DAY 365 — Anniversary Festival Mingle

Happy Day 365, Marina Nova!

Hear ye, hear ye! Inmates, prisoners, fellow underwater dwellers! Lend me your ears and hands and actually just bring all of you because we're having a ye olde Renaissance Faire to celebrate a full year in this bubble under the sea!

The dome has of course been decked out appropriately. Flickering torches light the pathways, interspersed with larger bonfires that you can cosy up to with that special someone - or perhaps just a glass of honey mead. Pennant banners hang across the gates and along the buildings, sporting the proud coat of arms of the prison (a lot of purple and octopi, for some reason) and many of the clothing stores offer time-appropriate options for those of you who still knows how to have fun. The kiosk has even been re-imagined into a castle.

Many areas within the dome has activities to partake in and, if you're skilled or lucky or both, prizes to win!

Sector 5 Gamegrounds: What better way to show your bravery than by participating in a series of tests of strength and cunning? Sector 5 provides the inmates with a chance to try such varied sports as varpa, caber tossing, ring toss or the very dignified sport of rövkrok, a type of wrestling that requires skill as well as no sense of shame. Not tough enough for you? There are also friendly foam weapons and armor available for those who want to engage in a chivalrous bout of hand to hand combat, test your archery skills — or maybe convince another prisoner to give you a piggyback ride and go jousting!

Competitors that do well enough and show outstanding bravery may be rewarded with a handful of rehab points, or a personalized pennant — or maybe a kiss from the lord or lady of your choosing!

Less violent activities: Not into skewering your neighbors on spears? Maybe you'd rather relax with a game of knucklebones, pick up sticks or Nine Men's Morris. Boards and instructions are readily available in several areas. If you're more creatively inclined there's also activity tables on offer where you can create your own coat of arms, bind yourself a flower crown or learn the art of illumination.

Food: The food carts in sector 0 are now carrying food fit for the occasion. Whole roasted pigs and poultry, wild rabbit in plum sauce, thick beef stews smelling of rich saffron, roasted vegetables (no potatoes here, no sir!) and cream-stewed cabbage for the vegetarians among us. If you're still hungry there's saffron pancake, ginger and clove cookies or bread pudding with raisins for dessert. There's plenty of mulled wine, honey mead, foaming beer, honeyd applewater and lingonberry juice to wash it down with. Enjoy!

Dance: As is custom, there will be a dance at the beach at the end of the day. Great fires will roar and a band of robots will strike up music suitable for dancing! Dress up in your finest satin and velvet, brush the extrement off your shoes and grab a partner!

Enjoy!

Sarah looks only moderately uncomfortable when she sits back up.

"Limited technology. I think... maybe my planet gets better technology later. Like, when I'm 30. I'm too early for things like lap tops and DVDs. Our computers are big and clunky and nothing like they have here."

She focuses back on her crown; it's easier than looking at him. "Um. I'm Sarah."

"Ton Phanan, nice to meet you." It's a little uncomfortable, talking to someone who won't look at him. He focuses on his flowers, too.

It's the name that gets her to look up again.

"Ton. Ton Phanan who works in the clinic and is married to Chuck?"

"That's me. What a reputation, I know." Really? Is he not know at all around here for his hilarious antics and fabulous pranks?

"She told me about you! That you'd be hard to forget. Or hard to miss."

Sarah fiddles with the crown some more. "I see what she means now."

"That's a good description." He grins because it really is the perfect Chuck solution to describing him, a way to mention that he stands out without describing his cybernetics like that's all there is to him. "You know Chuck?"

"Oh yes! She saved me from the dinosaurs right after I arrived here. Actually, she's been pretty helpful a few times." And there's the fact that they both died in that flood. There was definitely a connection there. But Sarah doesn't like to talk about that.

"She's a very helpful person." He's glad Chuck seems to be such a positive influence on so many people here. She's good at that. "What did she do to the dinosaurs?"

"Nothing. She just helped get me out of the way." Sarah frowned as she thought back on it. "Actually, she helped me out a lot when I first got here. I had no idea what was happening. The dinosaurs were the day after I arrived. And I had slept in a park, and was still wearing my orange jumpsuit. I thought the labyrinth in sector 2 would get me back to the Goblin King's Labyrinth."

[Spoiler Alert: It didn't.]
