that suffering?

Hey, I am speaking and acting with the highest reverence for this topic.

You never do that, I'm unconvinced. [He is also not dancing in a way that remotely matches up with the music. Hopefully that isn't a problem.]

[Not for her. She will follow him and not the beat.] Never? I'm sure there was at least one time. Maybe on accident?

[Love his dancing for its enthusiasm, not its quality.]

It must have been before my time because I have no memory of it. [He appreciates your irreverence, Kitty. Never stop.]

I have to keep these things quiet. I can't go around ruining my reputation.

[He draws a little closer to her unthinkingly. It takes him a beat to remember what happened with the mistletoe, and another for him to reestablish a safer distance. His smile falters, but doesn't disappear entirely.] Your reputation is safe, I'm certain.

[She didn't think anything of the dance positioning until he's readjusting it. Her smile fades with it momentarily.] Um, good. [What were they talking about?] So, did you play any of the games?

[Drat! And things were nice and not awkward there for a couple of minutes! Now he's going to be kicking himself for ruining it and making everything more awkward by virtue of thinking too much.] I considered it, but then I was distracted by eating and making hats out of flowers.

[It'll work itself out with time, right? She wants it to. She's not losing him.] At least you weren't eating hats or flowers.

[It has to! He doesn't plan on being lost.] Or making hats out of food. There are so many ways that could have gone badly wrong.

I don't know. Now I think you'd look good in a macaroni hat. [It's okay if she tells him he'd look good, right?]

You're very protective of your reputation. I worry that this is a sign of insecurity. [He also worries that this dance does not have enough wholly-inappropriate-for-the-music-and-tempo dipping, but he can fix that (hopefully without taking Kitty entirely by surprise).]

[The comeback is right there on the tip of her tongue when suddenly she's being dipped. She manages to control the instincts that tell her to do anything but go with it. She laughs and smiles.] You are ridiculous.

So I have been told. [They're closer when she returns to a fully upright position, and he has, for the moment, forgotten to fret about doing The Wrong Thing.] By you, mostly.
