250 - Fear Itself Mingle
[ Today is a day where most would be at risk of oversleeping. The dome lies dark like in the dead of night. The sun hasn’t risen today, streetlights casting a dull yellow glow and occasionally flickering out into nothing, only to spark back to life a moment later. There is no electric flicker from the kiosk. The Wardens are still. The wardens are silent.

The dome isn’t silent. There is a rustling of leaves, a snapping of twigs. Claws, scraping against concrete. The inhuman screech of an animal in peril, an animal hunting, an animal hunted. A screech that promises sharp claws and sharper teeth and blood.

The dome isn’t still either. There is something moving, thick as a shadow, tangible as a chill down your spine. Something that doesn’t belong here, something that snuck in when no one was looking. A boogeyman under the bed. A ghost in the closet. A will o’ the wisp, blinking in and out of existence under the flickering streetlights. Whatever it is it’s moving, leaving a trail of cold, dead fear wherever it passes. Something dark. A shadow so pitch black that it blots out the very lights in your heart, dragging your fears out screaming and kicking, reducing even the strongest, toughest man to a blubbering baby.

Perhaps best to stay in bed today, Marina. ]

Jack watched in horror as Mal stepped right onto Ianto’s torso – and his foot went straight through it, to the ground. His eyes went wide with shock. Shaking off Mal’s reaching hands with the strength of utter terror, he flung himself forward to scrabble at the Ianto’s body, and found to his shock that his own hands went right through it too!

“What the fuck is going on?” he cried, relief mixing with a new kind of fear – that of the unknown. He still wasn’t really taking in anything Mal was saying; the only thing that had got through was the sight of that foot sinking into Ianto’s apparently insubstantial body.

Mal clapped a hand over the other man's mouth as he cried out. "I don't know," he growled. "But I'm seeing reavers an' there's raptors in the store."

"Now if yer done hollerin' " He gently took his hand off the other man's mouth, "let's move out."

Somewhere, he thought he'd heard the term 'reavers' before, but his mind was so full of both specific and general terror that he couldn't place it. Just as he hadn't placed Mal's face yet, though that might partly be due to the fact that the last time he'd seen it it had been wearing a bonnet.

He fought the hand over his mouth automatically, but the struggling did at least move him a few inches away from the centre of the fear pocket. Brain feeling a tiny bit clearer, he could see the sense in not crying out to attract more raptors, and nodded, staying quiet when Mal removed his hand. He cast one more look back towards Ianto's lifeless body, the sight of which still filled him with terror even now he knew it wasn't real, and then said roughly, "Yeah, let's go."

Figuring the man would follow now, Mal stalked his way back to the horse, each step flooding him with more relief. The horse was nervous. "Woah girl. We're fine. Gunna be just shiny when it's all done," he murmured, patting the mare's snout. Mal stuck his foot into the stirrup and swung himself into the saddle before turning to Jack and holding out an arm.

"Ain't so easy to ride two, but a bit safer than you on foot."

Jack didn't point out that he had a gun and couldn't die. He was feeling a very strong desire to get out of the store and as far away from it as possible. The horse seemed like a sensible way of achieving that.

"Thanks, I appreciate it," he nodded, taking Mal's arm and, after a bit of effort, managing to climb up behind him.

Mal looks around for the best way out, then steering the horse in a wide circle around the fallen raptor, he starts making his way out. He walks her... always walking when possible. It's quieter. And easier to see. And keeps her from getting to worn out.

"Let me know if'n you see anythin,' he grunts back to Jack as he readjusts the pitchfork in his right hand.

Jack gradually sits up straighter as they leave the pool of fear behind and his mind clears. Away from it – and still within the bright lights of the store – the fear he’d felt seems ridiculous.

Except that a part of him deep inside knows it’s not ridiculous. Ianto could die at any time, and right now it’s even more likely. He’s been pushing that fear deep down inside him but he can’t deny it forever. Eventually he’s going to have to face it.

“Seems all quiet in here,” he says, dragging himself back to the present, and nods towards the doors, which they’re rapidly approaching. “Probably not so quiet out there.”

