250 - Fear Itself Mingle
[ Today is a day where most would be at risk of oversleeping. The dome lies dark like in the dead of night. The sun hasn’t risen today, streetlights casting a dull yellow glow and occasionally flickering out into nothing, only to spark back to life a moment later. There is no electric flicker from the kiosk. The Wardens are still. The wardens are silent.

The dome isn’t silent. There is a rustling of leaves, a snapping of twigs. Claws, scraping against concrete. The inhuman screech of an animal in peril, an animal hunting, an animal hunted. A screech that promises sharp claws and sharper teeth and blood.

The dome isn’t still either. There is something moving, thick as a shadow, tangible as a chill down your spine. Something that doesn’t belong here, something that snuck in when no one was looking. A boogeyman under the bed. A ghost in the closet. A will o’ the wisp, blinking in and out of existence under the flickering streetlights. Whatever it is it’s moving, leaving a trail of cold, dead fear wherever it passes. Something dark. A shadow so pitch black that it blots out the very lights in your heart, dragging your fears out screaming and kicking, reducing even the strongest, toughest man to a blubbering baby.

Perhaps best to stay in bed today, Marina. ]

"Huh, that's co-" He stopped at the noise, his handy dandy convenience store scavenged spear coming up to the ready as he looked around. He listened carefully as he turned his head, working out where they were first, then staring that way as he tried to figure out of they were coming towards them.

Standing next to a horse probably wasn't a great idea if it spooked on him...

Slowly he reaches a hand down to Duo, intending to essentially get the kid behind him on the horse. Because if they could go at the things at a gallop, they'd have a much better chance of surviving. In his mind at least.

Duo glanced a little nervously at the offered hand. He'd never been on a horse. This would be... interesting? Still, horses could run faster than humans, so, if it meant staying alive, he'd be willing to give it a try, he supposed. He gripped Mal's hand and the back of the saddle, then pulled himself up.

Well, this was awkward. Where to hold on to?

Mal didn't wait for Duo to figure it out, he gave the horse a gentle kick and it set off. Duo would figure out soon enough to grab Mal's coat or around his waist. Mal didn't care much. As long as the kid was safe.

Oops! Grabbing happened, and rather quickly considering. Duo had been taken by surprise, and he gripped the coat tightly with his free hand, still holding his homemade spear with the other.

"So, uh... where we headed?"

"That'a way," Mal called out, pointing his pitchfork towards the beach. There was only one creature, which Mal figured they could both take out. Serenity was doing well, heading straight towards it. And the raptor took one look at them and screeched happily thinking it had a very nice dinner coming up.

"Look out for others," Mal called as he leveled the weapon and kicked Serenity on to greater speed.

Oh... hey. Monster jousting! He hadn't expected that, but okay.

"Uh, sure-" The horse was charging! Duo tightened his grip in alarm, both the one on Mal's coat and the one on his weapon. Pitchforks were probably much better made for this sort of thing. His knife on a broom handle would likely lose its blade in the monster, so he held it out of the way and, as suggested, watched for other monsters.

"Hoo boy!" This was another Marina first for him!

The raptor quickly realized that perhaps this wasn't going to end the way it wanted. The horse, with so much momentum, couldn't stop itself and went barreling straight towards the creature. The raptor tried to leap at the last second, but Mal wouldn't allow it. He gouged the pitchfork into the beast with all his might, twisting so it'd cause even more damage.

The jar that went up his shoulder made him swear, but it was worth it to see the monster fall down, severely injured.

Duo had to shift to avoid getting jammed with the back end of the pitchfork handle, but it still gave him a good sharp poke in the ribs. He grunted, but didn't loosen his grip.

"Nice shot..."

He glanced back. There was a snarl behind them.

"Might not wanna stay and look at our kill too long, though," he said.

"You may be right," he grunted as he pulled the pitchfork out and kicked Serenity into a jog. "Keep a sharp look out... I'm aiming for someplace we can get indoors."

Mainly a building with a big enough door to get the horse through.

"Sounds like a plan."

Stables? Because that would be big enough... and they could hang out in the hey loft. Unless those raptor things could jump high once they got in. Maybe they could find a way to lock the doors?

