307 - Career day mingle
[ Career day has come to Marina and Sector 0 is abuzz with activity! Booths have been erected, some of them with information about the existing establishments, some of them empty for inmates to man if they feel like advertising their business and one dedicated to the process of starting something completely new. Each establishment comes with its own information poster about career opportunities, but they all follow the same basic principle:

Restaurants, bars and cafés — Waiter, dishwasher, cook, bartender, cleaning and maintenance staff.
Shops and stores — shop clerk, stock assistant, cleaning and maintenance staff.
Hospital — Cleaning and maintenance staff
Athletic Center — cleaning and maintenance staff. Cleaning staff for the horse stable need to be vetted before employed.
Prison maintenance — cleaning and maintenance staff, gardening.

While the career day is mostly geared towards commercial establishments, there's also space reserved for the school and defence force. Bots will be readily available to answer questions and streamline the application process for inmates that wish to take over or start a new establishment. ]

((ooc: The career day has begun! Mingle and be merry! More information can be found on the event post, which is also where you should direct your questions! ))

Defense Force sounds far less entertaining. What does the work entail? I think that Lieutenant Commander Data and Counselor Troi were both members, but I would not be able to contribute in the same ways as they did.

They were. [Not loving the past tense of that. She'd been getting closer to both of them.] Data was leading the investigative team.

But, it depends on what area you're interested in. There are combat teams, the investigative team and dispatch. Of course, getting me beverages would be an important duty regardless.

I'm interested in everything. In the City, I sometimes helped their equivalent of a defense force with investigative matters, and I have had basic combat training.

I will admit that I have never needed to act as a yeoman before.

Yeoman, huh? I don't think I know that one, but I'm guessing they are good with beverages. Always something new and exciting to learn, right?

Learning to prepare beverages isn't typically the work of physicists and decorated war heroes, but I have little else to do. Will I be exposed to secrets that make it impossible for me to leave your force alive, or am I allowed to resign if I choose to?

[She looks amused at that. Then again, leaving the X-Men in her world wasn't always a painless process, but death would be reserved for joining Apocalypse's forces, not just resigning.] Do they kill you if you want to leave Star Fleet?

No, of course they-- [He stops himself mid-sentence. After the Khan debacle and Admiral Marcus's conversion to the dark side, there's really no guarantees about anything. How unamusing.] Ah. Starfleet's policies are irrelevant. I think that I would like to join.

[Kitty's smirk drops and she looks more curiously at him before nodding.] There's an interview process with more than just me, but we can get that taken care of soon.

Everything okay?

[Chekov smiles (a little unconvincingly, maybe) in an attempt to brush aside any momentary lapses into seriousness. He doesn't know Kitty well enough for seriousness.] Of course, thank you. I'll try to give an impressive interview.

I'm sure you will. [Debating whether she's pressing more or letting that go. You can practically see the gears turning.]

Did something happen with Starfleet? [The gears landed on intrusiveness.]

[Darn intrusiveness! Chekov considers giving a vague reply, but he likes Kitty. Being real with her should be safe enough.]

The Starfleet that I know is not the same as the one that Counselor Troi and Lieutenant Commander Data may have told you about. We are from different timelines. From what I have learned about the other timeline, my Starfleet is more... militaristic, I would like to say. Less exploratory, less peaceful. More likely to keep secrets and entertain policies that go against the spirit of the Federation of Planets. The specifics are unimportant.

[Okay, so that was still vague. It's hard to admit that some of the Starfleet bigwigs were behaving so despicably that even a genocidal tyrant from the past didn't approve of their doings.]

[She listens with interest. She respected basically everyone she met from "Starfleet." Picard and Seven included.] You don't seem like the militaristic, secret keeping, spirit challenging type.

Then you begin to understand the problem. I'm far too noncombatant, indiscreet, and attached to certain principles to like the path that Starfleet has taken.

But that's in another universe, and I'm willing to trust that you don't often execute your subordinates.

Only enemies and I haven't done that at all while I've been here. [Though she has lost her subordinates to death on a mission, but that was at home too.]

This is encouraging. Assuming that my interview isn't so disastrous that I'm asked to leave, I will look forward to joining your defense force.

I look forward to that either way. An interview that bad would make for some good conversation.
