DAY 365 — Anniversary Festival Mingle

Happy Day 365, Marina Nova!

Hear ye, hear ye! Inmates, prisoners, fellow underwater dwellers! Lend me your ears and hands and actually just bring all of you because we're having a ye olde Renaissance Faire to celebrate a full year in this bubble under the sea!

The dome has of course been decked out appropriately. Flickering torches light the pathways, interspersed with larger bonfires that you can cosy up to with that special someone - or perhaps just a glass of honey mead. Pennant banners hang across the gates and along the buildings, sporting the proud coat of arms of the prison (a lot of purple and octopi, for some reason) and many of the clothing stores offer time-appropriate options for those of you who still knows how to have fun. The kiosk has even been re-imagined into a castle.

Many areas within the dome has activities to partake in and, if you're skilled or lucky or both, prizes to win!

Sector 5 Gamegrounds: What better way to show your bravery than by participating in a series of tests of strength and cunning? Sector 5 provides the inmates with a chance to try such varied sports as varpa, caber tossing, ring toss or the very dignified sport of rövkrok, a type of wrestling that requires skill as well as no sense of shame. Not tough enough for you? There are also friendly foam weapons and armor available for those who want to engage in a chivalrous bout of hand to hand combat, test your archery skills — or maybe convince another prisoner to give you a piggyback ride and go jousting!

Competitors that do well enough and show outstanding bravery may be rewarded with a handful of rehab points, or a personalized pennant — or maybe a kiss from the lord or lady of your choosing!

Less violent activities: Not into skewering your neighbors on spears? Maybe you'd rather relax with a game of knucklebones, pick up sticks or Nine Men's Morris. Boards and instructions are readily available in several areas. If you're more creatively inclined there's also activity tables on offer where you can create your own coat of arms, bind yourself a flower crown or learn the art of illumination.

Food: The food carts in sector 0 are now carrying food fit for the occasion. Whole roasted pigs and poultry, wild rabbit in plum sauce, thick beef stews smelling of rich saffron, roasted vegetables (no potatoes here, no sir!) and cream-stewed cabbage for the vegetarians among us. If you're still hungry there's saffron pancake, ginger and clove cookies or bread pudding with raisins for dessert. There's plenty of mulled wine, honey mead, foaming beer, honeyd applewater and lingonberry juice to wash it down with. Enjoy!

Dance: As is custom, there will be a dance at the beach at the end of the day. Great fires will roar and a band of robots will strike up music suitable for dancing! Dress up in your finest satin and velvet, brush the extrement off your shoes and grab a partner!

Enjoy!

Jack looks up at him over the chicken leg he's just torn a large chunk out of and grins. "Might as well have some fun when they allow it!" he shrugs, and gestures to the space beside him on the bench. "Zero, isn't it?" He left the Defence Force interview to Kitty, but he's made sure he knew who the young man is by sight. "Come and join me for lunch?"

"I suppose so. . . " He hardly has to consider those words. It's only been two days since he's arrived, but he's learned plenty already about the nature of this place. Regardless, though.

It takes a moment for him to realize he's actually seen Jack before, as well. "Right." Although he's not the most social, he knows he probably should get to know his new teammates.

"Yeah, sure." Not that he hasn't eaten already.

"Dig in," Jack says with a generous gesture at the miniature feast laid out before him on the table. And then cocks his head, remembering what Zero is, as well as who. "At least, do you eat?"

It's fairly impressive even compared to Yuuki's piled up plates in any sort of occasion.

It isn't until he takes a seat does he initially blink with the question. "I'm starting to wonder just how many know." Not that it bothers him very much.

"Yeah. I do. I rather like it as well." Apart from sleeping, eating happens to be one of his favorite things.

He absorbs that reaction and comments, with a faint twitch of his lips, "I'm co-head of the Defence Force, and you're on my team. What you are and what you can do with it is the kind of thing I need to know!"

He takes a drink of mead, watching Zero over the top of his beaker. "Is it something you'd rather keep quiet, generally? I haven't talked to anyone else about you yet, other than Kitty."

"Fair enough. If you really want to know, then- I possess speed and strength much beyond that of a normal human. All of my senses are much sharper as well. I also heal much faster." A brief pause. He really isn't used to talking about himself (sometimes it feels like he's bragging). "I'm trained and skilled in hand to hand combat as well as weapons, but my one of choice are guns."

Is that enough?

"At home it is, yes. The existence of vampires is kept a secret from the general human population. They aren't really aware of us hunters, either. I don't have any issue with people here knowing about it. It's just different from what I'm used to."

Jack eats and listens, absorbing the information, some of which he already knew but it's always good to get it from the subject himself.

"People are generally a lot more open and less judgemental here," he nods, with a wry smile. "Also generally a lot more powered-up! I'm rather jealous! The only one of those powers I have is healing quickly - well, and not being able to stay dead, which is kind of moot now that that's the same for everyone."

He cocks his head. "Do you have a gun? I managed to request mine from home, but it cost a lot of rehabilitation points."

"Good to know, then." Although he'd be the first to judge even himself. He's become a lot more open towards the differences of others, though, just within the past couple of years. He has to wonder just what other types of individuals are here.

"Yeah, I do. Apparently the last time I was here i was able to earn it back. My roommate from that time was able to keep some of my belongings even after I vanished. Most of it was clothing, so I was surprised that he had it as well."

"That's great! There's a definite shortage of real weapons around here! Perhaps we could get together on the shooting range sometime. I probably haven't got as much practice in as I ought to, lately - though to be fair things have been very quiet for quite a while now."

And, obviously, it would be good to see his newest team member in action, so he knows what he's got to work with.

". . .Will I even be allowed ammunition?" Because all he seemed to find was foam. Which was a pain. Bloody Rose has a full magazine; he doesn't want to use it all during target practice if it's all he'll have.

