DAY 365 — Anniversary Festival Mingle

Happy Day 365, Marina Nova!

Hear ye, hear ye! Inmates, prisoners, fellow underwater dwellers! Lend me your ears and hands and actually just bring all of you because we're having a ye olde Renaissance Faire to celebrate a full year in this bubble under the sea!

The dome has of course been decked out appropriately. Flickering torches light the pathways, interspersed with larger bonfires that you can cosy up to with that special someone - or perhaps just a glass of honey mead. Pennant banners hang across the gates and along the buildings, sporting the proud coat of arms of the prison (a lot of purple and octopi, for some reason) and many of the clothing stores offer time-appropriate options for those of you who still knows how to have fun. The kiosk has even been re-imagined into a castle.

Many areas within the dome has activities to partake in and, if you're skilled or lucky or both, prizes to win!

Sector 5 Gamegrounds: What better way to show your bravery than by participating in a series of tests of strength and cunning? Sector 5 provides the inmates with a chance to try such varied sports as varpa, caber tossing, ring toss or the very dignified sport of rövkrok, a type of wrestling that requires skill as well as no sense of shame. Not tough enough for you? There are also friendly foam weapons and armor available for those who want to engage in a chivalrous bout of hand to hand combat, test your archery skills — or maybe convince another prisoner to give you a piggyback ride and go jousting!

Competitors that do well enough and show outstanding bravery may be rewarded with a handful of rehab points, or a personalized pennant — or maybe a kiss from the lord or lady of your choosing!

Less violent activities: Not into skewering your neighbors on spears? Maybe you'd rather relax with a game of knucklebones, pick up sticks or Nine Men's Morris. Boards and instructions are readily available in several areas. If you're more creatively inclined there's also activity tables on offer where you can create your own coat of arms, bind yourself a flower crown or learn the art of illumination.

Food: The food carts in sector 0 are now carrying food fit for the occasion. Whole roasted pigs and poultry, wild rabbit in plum sauce, thick beef stews smelling of rich saffron, roasted vegetables (no potatoes here, no sir!) and cream-stewed cabbage for the vegetarians among us. If you're still hungry there's saffron pancake, ginger and clove cookies or bread pudding with raisins for dessert. There's plenty of mulled wine, honey mead, foaming beer, honeyd applewater and lingonberry juice to wash it down with. Enjoy!

Dance: As is custom, there will be a dance at the beach at the end of the day. Great fires will roar and a band of robots will strike up music suitable for dancing! Dress up in your finest satin and velvet, brush the extrement off your shoes and grab a partner!

Enjoy!

Jack has of course dressed up wholeheartedly for the occasion and can be found almost anywhere in the dome at some point in the day, alternating between commenting on lack of historical accuracy ("Hey, I've been to the Renaissance!") and plunging into all the most fun parts of it, including eating, drinking, fencing, and of course spending quite a lot of time both watching and indulging in umpteen battles of rövkrok. (What? You didn't see that coming? How could Jack Harkness resist a sport that translates as 'ass-hook'?!?)

And of course once the evening comes, he can be found at the dance, working his way across the dance floor as well as spending some quality romantic time with Ianto.

Ianto still hasn't quite adjusted to the color scheme of Jack's outfit by evening but he will admit it somehow looks good on him. He's stuck with his own approach to dressing for the occasion which is mostly for Jack's benefit. Frankly he thinks it's a brilliant solution.

It's been a long day but he's always up for dancing, even when his dance partner is wearing a cape. "So, how did this even compare to history in terms of accuracy?"

Of course it looks good on him. There's nothing that doesn't look good on him (and nothing looks good on him too)!

He's still wryly amused by Ianto's answer to dressing up, even if he's still a little disappointed not to have managed to get him into a pair of tights. It's not like he doesn't have the legs for it, after all.

He laughs at the question, pulling Ianto in close to twirl them just for the fun of it (and to make his cape swirl out behind him, which is also fun). "Hardly accurate at all, but then these things never are! Way too clean for a start, but I guess that's not something to complain about!"

As far as Ianto is concerned Jack looks good enough in tights for the both of them. And it's always cute to see him this enthusiastic about something. He can act as serious as he wants most of the time, but Ianto still thinks it's adorable how excited he gets to dress up like something from the past.

He lets himself be twirled around, doing his best to avoid getting tangled in the cape. "Certainly not. What sorts of things did you enjoy in the actual Renaissance?"

Hey, Jack always loves dressing up! Why do you think he wears that coat all the time? Because it's dramatic and makes a statement - just as today's flamboyant red costume makes a different kind of statement.

"I liked all the courtliness and chivalry," he says with a grin, after a moment to think about it. "And all the romance and intrigue, and all the balls. Sometimes it was just like one big long party!"

Jack may not have noticed Martha standing on the sidelines as he wrestles. But she is watching and cheering. And after one rather impressive pin...

"GO JACK!!"

