DAY 365 — Anniversary Festival Mingle

Happy Day 365, Marina Nova!

Hear ye, hear ye! Inmates, prisoners, fellow underwater dwellers! Lend me your ears and hands and actually just bring all of you because we're having a ye olde Renaissance Faire to celebrate a full year in this bubble under the sea!

The dome has of course been decked out appropriately. Flickering torches light the pathways, interspersed with larger bonfires that you can cosy up to with that special someone - or perhaps just a glass of honey mead. Pennant banners hang across the gates and along the buildings, sporting the proud coat of arms of the prison (a lot of purple and octopi, for some reason) and many of the clothing stores offer time-appropriate options for those of you who still knows how to have fun. The kiosk has even been re-imagined into a castle.

Many areas within the dome has activities to partake in and, if you're skilled or lucky or both, prizes to win!

Sector 5 Gamegrounds: What better way to show your bravery than by participating in a series of tests of strength and cunning? Sector 5 provides the inmates with a chance to try such varied sports as varpa, caber tossing, ring toss or the very dignified sport of rövkrok, a type of wrestling that requires skill as well as no sense of shame. Not tough enough for you? There are also friendly foam weapons and armor available for those who want to engage in a chivalrous bout of hand to hand combat, test your archery skills — or maybe convince another prisoner to give you a piggyback ride and go jousting!

Competitors that do well enough and show outstanding bravery may be rewarded with a handful of rehab points, or a personalized pennant — or maybe a kiss from the lord or lady of your choosing!

Less violent activities: Not into skewering your neighbors on spears? Maybe you'd rather relax with a game of knucklebones, pick up sticks or Nine Men's Morris. Boards and instructions are readily available in several areas. If you're more creatively inclined there's also activity tables on offer where you can create your own coat of arms, bind yourself a flower crown or learn the art of illumination.

Food: The food carts in sector 0 are now carrying food fit for the occasion. Whole roasted pigs and poultry, wild rabbit in plum sauce, thick beef stews smelling of rich saffron, roasted vegetables (no potatoes here, no sir!) and cream-stewed cabbage for the vegetarians among us. If you're still hungry there's saffron pancake, ginger and clove cookies or bread pudding with raisins for dessert. There's plenty of mulled wine, honey mead, foaming beer, honeyd applewater and lingonberry juice to wash it down with. Enjoy!

Dance: As is custom, there will be a dance at the beach at the end of the day. Great fires will roar and a band of robots will strike up music suitable for dancing! Dress up in your finest satin and velvet, brush the extrement off your shoes and grab a partner!

Enjoy!

How do you figure? [No, really, go ahead. Other perspectives are always good.]

You said there was a system failure. A flood. Somebody screwed up there. Look at all this. You really think they're throwing a party because they like us? We're getting distracted from something. Just don't know what. [ Not that he hasn't played into it, getting dressed up and playing stupid games. ] Eventually, one of these is gonna have a way out in it.

Someone screwed up unless they did it on purpose. But I agree. The party isn't just for our benefit. [Something she's believed all along and yet the longer she's here the more she needs to relax and enjoy them when they do come up. Maybe that's just part of the plan.]

Let me know if you find out what else it's for. Right now my best guess is they're gathering up material for blackmail.

Blackmail to do what? Make us work for them? They're taking their time. Some of us have been here close to a year. [No one was here from day 1 anymore otherwise they'd already be at that year according to this event.]

[ Han shrugs at the blackmail. There have been better guesses, but as it is he feels like he's flying blind here. ] Close to a year, and there's still no solid escape plan.

We did change prisons twice. Three times if you count our two day trip. And they don't just throw parties to keep us busy. We have learned things we didn't know.

Yeah? [ He bristles a little at that, if only because this feels very familiar to every other game of Talk About a Thing In Front of Han Without Explaining It he's sat through in the last week. ] Gonna share any of that, or are you old timers waiting for the new kids to start disappearing first?

See how you do walking people through everything almost a year in. [She sighs a little.] Which part? [She did touch on a lot of things, any one of which could keep her busy with explanations.]

I'm not the one that volunteered for the job, but if we're both still here a year from now I'll give a full report to HQ. [ He scans the crowd for a second. It's a lot of people that probably shouldn't be here. ] You could start with how that prison change went.

The job? You think the Defense Force's mission is to explain every detail of the prison's past to everyone who arrives? Seems like we'd have named it something else.

[But whatever, she can still explain it as a human being. Well, not quite human.]

The old prison had a warden named Sentience. At one point Sentience was convinced to arrest the engineers who created it on charges of kidnapping. The engineers were in here with us, but I'm not sure they were ever really prisoners. They managed to install a new warden to supplant Sentience. It's name was Acumen. Sentience was still around but not in power. Eventually, it staged a coup with the help of the inmates to overthrow Acumen. Good for learning a little more about that prison. Bad for actually getting our freedom because once Sentience was back in charge nothing really changed. Then one day we woke up here in a similar, but different prison. We were told Sentience had graduated. Whatever that's supposed to mean. Maybe this whole thing is really just a training exercise for the AI wardens.

[ Not the Defense Force so much as how she kept mentioning things without explanation. It got his back up, just as much as it looks like it's getting hers. Still, he listens quietly, waiting to hear something he can use. Anything. Insight about security protocols, or maybe transfer. The bit about there being engineers is promising, at least. Means there's someone not a droid in charge somewhere.

Still, not a lot. Han shakes his head when she finishes, still frustrated. ]

Training exercises end eventually. Year long one means that either they're gearing up for something a lot bigger than this, or they're perfecting what they've got.

Probably so. Though the wardens here aren't really much like Sentience. If that was their goal they've fallen off track. Then again maybe graduated meant failed without hope of getting better and they started over. I don't know. [You can speculate in different directions for days over all of it.]

Yeah, there's still plenty to figure out. [ A frustrating challenge. Han much prefers to know which direction to shoot and then doing that until something gives. ] At least it's more than I knew before this party.

Already a productive dance. [Not that they're actually dancing.] It's a lot to take in, but if you keep asking questions you'll get a lot of it. If there was an easy, digested answer for everything I'd have already mentioned it.

If any of this was easy we'd all be gone, right? [ Bad joke, and he shakes his head at himself. ] I should probably save some questions for the next party.

[She smiles softly.] Exactly that. [It does always set her a little on edge when new arrivals act like they would have done it all so much better and been out by now when it's definitely not for lack of trying. But she gets it too. It's just been a long time since she was new. Sometimes she needs a minute to relax and take it in stride. She can also be pretty good into reading things in that aren't even being said because she feels like they should have accomplished their goals a long time ago and she's always her own worst critic.]

Without questions what would you even do with yourself?

[ Oh, Han is definitely thinking it. In general he's always operating under the assumption he could've done it better and faster, and this place makes the agitation over a lack of progress that much more pronounced. Thankfully he's learned it's better to keep that to himself so he can keep getting information and help. ]

Oh, I bet I could find something. Was thinking of starting in on redundant life support once this dies down.

[ He shrugs. At this point, an interesting idea is about as far as he's gotten. ] Doubt they'd let me have a Quadex power core, but if I keep looking around I bet I can find something that'd work.

They might with enough rehabilitation points. There are other means of generating power. None are particularly efficient here, but that can be worked out.

I'm not too interested in going through them for it, but if I can figure out a fuel source building an engine won't be the hardest part. [ He's jury-rigged enough on the Falcon that he's pretty confident he won't blow himself up in the process. ]

[It's not where she'd start, but using some sort of water-based power system could be an option if other things run dry.] I'd definitely hit up the other options first. But it's a good idea. [She approves. Not that you needed her approval.]