"That's good to hear, though." Although he also has to wonder if it's the calm before the storm.

(Reply to this) (Parent) (Thread)

Jack makes a face. "Yeah, unfortunately, real ammunition is something else you have to spend rehabilitation points on. Might have to save up a bit first! I was lucky and won a sort of lottery to get my gun, so I've had a decent amount of points to spend on bullets, but you might have to wait a bit.

"But yeah, it's been quiet. Mostly, it depends on who arrives in the dome. Of the two major threats we've had since I've been here, we managed to re-soul Spike, and Tyki 'got lost in the dimensional stabiliser' which solved the problem for us." There's a darkness behind his eyes as he mentions Tyki - Tyki tortured and murdered his boyfriend and left him a severed arm on his doorstep, and that's not the sort of thing you forgive and forget. "That doesn't mean he's necessarily gone for good, though. Anyone can come back, after all."

"I'll keep that in mind, then. I tried out the archery station today and even that was only frustrating."

"I had heard about the soul thing from Sam earlier. The aspect of it isn't seen at all in the vampires I'm used to at home."

It isn't all that difficult for him to notice the shift in expression, subtle as it may be. Of course that kind of act isn't excusable. He wouldn't tolerate it either, most especially if it were Yuuki.

"Yeah. I'm an example of that, too." He pauses. "I already did ask Kitty about this, but do you know of anyone else who returned without any memories of their previous stay?"

(Reply to this) (Parent) (Thread)

"The soul thing seems to be fairly unique to the vampires from Spike's reality," Jack nods. "We've got - or have had - quite a variety here over the months and I don't think I've heard of any others not having souls." A quick grin. "Which is good, really, because we'd really be in a fix if you were all as much trouble as he was!"

And yeah, not getting into Tyki's unique problems. He latches onto Zero's slight change of subject instead.

"There have been quite a few who seem to have returned without their memories, yeah. None that I'm particularly close to, but for example there's a friend of mine, the Doctor, who's turned up from a number of different points along his timeline while I've been here, and never seems to remember being here before. Hard to say if each one is the same man or one from a slightly different universe."

"Huh. . ." Yeah, definitely unique. "I suppose the differences are plenty great. It's not simply black or white when it comes to the vampires in my world. Many just want to live quietly and with no interest or drive to cause trouble. That's not to say that none of the opposite exist. Us hunters wouldn't be needed if all were that peaceful."

He just frowns a little to that. "I see." It's not the most helpful or promising, but there isn't much to do about it in the end.

"Not a damn thing, I'm afraid," Jack agrees sympathetically, and cocks his head with interest. "Are vampires 'out' in your world? I know there are some places where they're actually accepted as a part of society, but in others they're a part of the underworld, hanging out in the sewers and so on."

"The sewers. . ." He almost makes a face to that, but instead it's in the way he says the word. How weird, right alongside the idea of using garlic or silver to repel them.

"In a way, yes, but also no. The government is aware of them, but does not officially recognize their existence. There is no punishment for killing them. However, a majority of the human population are completely unaware of them. Vampires live among humans without them being known what they are, but also some prefer to keep to their own. Not all locations have a heavy population of vampires."

The way Zero says 'sewers' tells Jack pretty much all he needs to know, and he smiles wryly. He's hung out in worse places than sewers, himself, on occasion, but it's not somewhere he would generally choose to live either.

What he's most interested in, actually, is the way Zero talks about the vampires from his world - not as 'we' but 'they'.

"You identify as a hunter, rather than a vampire, yourself?" he asks, curious.

"Hunters are born into a specific bloodline, and not entirely human, themselves. While I accept my being a vampire, I'm first and foremost a hunter. It's just as my parents were, and my Master who trained me since I was very young. I work with the Hunters' Association just as they did." A beat. "However, I'm the only one who has ever been in this kind of situation as both."

Ah, right. "So you were a hunter before you were a vampire," he nods, and grins faintly because really, that ought to have been obvious. "I guess I've just got used to vampires who've been vampires for so long that who they were before is just a distant memory!" A curious tilt of his head. "How long has it been for you?"

"Right." From anyone whom he's only just met here in Marina, it could confuse anyone. "That makes sense. The majority of vampires where I'm from were born as such." His latter question doesn't have him pausing, because it isn't as if the story is still fresh and an open wound, however it also isn't something he goes around telling. "Five years ago. I was thirteen."

"Wow, that sounds harsh." A faint, self-deprecating grin. "I was in my thirties when I had my life turned upside down, and that was hard enough. I can't imagine having to go through something like that in your early teens!"

How harsh. Although it doesn't seem to faze him. "It is what it is. I had to grow up fast as it was. It obviously wasn't easy, but I don't focus on the past anymore.

What were your circumstances. . .?"

It doesn't seem to faze him, and Jack absorbs that too, before chuckling at the question. "Well, I'm not a vampire, but I got turned immortal so I guess there are some similarities. A different kind of immortal, though. I can still die - I died that first time - but I come back, every time." He shrugs. "Not that even that's unique any more, not here, but it does mean I've lived over a century and a half so I've managed to accumulate a fair bit of experience, at least!"

Interesting. The lifespan part somewhat reminds him of how some hunters can live longer due to having more vampire DNA in their system than usual, but obviously this is quite different.

A bit wryly, then. "So that's why you commented on accuracy of this festival thing, huh?"

"Kind of. That experience actually comes from earlier in my life when I was a time-traveller, which I guess is the other kind of knowledge I can bring to any party. I was born in the fifty-first century and had a job which required me to travel back to a lot of different time periods, so - yeah." He glances about, and grins. "I spent some time in the Renaissance. It really wasn't a lot like this!"