"They're closed up tight. We'll be sittin' ducks tryin' to get them open," Mal replied.

"But they are pretty safe I think." He turned the Serenity around towards them... get her some water and food and calm her and the others down.

"How'd you get the horse?" Unless he locked up behind himself. "And, if we can get in quick, it could be a good place to hole up for a while. Though... how we can get in quick...

He started hatching a plan.

"How locked up is it?"

"Barricaded the front door once we left. Just gotta move all the stuff outta the way."

He's thinking too as he turns Serenity to the stables. The rest must be spooked too.

"Alright."

Duo considered the options.

"You've got the horse, and the knowledge on riding," he said. "Think you can keep up a distraction and keep them away from the door long enough for me to get them open for ya?"

Mal looks around, a plan hatching in his own head. Probably not a good plan, but a plan nonetheless. "Should be doable." He kicks the horse and in a few moments they're at the stables. "Do what you have to," he grins, waiting for Duo to get off the horse before kicking her into a run and calling all the creatures to follow him.

"Got it." He pushed back, sliding off the horse easily enough and running for the door. He didn't even look back as Mal took off. There wasn't time for any friendly sentimentalities. His buddy was being bait, so he needed to work hard and fast to make sure the monsters didn't actually catch that bait.

Spinning his makeshift spear around, he was able to use the broom handle for leverage against some of the stuff to get it moved fast. Just wide enough for a horse to get through on one of the doors. He left the other door blocked. The less they had to rebuild of their barricade, the better.

Once he had it open, he gave a shrill whistle back, hoping Mal was close enough to hear. They could block the door back up again from the inside once they were through.

Mal had managed to spear yet another of the beasts. He looked around when he heard the whistle, and seeing no others, kicked Serenity into one final burst of speed back to the stables. He hoped Duo had enough sense to keep clear of the door as he barreled up, keeping the horse at full speed. Once they got in, he'd reign her into a short stop. She'd rear he imagined, but it was the best he could do. Keep 'em both safe.

The plan went smooth, which never happened to Mal. He leapt off Serenity the moment she was still and ran to help Duo close and lock up. "Nice goin"

He definitely knew the horse was coming, and gave them space as they came in, shoving the door shut behind them as they came in. He winked at Mal as he came up to help finish closing up the door.

"Thanks. I have my moments of doing something right." He chuckled. Once the door was secure, he stepped back a bit to examine their work. "Looks pretty solid."

"Well, they didn't come in the firs' time. Think we'll be fine now." Mal turned back to the horse who was still chomping at the bit. He stepped in front of her, his hands grabbing the reigns and pulled her in close. "Shh... shhh. Easy girl. Easy does it. Nothin' here to kill you. Let's put you back in yer stall," he murmured, leading her to her place. There he began the process of taking care of her. Taking the saddle off, brushing, checking the hooves.

"See how all the other horses are all right?"

"Uhh... sure." He was, of course, completely horse clueless, so this should prove to be interesting. He wandered the barn, looking them all over kind of quickly. "They seem okay," he said. "WWhat am I looking for?" He glanced back, watching Mal work.

Mal looked back at Duo. "You ain't been around horses much?" he asked. "Jus'... check if they seem nervous. Don't want any of 'em dying of fright."

"That can happen?" Duo looked nervous about them now. "Uh, well, horses weren't real common on space colonies back home. I didn't see one in person until I was like a teenager."

Mal rolled his eyes at Serenity and came out from behind her. "C'mon Duo. Let's take a look." None of the horses were particularly calm, but only one seemed really in danger of creating more problems. Mal opened the stall door and walked in, clicking his tongue softly. He held out a sugar cube (he'd taken to carrying them in his pockets) to try and distract it. The horse froze for a moment, and hesitantly leaned its head forward to take the sweet. "There we go," Mal murmured, stroking the horse's neck. "That's it... nice and calm."

"Okaaaaaayyyy..."

He followed Mal around the stables, looking at the different horses. He also smartly stay outside the stall in question as Mal went in to try and calm it down, watching from a safe distance. No point in spooking it more than it was, right?

"Huh... does that always work?"
