250 - Fear Itself Mingle
[ Today is a day where most would be at risk of oversleeping. The dome lies dark like in the dead of night. The sun hasn’t risen today, streetlights casting a dull yellow glow and occasionally flickering out into nothing, only to spark back to life a moment later. There is no electric flicker from the kiosk. The Wardens are still. The wardens are silent.

The dome isn’t silent. There is a rustling of leaves, a snapping of twigs. Claws, scraping against concrete. The inhuman screech of an animal in peril, an animal hunting, an animal hunted. A screech that promises sharp claws and sharper teeth and blood.

The dome isn’t still either. There is something moving, thick as a shadow, tangible as a chill down your spine. Something that doesn’t belong here, something that snuck in when no one was looking. A boogeyman under the bed. A ghost in the closet. A will o’ the wisp, blinking in and out of existence under the flickering streetlights. Whatever it is it’s moving, leaving a trail of cold, dead fear wherever it passes. Something dark. A shadow so pitch black that it blots out the very lights in your heart, dragging your fears out screaming and kicking, reducing even the strongest, toughest man to a blubbering baby.

Perhaps best to stay in bed today, Marina. ]

"I'll keep it in mind. I'm sure I'll want something other than cereal soon," Sarah smiled. The more the burgers cook, the more Sarah realizes just how hungry she really is. She tries not to hover, but it's difficult not to.

"Thank you again," she says suddenly. "For saving me, and... taking care of me. But not... you know..."

"Being an annoying parent?" She smiled at that. "Sure thing. It's nuce to have someone watch your back and look after you sometimes."

She checked everything one more time and then used the spatula to slide the finished burgers on to the waiting buns. She nodded for Sarah to follow her to the first table in the dining room, right by the kitchen door.

"Let me know what you think," she said. She was still new to the actual running of a restaurant, so approval was important yet.

I don't have orgasmic food experience icon for her... sorry.

"Well... yes. For not being a regular parent."

She can't always explain what she's feeling. But she can follow food. That's for certain.

After putting what she wanted on her burger, Sarah took a very large, very appreciative bite. Her eyes closed and she actually groaned as she tasted it. It was as though she'd never eaten before.

It's all good. ^_^

That got Piper to chuckle a little.

"I get it." She shrugged a little as Sarah started eating. "I didn't really have my parents around when I grew up, so I guess I just don't know what regular parents are like."

Not that it would have mattered with having a witch for a mother and grandmother. Though, having their powers bound after their mother's death kind of nullified the whole witch thing.

Sarah slows down enough to actually talk between mouthfuls. "You didn't? I'm sorry. What happened?"

So her parents might be annoying to deal with, but Sarah didn't want them to disappear entirely. Not her dad at least.

She looked down at her plate, taking a moment before starting.

"My mom was killed when I was really young. My grandmother moved in to help take care of us because my dad had to work, but they didn't get along. Eventually, he left, and Grams raised the three of us on her own."

That was the easiest way of saying it. Talking about water demons and witchcraft and demon attacks on the house eventually driving her dad out and forcing her grandmother to bind her and her sisters' powers was just way too complicated to dump out all at once.

"I'm sorry," Sarah repeats automatically. Death wasn't something she'd dealt with yet. She wasn't sure about her grandparents. But her mom had just left. Not died.

"I... that must have been hard." Socially awkward teenager is socially awkward.

"I think it was hardest on Phoebe," Piper said. "Prue and I, we knew Mom. Phoebe doesn't really remember her. She was too young." She frowned a bit and then shook her head. "But, hey. We came out of it mostly okay. It took a while and we've had some rough patches, but we're really close as sisters now." The whole Charmed Ones thing helped, but they worked really hard to get along.

Sarah nodded. "I mean, I guess. My only sibling is still a baby... and he's really only my half brother."

"I have a half-sister," Piper offered. "The youngest of us, Paige. She's our mother's daughter, but she has a different father." It was still a little awkward to think about. "We actually only found out about her just around a year ago."

"Really?" Sarah looked interested. "But... you only found out about her a year ago? What happened?" Tact... she doesn't have it.

"It's kind of a long story, I guess," she said. "And not really the best one. My parents had separated for a bit, and Mom had been with another man. She kept the pregnancy secret and didn't tell anyone, even after she came back, because she gave Paige up for adoption."

"Sorry. Shouldn't have asked. There's just... so much going on and so many new things and... I don't normally talk to a lot of other people. More of a reader than anything..."

"No, it's okay," she said. "You were curious. We don't really know each other all that well. It's natural to ask questions." Piper tried to shrug it off. She didn't want Sarah to feel terrible about asking.

"Even so," Sarah shrugs uncomfortably, "I should have known better." She takes another bite of the burger... golly is it good!... and looks back to Piper after swallowing. "But here! You can ask me another question. Then we'll be even!"

That got her to laugh a little. "Even, huh?" Things, as complicated as they were as a teenager, had been easier, now that she looked back. No weird witch powers, no bills, no job, no multi-dimensional prisons... She kind of wanted to go back to that, but with the insight to know she had it better.

"Okay." She looked thoughtful. "Well, we've covered the family stuff, I think. What kinds of things do you do outside of school?"

"I read. A lot. And um... sometimes, when I can get away, I go to the park and I act out my favorite scenes with my dog Merlin."

She smiles a little abashed. "Irene thinks it's silly. It's why she makes me babysit all the time... because according to her I don't do anything. But it is something! And I also sometimes go to the movie theatre in town to see the new movies."

Sarah doesn't mention any friends. She doesn't have any.

Piper smiled a little.

"Sounds like you're kind of a bookworm. Not that it's a bad thing," she said. "And movies are good, too. And getting outside." She chuckled a little.

"You know, my grandmother had a dog when I was in high school. His name was Rasputin."

Of course, Piper was used to some level of social interaction with friends and what not, so it was kind of assumed. She didn't catch on that the omission was for a particular reason such as that.
