Day 357 — Body/Mind Swap Mingle
[Everything may be a bit topsy turvy today. Maybe you lost your head. Maybe you lost everything else. Or maybe you're perfectly you and it's just your friends and neighbors who don't make any sense.

Good luck going out and about to figure out your new surroundings.]

[ ...Haha he didn't plan this far, did he. Is it the Chekov he's been hanging out with or the Chekov he was watching on tv as a kid? Who knows! Who can tell. ]

I, uh... recognize you. [ Perfect. Not weird at all. ]

[No, this could be the moment of truth! Chekov has always wondered what his counterpart in the other timeline looks like, other than not at all like him.]

You recognize this face? It belongs to a Pavel Chekov?

It does. [ Ah. Hahaha. Okay. ] You're the other Chekov, aren't you?

I am, and I would guess that you are Doctor Reid. [No one else has given any indication that they're familiar with a version of him.] Correct me if I'm mistaken, please.

No, you're right. [ He sighs. ] Some day, huh?

It could be worse. At least we still get to be human. [Not having opposable thumbs is the actual worst.]

You're right — at least we have the same amount of arms and legs. [ He's not even a woman. Could've been loads worse. ]

So, you're okay?

Yes, why would I not be? [He really sees no reason to not be okay with this. Space is weird, man.] Are you okay?

I'm... coping. Better not to think about it. [ It's weird and awkward to be this handsome. ]

It is uncomfortable, being in the skin of someone else. I have no reason to be uneasy, though, since I'm still a Pavel Chekov.

That does make it easier, huh? No assumptions about who you are... nothing too faulty, at least.

None of that, no, but the hair is terrible.

You know the person that your body belongs to, correct? Does that make the experience more strange, or less strange?

Yeah, I do. [ A little too well, judging by the frown. ] We're... acquainted. It's pretty weird being in his body, but I'm more worried about what he's getting up to with mine.

What would he— [No, wait, he can think of things.] Ah. Aha.

Maybe it will help if you remind yourself that these are only virtual bodies. Maybe not even the virtual copies are numerically identical.

Virtual bodies or not, there's still a psychological bond. Even if this body is only a string of binary code, it's still... it feels wrong. The weight is all off.

[ Bulk, smell, eyesight. ]

Only for one day. [He pats Reid's shoulder in what is meant to be a comforting gesture. It's probably not that comforting.] There's a Russian saying about walking a mile in the shoes of someone else. Think of this as a chance to do that literally. Not very many people are given that opportunity.

You could say that about anything. Doesn't mean it's a good experience. [ Idealist Russian. ]

I wasn't aware that this situation called for a dichotomy.

Tch—you've bested me. I hope it will be at least a mediocre experience for you and, in the future, you will be able to look back on it and find humor in the situation.

I'm sure I will - it could've been worse, after all. [ A wry smile. ] I'll leave you to enjoy the day, I suppose.
