DAY 365 — Anniversary Festival Mingle

Happy Day 365, Marina Nova!

Hear ye, hear ye! Inmates, prisoners, fellow underwater dwellers! Lend me your ears and hands and actually just bring all of you because we're having a ye olde Renaissance Faire to celebrate a full year in this bubble under the sea!

The dome has of course been decked out appropriately. Flickering torches light the pathways, interspersed with larger bonfires that you can cosy up to with that special someone - or perhaps just a glass of honey mead. Pennant banners hang across the gates and along the buildings, sporting the proud coat of arms of the prison (a lot of purple and octopi, for some reason) and many of the clothing stores offer time-appropriate options for those of you who still knows how to have fun. The kiosk has even been re-imagined into a castle.

Many areas within the dome has activities to partake in and, if you're skilled or lucky or both, prizes to win!

Sector 5 Gamegrounds: What better way to show your bravery than by participating in a series of tests of strength and cunning? Sector 5 provides the inmates with a chance to try such varied sports as varpa, caber tossing, ring toss or the very dignified sport of rövkrok, a type of wrestling that requires skill as well as no sense of shame. Not tough enough for you? There are also friendly foam weapons and armor available for those who want to engage in a chivalrous bout of hand to hand combat, test your archery skills — or maybe convince another prisoner to give you a piggyback ride and go jousting!

Competitors that do well enough and show outstanding bravery may be rewarded with a handful of rehab points, or a personalized pennant — or maybe a kiss from the lord or lady of your choosing!

Less violent activities: Not into skewering your neighbors on spears? Maybe you'd rather relax with a game of knucklebones, pick up sticks or Nine Men's Morris. Boards and instructions are readily available in several areas. If you're more creatively inclined there's also activity tables on offer where you can create your own coat of arms, bind yourself a flower crown or learn the art of illumination.

Food: The food carts in sector 0 are now carrying food fit for the occasion. Whole roasted pigs and poultry, wild rabbit in plum sauce, thick beef stews smelling of rich saffron, roasted vegetables (no potatoes here, no sir!) and cream-stewed cabbage for the vegetarians among us. If you're still hungry there's saffron pancake, ginger and clove cookies or bread pudding with raisins for dessert. There's plenty of mulled wine, honey mead, foaming beer, honeyd applewater and lingonberry juice to wash it down with. Enjoy!

Dance: As is custom, there will be a dance at the beach at the end of the day. Great fires will roar and a band of robots will strike up music suitable for dancing! Dress up in your finest satin and velvet, brush the extrement off your shoes and grab a partner!

[It's not what he was expecting. He's been in a playful, flirtatious mood all day, but this cuts right through it. His eyes flick up to her face and he drops her hand, though not without giving it a little squeeze first, as if for comfort.]

Okay. [He glances around and nods up the beach away from the fires and the music and the dancing.] Shall we?

[Perhaps if it's darker he won't feel quite so exposed.]

[She doesn't mean to ruin any of that. And she wants to dance with him. She's always liked that, but...

She nods and walks away from the others. It's quieter at least, though going off in private may defeat some of the purpose of hesitating at all.

She starts talking without actually looking at him. That would make it too hard.]

At the last dance I saw Reid and Leia together. He was looking at her in a way I'd only ever seen him look at me before. It made it hard to... I left abruptly. And it made me think which is basically always dangerous. Then he and I were getting closer and I found myself apologizing for the times I danced with you at these things because I knew it made him jealous. I didn't do it because of that, but I...didn't stop doing it because of it either.

[The longer she talks, the more of a sinking feeling he gets inside. It feels ridiculously like she's breaking up with him (as if they were together in the first place!), and it doesn't help that the reason is someone else's jealousy, which immediately causes his polyamorous convictions to flare up. It doesn't help, either, that he's still a bit sore with Reid after the body swap and Reid's inflexible stance on so many things and the whole dairy poisoning thing.

Because it's Kitty, and he cares about her, and especially because she says she felt the same way about seeing Reid with Leia, he does his best to swallow all that down and act like a grown-up, but some of it still shows in his face.]

Well, that's disappointing. I always look forward to dancing with you at these things!

