250 - Fear Itself Mingle
[ Today is a day where most would be at risk of oversleeping. The dome lies dark like in the dead of night. The sun hasn’t risen today, streetlights casting a dull yellow glow and occasionally flickering out into nothing, only to spark back to life a moment later. There is no electric flicker from the kiosk. The Wardens are still. The wardens are silent.

The dome isn’t silent. There is a rustling of leaves, a snapping of twigs. Claws, scraping against concrete. The inhuman screech of an animal in peril, an animal hunting, an animal hunted. A screech that promises sharp claws and sharper teeth and blood.

The dome isn’t still either. There is something moving, thick as a shadow, tangible as a chill down your spine. Something that doesn’t belong here, something that snuck in when no one was looking. A boogeyman under the bed. A ghost in the closet. A will o’ the wisp, blinking in and out of existence under the flickering streetlights. Whatever it is it’s moving, leaving a trail of cold, dead fear wherever it passes. Something dark. A shadow so pitch black that it blots out the very lights in your heart, dragging your fears out screaming and kicking, reducing even the strongest, toughest man to a blubbering baby.

Perhaps best to stay in bed today, Marina. ]

((OOC: Event information HERE. We ask the winners of the raffle to fill out a simple survey and then tag into the Vapor thread HERE! Happy mingling, Marinanites! ))

[He steps closer again, more concerned with Dexter than with making a swift getaway. He hasn't stopped glancing around them-- anything that wants to get to the younger man is going to have to go through him-- but his focus is divided.]

Nothing new there, right?

It shouldn't be.

[ Stopping. That sharpens his anxiety a bit, heightens the urgency with which he needs to examine his surroundings. It's almost anxiety. How unbecoming. ]

But it was different.

[As nervous as a common human being. Your fake sister would never believe it, Dexter.]

Different how?

[He should be guiding them back toward the apartment, he knows that, but this is important. He can't help his distraction.]

[ He doesn't want to go into this. Not now. Not here. Preferably, not ever or anywhere, but he wants to move. He doesn't want to be here. ]

Must have been the effect.

We should go.

I'm trying to help, you don't have to lie.

[He can't help a little twitch of a frown, even if he fundamentally agrees. There's a shrill cry in the distance-- something out hunting. If he could be certain it was just a raptor it wouldn't be so unsettling.]

But you're right. Can't stay in one place. [He glances in what he's pretty sure is the right direction one last time, before catching Dexter's eye.] Ready?

[ His glances flickers to Rudy there, but he doesn't respond. Not to the assertion that he's lying, which he both is and isn't. He does't know what's happening to him. He really has no intention of spilling out his confused mess of emotions for Deb's boyfriend, but he has even less intention of doing so standing still right here.

He gives a nod when Rudy catches his eye. ]

Ready.

[ Gathering all the control he's got left, he holds that knife in a more effective grasp - less tension, more ready mobility. ]

[Without another word he takes the lead, moving as quickly as he dares... which under the circumstances, given limited visibility and a questionably in-control Dexter in tow, is not so fast at all. He's quiet-- too quiet, really, even his breathing steady and slow so he can listen to what's around them, outside the meager circles of light.]

[ Dexter is keeping up all right, despite the uneasy tension that remains in his core, the slight dryness of his throat. His eyes dart a bit more than is strictly necessary, the nagging sensation at the back of his mind.

The blood. Far too much blood. ]

[Too much, but there's more blood in store tonight.

Brian stops short at a sound off to their right. There's no time for any warning; he manages to turn and bring his knife up and not much more before the raptor is on them. It's a smaller one, luckily, and alone; a few wounds across its narrow, scaly muzzle suggest this isn't its first fight. He slashes at it, barely grazing the beast's shoulder as he twists back to avoid a claw aimed at his gut.]

[ Dexter may be initially caught off guard - so on edge that he's easier to startle, ironically - but it doesn't last very long. His grip is confident on that knife, and his movements are quick. There's an efficient brutality to Dexter at the best of times, but that's what it is: efficient. This is not Dexter at the best of times, and though his movements are effective, there is an altogether different air to them. While it would be wrong to say he's not normally vicious, there isn't usually this much visible rage in his actions. They're generally controlled, careful, precise.

Instead, he lunges at the raptor as it aims that claw for Rudy's gut, the knife striking at it in a swift and strong arc that slashes at its neck. Even his expression is twisted in his rage. ]

[He doesn't need to know Dexter all that well to know this is desperately unusual; he knows how the younger man works, through study and instinct alike. They are methodical. Neat. Not like this-- and of course, circumstances make a difference, but there's more to it than that.

If he thought it had anything to do with him, Brian might be touched.

As it is, he notes the raw, raging twists and stabs as something to ponder later, and takes advantage of having an ally. The raptor turns its focus on Dexter, and Brian pulls away from the flailing claw. He can't get in close enough to eviscerate it without risking himself, so he steadies himself, wraps both hands around the handle of his knife, and thrusts the blade into the dinosaur's eye while it's distracted by Dexter's attacks.]

[ Uncontrolled he may be, but not ineffective. When the raptor's attentions turn to him, he dodges, and strikes back again, this time thrusting the knife into its windpipe instead of taking the route of the biting slash.

An instinctive part of his brain, even in this state, notes Rudy's action: going for the eye is sound strategically, but most normal human beings don't have the stomach to follow through on that strategy. While present circumstances don't allow for him to pursue that curiosity - internal and external circumstances alike - it is something he catches on a less than entirely conscious level.

For now, he twists the knife in the purchase it's found in the beast's neck, twists it, and pulls it back with a curve - all the while dodging increasingly frantic talons. ]

[Not only does he have the stomach for it, he has the strength; the beast whips its head side to side, screaming and lashing out at both of them, but Brian doesn't lose his grasp, though he cries out reflexively as his shoulder is wrenched uncomfortably.

It's a losing battle, though, for the raptor. Between the blood loss and the steel blade working its way into its brain, its struggles become less effective, and soon enough it falls at their feet.

Brian pulls his sleeve over the heel of his hand to scrub a spray of blood off his face, bending to try to retrieve his knife from the raptor's skull.]

[ Dexter is breathing hard when it goes down, coming back to himself after the explosion of anger. He comes back off of it a little more easily than he had earlier, more fresh from his encounter with Vapor. As Rudy gets the knife, he glances around guardedly, watching the shadows for any other movement.

The sound the other man had produced, at least, didn't entirely escape his notice. It would be a tactical disadvantage if one of them were injured. ]

You all right?

[Straightening up, he flicks the blade off to one side to get the worst of the mess off it, but it's not like any part of him is neat by now.]

I'll manage,

[he says with a nod, rolling his shoulder. There's only a slight twinge of discomfort; nothing damaged, he thinks, just sore.]

You?

Fine.

[ Since he's only speaking in terms of physical injury, that's not untrue. He's not completely without wounds, but he also hasn't been incapacitated or eviscerated, so he's counting it as fine.

Still on guard, he nods in the direction they were moving. ]

I don't see any others.

[He grimaces, giving up and wiping the knife on his already-ruined jeans.]

Too much noise. Let's go.

Of course they will.

[ Dexter does likewise, blood onto more blood - and he shudders at it, involuntary and violent. Somewhere beneath his conscious thoughts, that boy cries out, and he feels the anxious energy building up again. He wants to get back to the apartment, needs to get out of these clothes. To take a shower - at least one. He needs to do something.

He focuses, steadying himself, and starts moving. ]
