DAY 365 — Anniversary Festival Mingle

Happy Day 365, Marina Nova!

Hear ye, hear ye! Inmates, prisoners, fellow underwater dwellers! Lend me your ears and hands and actually just bring all of you because we're having a ye olde Renaissance Faire to celebrate a full year in this bubble under the sea!

The dome has of course been decked out appropriately. Flickering torches light the pathways, interspersed with larger bonfires that you can cosy up to with that special someone - or perhaps just a glass of honey mead. Pennant banners hang across the gates and along the buildings, sporting the proud coat of arms of the prison (a lot of purple and octopi, for some reason) and many of the clothing stores offer time-appropriate options for those of you who still knows how to have fun. The kiosk has even been re-imagined into a castle.

Many areas within the dome has activities to partake in and, if you're skilled or lucky or both, prizes to win!

Sector 5 Gamegrounds: What better way to show your bravery than by participating in a series of tests of strength and cunning? Sector 5 provides the inmates with a chance to try such varied sports as varpa, caber tossing, ring toss or the very dignified sport of rövkrok, a type of wrestling that requires skill as well as no sense of shame. Not tough enough for you? There are also friendly foam weapons and armor available for those who want to engage in a chivalrous bout of hand to hand combat, test your archery skills — or maybe convince another prisoner to give you a piggyback ride and go jousting!

Competitors that do well enough and show outstanding bravery may be rewarded with a handful of rehab points, or a personalized pennant — or maybe a kiss from the lord or lady of your choosing!

Less violent activities: Not into skewering your neighbors on spears? Maybe you'd rather relax with a game of knucklebones, pick up sticks or Nine Men's Morris. Boards and instructions are readily available in several areas. If you're more creatively inclined there's also activity tables on offer where you can create your own coat of arms, bind yourself a flower crown or learn the art of illumination.

Food: The food carts in sector 0 are now carrying food fit for the occasion. Whole roasted pigs and poultry, wild rabbit in plum sauce, thick beef stews smelling of rich saffron, roasted vegetables (no potatoes here, no sir!) and cream-stewed cabbage for the vegetarians among us. If you're still hungry there's saffron pancake, ginger and clove cookies or bread pudding with raisins for dessert. There's plenty of mulled wine, honey mead, foaming beer, honeyd applewater and lingonberry juice to wash it down with. Enjoy!

Dance: As is custom, there will be a dance at the beach at the end of the day. Great fires will roar and a band of robots will strike up music suitable for dancing! Dress up in your finest satin and velvet, brush the extrement off your shoes and grab a partner!

Enjoy!

[ Oh hey, bushes guy. ] Does it matter?

[ She's handling it like she's used one all her life, even if it's...well....not the most imposing of weapons. ]

[He looks over the sword choices carefully, though they're all fairly similar.]

I suppose not.

[He finally chooses his weapon and stands across from her with a smile.]

Ready?

[ Haruka grins back. ] En garde.

[ She doesn't take the first attack, though. She'd rather get a feel for what the opponent can do before striking back. ]

[It's a different style than Link is used to, but he figures it out quickly enough. And it's easy to throw in some of the moves he's regularly used to. Because let's face it, Link is a Hero.]

Interesting... what do you call this style?

Does it really need a name?

[ Beyond "fencing"? Since, frankly, she's never put much store by the usefulness of labels. ]

[He successfully parries and then shrugs]

No. It's different than anything the Hero's Shade taught me is all.

[ Haruka nods. ] About time, then.

[ And suddenly, her sword is moving twice as fast. Right at Link. ]

Look! A new icon appears!

[Oh boy. Link rolls out of the way. He hasn't quite figured out the rules of fencing yet. He's still treating this like an actual sword fight. As he pops up though, he comes at her with a backslice.]

[ ....huh. She'll try to tangle their hilts as she blocks. ] You don't swordfight for sport.

[ Just a hunch. ]

[A shake of his head.]

No... Training or fighting.

[Hilts tangled effectively. He didn't see it coming. She's talking too much. Bokoblins don't do much other than screech and grunt.]

Rough life. [ She'll be trying to disarm him now. Who knows whether this works with this caliber of, ah, weapon - but she'll definitely put enough force behind it to try. ]

[Link doesn't bother to answer. He's too focused on trying to get out of this predicament, possibly disarm her. Thank the goddesses Midna isn't here to offer some sarcastic advice. Just a moment...]

[If it were an actual fight, he'd have another weapon that he could at least use to attack with. As it is, he throws a foot out in attempts to trip her. Because that's sportsmanlike...]

[ Nice try. It doesn't work, but it does convince Haruka that disarming him is going to be more trouble than it's worth, so she adjusts her stance and switches to trying to land a touch as she disentangles their "blades" instead.

No hard feelings, either. If this were an actual fight, she would have socked him the gut by now, probably. ]

Not with foam.

[He's ready this time. Link parries and thrusts back.]

But in general. I can only practice against so many trees before it's useless.

Today should come in handy then.

[ Parry. Sidestep. Haruka is starting to break from the formal rules of fencing now herself. No more handicaps. ]

[That's okay. Link hadn't been following the formal rules in the first place.]

What about after today? Wouldn't mind having a partner to train with.