[She wouldn't want him blaming Reid. When he accepted the apology he was completely graceful about it. He never acted like she'd done anything wrong, but she wasn't sure how much of that was him meeting her half way and how much of it was really how he felt.

Things are so much better now, but they still feel so impossibly fragile.]

I always have too. I'm sorry. [She dips her head, feeling bad about this part of it instead of good that maybe she's doing something positive for a relationship she might get back. She used to just trusting her gut, so she doesn't like feeling like it isn't on point here. But her gut also led her to Tyki, so brains are better.]

[Unfortunately, though, blaming Reid is exactly what he'll do. There's always been a certain amount of friction between them anyway, and recent events have only increased it.

He purses his lips, trying to master his emotions, because he knows that what he's feeling here is little more or less than the jealousy he's deriding Reid for, but that doesn't make it any easier. The sight of Kitty dipping her head like that, though, unable to meet his eyes, reminds him that this is just as hard for her, and he bites his lip. Whatever he feels, Kitty's one of his best friends here - perhaps the best - and he has to work with her too. He doesn't want to ruin things between them.

And he always wanted her to get back with Reid, didn't he? Didn't he?]

All right. [At last, with a small sigh and a tiny, rueful smile.] I'll just... I guess I'll just keep away, then.

[She's not sure when or if conditions will change for that, but she hopes they will. Talking is fine. At this point I don't know if he even gets jealous over things I do. [Is it strange if she wants him to? She doesn't exactly. She just wants to know he still has those feelings for her the ones with the unfortunate jealous byproducts.]

I just don't want to do something that will push him away when I feel like we're getting closer. [It's all still a little fragile.]

[His mouth twists wryly when she admits she doesn't even know if Reid would get jealous over seeing them dancing, but he's trying to be good because, even if he doesn't really understand all the tiptoe-ing around, he does want Kitty and Reid to get back together, doesn't he? He always has! It's only that day of being married that's changed things, opened his eyes to feelings he never really acknowledged before but which are hard to shove back in the box once they've been out.]

Okay. [With a gentle squeeze of her hand, still holding his. They probably ought to watch that, too, in case Reid is looking their way, but frankly Jack's going to take whatever he can get right now.] I'm glad things are going better with him. I don't want to get in the way of that.

I am too. [It's exciting and it makes her happy, but also...] It still feels so fragile, you know? Like any wrong word or thing and I'm just going to lose him again. [It does feel stronger each day and her confidence with it is returning, but she hasn't really talked about this part of it with anyone. And as complicated as things can be with her and Jack they never feel complicated. Whereas she definitely can't talk to Pavel about it anymore. This is why she needs more female friends, isn't it?]

[She definitely needs more female friends. They might actually understand the fragility of what she's going through. Jack really doesn't. He's not the sort of person who deals with subtleties. He hits things full in the face and if they don't work out, then so be it.

That...would be nice. Not the dying part, but... [She doesn't really see it that way though. He was the one who decided to end it. She was the one who was stubborn wanting to make it work. As hopeful as she is that part is still painful. Feeling like she could be discarded if things get hard is exactly the part that feels fragile to her now. Things always get hard. That's what life is.] Someone who wants to fight for me.

[If this had been six months ago, before blue bands and Ianto and monogamy, he could well have been fighting for them both. The idea that he has to choose one or the other is still a relatively new one - or at least a new one for him to have accepted - and he can't help slipping now and then.

He takes a breath and gives her a rueful smile, finally and rather deliberately letting her hand drop.]

Well, let's hope that's how it goes! I... should probably go. I'll see you around, okay?

[He's not being very convincing, he knows, but somehow, conman or no conman, he's unable to pretend entirely that he's okay with this, even for her sake. He hopes he's also being firm enough that she won't make a big thing about it.]

Of course you will. [There's no scenario where she's just going to be okay with not having him in her life at this point. Jack is important to her even if Reid is the one she's fighting for.

And maybe if she were a less monogamous person or had been raised in a culture where she was more exposed to other ways of doing these things or maybe if she just had less trauma over loss and abandonment and didn't need as tight of a bond...

But that's not how it was.]
