[She wakes up on the floating island with the blaring and vibrating of the giant speakers below her. She can't really process the message, and as it turns out that doesn't really matter to her at the moment because everything that happened yesterday is taking on a whole new context. She threatened Reid. She threatened Reid. He looked so hurt. So did Nathan. She reaches up to call him only to remember she left her communicator by the bed. She'll just have to get there herself then. Without another moment's delay she phases, dropping right through the island and getting herself to the apartment as fast as she can.]

Reid! Nathan!? [Calling out their names as soon as she drops in through the ceiling of the kitchen as it turns out.]

[Action | Open (After the breakup)]
[Nathan is still in the hospital. Reid is...wherever he went. The apartment is all hers at the moment and she has no intention of going back there until she's too exhausted to be awake long for it. She's not sure if she wants to avoid people or be with them, so for now she's just walking without paying much attention to where that takes her.]

You remember when disappeared, right? [You know, the last time she was heartbroken.] He came back from...

From being in love with someone else. They weren't together exactly. They didn't meet in person until he was trying to save her from a stalker. He watched her die.

The geneticist. [Not really important that she's a geneticist, but Reid mentioned it and it had stuck in her mind as she tried to picture the woman. The one he loved more than her without even holding her hand.]

[That gets a hug because what else can he do? Well it's more of an arm around her shoulders than a full blown hug but it stays there, comfortingly. It's the sort of thing Gwen would have done, the kind of thing she had done for him more times than he can count.]

That's horrible. For what happened to her and for how it had to affect you both. How long was it between that and when he got back?

[Her second hug today. Her first was from Spike as it happens. She doesn't relax into it, not yet, but she doesn't pull away either.] None. Seconds. I don't know. He didn't have time to recover.

[A pause.] That's why he didn't call me until the next day after he was back. I was upset about it because that day was the hardest day I've had in the prison...until today. I had been so hopeful he'd come back with the new arrivals that when I thought he didn't... I couldn't hold it together anymore. [She wishes she could feel as bad as she did that day. This feels so much worse somehow.]

[Oddly enough Ianto had his own semi-helpful though thankfully hug free conversation with Spike yesterday. It's not something he wants to bond over. And anyway it's not the point. This is the first time he's heard any of this and frankly he's surprised their relationship has lasted as long as it did since Reid's return with all that to contend with. Quietly, knowing it's going to seem like an abrupt change of subject until he can make his point he asks.]

Have I ever told you how I started dating Jack?

[Its not a nice story, and it's not one he's proud of, but maybe it will help a little. He might not know how she's feeling, but he can take a pretty good guess at what Reid is going through.] I worked at Torchwood London, originally, and I was dating a girl named Lisa. [Its still hard to talk about her.] The organization as invaded by Cybermen -they're humanity, upgraded, or at least they think they are. Metal bodies, all emotions removed, really dangerous.

They were halfway through her conversion process when they were defeated. [He doesn't want to talk about dragging her out of there, or what that process did to her so he skips it.] Torchwood exists to destroy alien threats so I knew what they'd do if they found her, but they were also the best resource I had for finding a way to fix her so I got us to Cardiff and talked Jack into giving me a job and hid her in our Hub until I could figure something out. I only started sleeping with Jack to keep him from getting suspicious and to have an excuse to be around at odd hours. I thought I had it undercontrol but then her programming took over and she started killing people and I tried to stop Jack and the rest of my friends when they attempted to destroy her. He killed her in the end, and she died in my arms, just like what happened to Reid.

[He glances out the window for a moment, quiet, then adds.] I loved her so much I risked the entire human race to try and save her, and I hated Jack for a long time after that, but he was there for me when I needed help coming back from that, and he let me take my time with our relationship, too. I didn't want anything to do with him for a long time and even then I didn't want anything serious, not at first. I know it's not the same with you and Reid, but I don't know, I suppose my point is love is complicated and a bit stupid at times and maybe we can love more than one person or do it in different ways without having to give up hope entirely.

Sorry, I suppose that was a bit long.

[She relaxes against him, putting a supportive arm around him to as she listens. It's not so bad. Comforting even. She probably wouldn't have if she couldn't also see it as comforting him, but it works and she doesn't have to think too hard about any of it, because there is listening to be done.

She is learning a lot about him that she suddenly feels odd for not having known before. Maybe not all the intimate details but she really didn't have the greatest sense of what kind of world they were from even with hints from conversations from previous Doctor's and Jack.

But more than that she feels for Ianto and his loss. Maybe a little surprised that he was putting out to save him and his girlfriend form suspicion, but she wasn't there and as long as it is, she's sure he's leaving out plenty of connecting details. Besides, when you love someone, you're willing to do things... She was ready to kill Clay recently because he threatened Reid's life.]

I'm sorry about Lisa. [She means that even if it has been a long time.]

There's just one problem with the moral of the story. I'm not the one who gave up hope. I'm the one who kept fighting for us while he kept pushing me away. I'm the one who wanted to work through it together and be there for him. And I'm not the one who killed her. I'm the one who as soon as he was back he would have remembered just as much her. How long do I keep fighting when he's telling me to stop? When he's showing me he loves the memory of a girl he never got to be with more than he loves me? [Voice definitely cracking here, she stands up and takes a deep breath, pacing through the coffee table as if it wasn't there.]

Thanks. [Its been about two years now and he still misses her and still hates what happened but it's different now than it was. It's something he can live with, and a lot of that is thanks to Jack.]

I don't think I'll ever stop loving her or stop missing her, but that doesn't mean I don't love Jack. It took me a long time to stop pushing him away after what happened, and I think it took him just as long to forgive me for everything, but loving each other now doesn't take away from what I had with her or what he had with John or anyone else over the years. I don't think you love just one person for your entire life but I don't think that means anything you might have with a person you care about is less special. I don't know how long it's going to hurt him to have lost her or how long he might push you away but I don't think grieving over her means he loved her more than you or cares about you less. I pushed Jack away because having feelings for him made me feel like I was losing her all over again. Like I had to hold onto that pain and not let myself be happy because she as gone.

Listen, I'm glad it worked out for you, but it's not the same. Our relationship isn't starting. He knows exactly what he's throwing away.

It's not like he said he needed time. He wanted me gone. [And as much as this hurts right now the idea of holding on to some kind of false hope that he'll change his mind and want to be with her hurts more and makes her feel more than a little pathetic even if she knows if he came in that door right now saying it was a mistake that she'd run to him.]

[She nods and sits back down. This time on the coffee table, facing him, but her gaze is on the floor.] Yeah, it's not the first time he's tried to end things since he got back. Not even the second... I've been fighting so hard. But... I was the only one fighting.

After Pitor I never thought I'd... [Getting choked up. She closes her eyes.] I wanted to marry him. [Softer.] I was ready to marry him.