Mal frowns, not that Jack can see. He's normally one to save his own skin an' not too many other people's. The fight from the raptors is helping steady the need for a brawl that constantly crawls over him, and he'd rather be out here. And while he'd never say so to Jack or anyone else, Mal is actually willing and happy to save people today. There were enough who seemed helpless. And there were the Reavers he knew didn't exist.

"Not so quiet out there, but things don't feel right in here. I'd rather take my chances out there."

"Heh, have to agree with you there, pal. I'm much more comfortable out in the open. Plus - you know - it seems like that's where the real threats are. The creatures that can tear people in half, as opposed to just make them freeze in terror. That's what people really need saving from."

He pauses, head cocked to one side as he thinks about it. "Though clearly saving from the formless fear is also required on occasion. Thanks for that."

"It ain't often I get to be the big damn hero," Mal grinned back at Jack's gratitude. Other than that, he has nothing to say to it. He was a good guy deep down. He just didn't like to show it.

A click of his tongue and the horse moved through the automatic door. Things were quiet in their immediate vicinity. Mal kept his head on a swivel as he kept aware of all the sounds around them.

"Ah well, glad I could oblige, to give you the chance for once!" Jack said cheerfully, ducking down automatically as they went through the doorway and then, equally automatically, doing the same as Mal and keeping a keen lookout.

"Raptor at nine o'clock!" he called, wriggling to try and get his gun out in time.

The two of them were by far too heavy for the horse to get away, so instead, Mal turned the horse towards the creature and kicked it into a run. He held the pitchfork like a lance, ready to hopefully plunge it into the creatures chest. It worked a few times before.

"Hang on. And try to avoid the butt of the pitchfork..."

Trying to kill the raptor was better than trying to run from it anyway, in Jack’s book. If they ran, it might go after someone who was less able to deal with it than they were.

He hung on as instructed, leaning to the side to avoid the pitchfork, and laughed with exhilaration as Mal raced the horse towards the leering raptor.

The impact hurt his already jarred shoulder, and Mal grunted with the effort, but the inertia driving them forward helped drive the pitchfork through the raptor enough that it poked out the other end.

Either way, it was another kill to add to his record, and Serenity was comfortable enough by now that she didn't panic every time there was blood.

Jack braced himself to steady Mal as the pitchfork impacted on the raptor, helping him drive it forward. He laughed again when he saw the creature stagger back and then fall to the ground.

“Fantastic!” he declared. “Think I should get me a pitchfork. So much more fun than shooting, and far more sustainable a weapon too – as long as you can get it out of the carcass again, at least!”

((OOC: OMG, I love the fact Mal’s called his horse ‘Serenity’!))

"Don't know if there's any left," he grinned. "Wouldn't mind a gun though. The shoulder jarring ain't all it's cracked up to be."

He convinced the horse to back up so he could maneuver the pitchfork out of the lizard. "See any others?"

((OOC: Of course she's named Serenity! It was that or Inara))

"Sorry, mine's not for hire," Jack replied wryly. "Actually, I was trying to find myself a knife or two – that's why I was in the store – but apparently I got sidetracked before I got that far." Realising at this point that he'd left without obtaining one.

He peered about them, but couldn't see or hear anything moving nearby. "Seems to be clear for the moment. I should probably leave you to it – head off in another direction. The more ground we can cover, the sooner everyone will be safe from those raptors."

((OOC: I just hadn't thought about him naming her at all! *g*))

"Don't know that a knife's gonna do you much good unless yer really close," Mal muttered. "But sure, I can let you off here." Mal looks around to make sure no other raptors are about to make an appearance. "If you start to feel frightened, turn around and walk in the other direction. I don't wanna find you cowering in a corner again."

"Well, I could do with a weapon to use if one does manage to get close enough that my gun's no use," Jack remarked, checking about them again, but all seemed quiet, so he swung his leg round and slid off the horse.

"And noted." He grinned tightly, and tipped Mal a casual salute. "Thanks, Captain."

Mal nodded and tipped his hat. "And you Captain. Stay shiny." And with that, he urged the horse forward as he looked for more people to save, or dinosaurs to fight.
