DAY 365 — Anniversary Festival Mingle

Happy Day 365, Marina Nova!

Hear ye, hear ye! Inmates, prisoners, fellow underwater dwellers! Lend me your ears and hands and actually just bring all of you because we're having a ye olde Renaissance Faire to celebrate a full year in this bubble under the sea!

The dome has of course been decked out appropriately. Flickering torches light the pathways, interspersed with larger bonfires that you can cosy up to with that special someone - or perhaps just a glass of honey mead. Pennant banners hang across the gates and along the buildings, sporting the proud coat of arms of the prison (a lot of purple and octopi, for some reason) and many of the clothing stores offer time-appropriate options for those of you who still knows how to have fun. The kiosk has even been re-imagined into a castle.

Many areas within the dome has activities to partake in and, if you're skilled or lucky or both, prizes to win!

Sector 5 Gamegrounds: What better way to show your bravery than by participating in a series of tests of strength and cunning? Sector 5 provides the inmates with a chance to try such varied sports as varpa, caber tossing, ring toss or the very dignified sport of rövkrok, a type of wrestling that requires skill as well as no sense of shame. Not tough enough for you? There are also friendly foam weapons and armor available for those who want to engage in a chivalrous bout of hand to hand combat, test your archery skills — or maybe convince another prisoner to give you a piggyback ride and go jousting!

Competitors that do well enough and show outstanding bravery may be rewarded with a handful of rehab points, or a personalized pennant — or maybe a kiss from the lord or lady of your choosing!

Less violent activities: Not into skewering your neighbors on spears? Maybe you'd rather relax with a game of knucklebones, pick up sticks or Nine Men's Morris. Boards and instructions are readily available in several areas. If you're more creatively inclined there's also activity tables on offer where you can create your own coat of arms, bind yourself a flower crown or learn the art of illumination.

Food: The food carts in sector 0 are now carrying food fit for the occasion. Whole roasted pigs and poultry, wild rabbit in plum sauce, thick beef stews smelling of rich saffron, roasted vegetables (no potatoes here, no sir!) and cream-stewed cabbage for the vegetarians among us. If you're still hungry there's saffron pancake, ginger and clove cookies or bread pudding with raisins for dessert. There's plenty of mulled wine, honey mead, foaming beer, honeyd applewater and lingonberry juice to wash it down with. Enjoy!

Dance: As is custom, there will be a dance at the beach at the end of the day. Great fires will roar and a band of robots will strike up music suitable for dancing! Dress up in your finest satin and velvet, brush the extrement off your shoes and grab a partner!

Enjoy!

[She regards him quietly for a moment, some of the sharpness in her features relaxing at the apology and explanation. She's protective of her friends, but the words hit a little too close to home for her too as a mutant. Maybe not fair to heap all that upon him though.]

He's human. He was wounded in battle. Those are for life support. [Maybe not traditional life support, but it's hard to live without half your face.] He's also a doctor, a pilot, a member of the Defense Force, and my friend.

Even if he does have terrible taste in clothes.

I'm sorry for insulting your friend. [Constant low-key anxiety about being surrounded by AIs is not helping him keep the defensiveness out of his voice, but he isn't here to make enemies.] If I saw him where I'm from I would expect him to murder everyone here, but this is different—I understand. I believe you.

You already apologized. I was just...answering your question. [Maybe a little too bluntly. She didn't mean to make him feel like he had to keep apologizing. She gets it. He's new and he has his own issues from home.]

Who were they? The murderous ones. [Best dance conversation?]

Sorry, I'm... aggressively repentant today, apparently. [That was another apology, wasn't it? He runs a nervous hand through his hair and shakes his head.]

It's not worth talking about at a party. [Worst, thanks.] I actually came over to see if you'd dance with me.

You really know how to set the mood. [But she doesn't seem that condemning as she says it and offers a hand to him. That's a yes.]

I'm a singularly talented individual. [He takes her hand, surprised that she isn't telling him to take off.] Thank you.

[She does love dancing.] So, how are you doing? [Because he seemed nervous even before the faux pas.]

[Good, because he remembers a time when he loved it, too. He places his other hand on her side and takes a few slow steps.] Making do, I suppose. For a prison, the accommodations are nice.

[She follows along easily, like someone who has had a decent amount of experience.] Which sector are you living in?

Four. Not the kind of architecture I was expecting from an underwater prison, but I like it. [Her obvious dance experience catches him by surprise and makes him smile.] You know what you're doing.

I live there too, stalker. [She smiles though.]

I was pretty into dance when I was younger. [Not that she's old now.]

You found me out. [He's not a stalker, it's okay.]

Do you have any ballroom dances in your repertoire? I used to do a mean Gemonese quickstep.

I don't know the Gemonese quickstep, but I've got some ballroom down. Bring it.

[This is not remotely the right kind of music, but he finds a step that fits the tempo. Nothing fancy.] What kind of dancing were you into?

I studied a little bit of ballroom and ballet as a kid, but I was really into modern and jazz dancing. Most of which is more for performing than dancing with someone, so there's that.

Sounds like you were more than pretty into dance... or you're really serious about your hobbies.

I used to practices for hours just about every day. I figured I'd do it professionally for awhile.

The world had other plans, hm? [The more of her story he pieces together, the more familiar it sounds.] I was going to go into biogenetics after doing my time with the Fleet. That didn't pan out, either.

Worlds usually do.

Biogenetics, huh? Not really my favorite. [Mostly because of the human (and mutant) experimenting that went on with Apocalypse's geneticists. But also a little bit because of Reid's Maeve, the geneticist.]

That guy already thinks I'm an idiot, but thanks for trying to set me up with friends. [Even if that sounded slightly sarcastic, he does appreciate the thought. Gods know he needs the help.]

I asked for an explanation of virtual reality in case it wasn't exactly what it sounded like. [The problem here, clearly, is that Felix thinks that Felix is an idiot.] None of my follow-up was brilliant, either.