He hears the cheering and the particularly loud call of encouragement from Martha, and he strains round to give her a breathless grin. The sight of her, though, in that dress, makes him take a second look, and then release his opponent with a flourish and roll onto his feet to cross over to her and sink gracefully onto one knee before her, taking her hand and kissing it, his eyes twinkling up at her over it.

"My lady. You look ravishing."

Well that's just lovely. Martha brings her free arm to her chest coquettishly. "Good sir. And dost thou wish the lady's reward for such fine feats of strength?"

Zero catches the remark about the accuracy - which personally he has no real idea about; it's never been anything he's learned before - however it's something else he comments on.

Jack looks up at him over the chicken leg he's just torn a large chunk out of and grins. "Might as well have some fun when they allow it!" he shrugs, and gestures to the space beside him on the bench. "Zero, isn't it?" He left the Defence Force interview to Kitty, but he's made sure he knew who the young man is by sight. "Come and join me for lunch?"

"I suppose so. . . " He hardly has to consider those words. It's only been two days since he's arrived, but he's learned plenty already about the nature of this place. Regardless, though.

It takes a moment for him to realize he's actually seen Jack before, as well. "Right." Although he's not the most social, he knows he probably should get to know his new teammates.

"Yeah, sure." Not that he hasn't eaten already.

You'd think that this would be the perfect moment for Chuck to bust out the frilly gowns, but no. No no. She's gone for something a lot more practical, something more suitable for kicking complete ass at rövkrok — which, coincidentally, she just did. Your ass, Captain Jack, is hers.

"Yes! Take that!"

It's a look she carries off with just as much panache as she once carried off the raincoat-with-nothing-underneath look. Jack rarely fails to be impressed by Chuck's outfits.

Though right now he's more impressed by her aptitude for ass-wrestling. For the third time in a row he's found himself trapped in an extremely undignified position with his (admittedly perfect and currently tights-clad) ass in the air by this slip of a girl.

Not that he cares much about dignity, but this is starting to get just a little much.

"Okay, I give in, you totally win at rövkrok!" he pants, twisting to try and get free, but to no avail.

Maybe it's in her genes, a gift from her aunt-turned-mom who is as adept at synchronised swimming as she is at brandishing a shotgun. It's beyond satisfying to up-end a man Jack's size like this but three times is more than enough and besides, she's getting warm and winded. A break would be nice and so she relinquishes her hold, pushing herself back on her feet.

"And don't you forget it!" She takes a moment to smooth down her disheveled hair, grinning all the while.

"I need a break... do you want to get something to drink?"

He laughs, and scrambles back the right way up and onto his feet, brushing himself down. If he'd known he was going to be doing so much scrabbling in the dirt, he wouldn't have worn velvet tights!

"A drink sounds like a great idea!" he agrees, offering her his arm to escort her away from the sports ring.

It's always fun when people get into it and Mary for one is happily striding across the dome, dressed like the queen she is. She watches him for awhile, amused, giving him applause at the end of a particularly grueling game of rövkrok.

Well, if she wants people who get into things, Jack's definitely her guy. Whatever he does, he does wholeheartedly! (Well, unless it's reading and research and then he tries to shelve it off onto Ianto.)

His reaction to applause from a gorgeous lady in a fabulous outfit is also characteristically wholehearted. After an initial, quizzical glance round to see who's cheering him on, since he doesn't recognise the voice, or the face, he gets up, dusts himself off, shakes his opponent's hand and heads over, because he's Jack, and he's curious.

"My lady," he says warmly, taking her hand and bowing deeply over it to brush his lips over the back of it. "Are we acquainted? I'm sure I ought to remember such a beautifuly lady!"

He still doesn't quite connect the dots. It's been long enough since she's been out, in any guise, that he's not thinking along the right lines.

"Oh yeah?" he asks, grinning. "Who've you been talking to? Or have we met somewhere in my future?"

Looking her over again in her perfect gown, he thinks he really wouldn't mind meeting her in his future.

"Renaissance?"

Jack's not the first person to utter that word today. Several have mentioned it, and it's even plastered on some of the signs throughout the stores selling (as much as this place can sell anything in the absence of currency), but not hailing from Earth, Princess Leia fails to understand its significance beyond the general definition.

He turns from setting down his emptied goblet of mulled wine ("Really not how I remember it!") at the dance and takes in Leia's queenly outfit with an impressed smile.

"Princess!" he declares, taking her hand and bowing low over it to brush it with his lips. "I've never seen you look so regal."

Leia catches sight of Han in the distance, and the sour look he's regarding Jack's bowed form with makes it look like someone dropped trig-berries into his drink. She rolls her eyes. Honestly.

"Are you implying that I need to be wearing a crown in order to appear regal, Captain?"

He chuckles, completely unabashed and absolutely not going to backtrack.

"Absolutely not! Just that this makes you appear even more so!"

He follows her glance over towards Han, whom he hasn't actually met yet but you'd have to be blind not to be able to tell he and Leia are a thing, or at least have been.

"May I ask you to dance, or will I be vaporised by a hot glare?"
