250 - Fear Itself Mingle
[ Today is a day where most would be at risk of oversleeping. The dome lies dark like in the dead of night. The sun hasn’t risen today, streetlights casting a dull yellow glow and occasionally flickering out into nothing, only to spark back to life a moment later. There is no electric flicker from the kiosk. The Wardens are still. The wardens are silent.

The dome isn’t silent. There is a rustling of leaves, a snapping of twigs. Claws, scraping against concrete. The inhuman screech of an animal in peril, an animal hunting, an animal hunted. A screech that promises sharp claws and sharper teeth and blood.

The dome isn’t still either. There is something moving, thick as a shadow, tangible as a chill down your spine. Something that doesn’t belong here, something that snuck in when no one was looking. A boogeyman under the bed. A ghost in the closet. A will o’ the wisp, blinking in and out of existence under the flickering streetlights. Whatever it is it’s moving, leaving a trail of cold, dead fear wherever it passes. Something dark. A shadow so pitch black that it blots out the very lights in your heart, dragging your fears out screaming and kicking, reducing even the strongest, toughest man to a blubbering baby.

Perhaps best to stay in bed today, Marina. ]

Yeah... I think so. I'm not hurt or anything.

[She was breathing hard and holding her side from a stitch, but otherwise, no raptors injuries.]

What about you?

Fine... bit more out of shape than I thought I was. [ A deep inhale, followed by a winded exhale. ] Maybe I should give up smokin'...

That would probably be helpful.

[Piper wasn't into that kind of stuff herself. Though, she did run a nightclub back home, and definitely indulged in the occasional drinking binge... but that was another thing.]

Take your time. I think we'll be okay for a bit. I've been using the restaurant as a base, since I've got food and protection here.

[ Time spent with a guerilla army and a chainsmoking boyfriend makes bad habits all too easy to pick up. He doesn't smoke much tho. That's a plus. ]

Thanks... that's real clever of you. Ain't no tellin' how long this'll last. [ Hmn. ] Think, uh... think I could get some water?

[She'd give him that, but no smoking in her restaurant!]

Yeah. Sure. [She gave him a small smile and headed into the back, waving for him to follow if he wanted.] You can come. Maybe grab a quick bite to eat before you head out again.

[ He'd never dream of it! Especially not after offerings of food. It's... been a day. Long time since he had something to eat. ]

Sure, if you don't mind? It'd be awfully kind of you.

I don't mind. There's a whole kitchen back there. [She laughed a little.] C'mon. I'll cook something.

What do you like? [She started heading back, waving for him to follow.]

[She laughed a little.]

Please... I'm Piper. You don't have to call me 'ma'am'.

[It kind of weirded her out a little.]

As for convenient, well... anything's really convenient. Cooking is kind of a passion of mine, I guess. Let's see...

[Once in the kitchen, she started poking around the walk-in cooler and storage areas to see what would be easy to toss together.]

Yeah. It's always been a dream of mine to run a restaurant. I hadn't gotten around to it back home. Just a nightclub, but I was working towards it.

[She came back with a few things.]

How do you take your grilled cheese? [She grinned, feeling like some comfort food.]

That's a good dream. People always need t' eat, right? [ For a moment, he lets his mind wander to Festival. Back then he didn't think about it too much, but now he definitely knows how lucky he was to be taken in by that guy when he first came to the city. Fresh off the train, a real country hick that probably would've gotten himself killed his first week had it not been for Festival. ]

Oh, uhm... gooey?

True. They do. [She chuckled.]

Gooey it is. [She fired up the griddle. It would take a few minutes, so she started on prepping the bread.]

Do you have any favorite things to eat? You know... for future menu ideas. I can't keep the same menu forever. It'll get boring.

Like I said, I'll eat just 'bout anything but... I guess my mom's cookin'. Not that she has to do it, you know but, uhm... stews an' soup an' steak. Stuff like that.

Country food I guess. Sure never did find much of that in th' city.

Sounds like stuff I like to make. I get fancy for the restaurant, but at home, I like to cook comfort food. It's fun.

[She shrugged a little, starting her work on the grilled cheese while the griddle heated up.]

Do you want anything extra on here? Bacon, tomatoes?

[ He perks up a bit at that. It would be so great with some home cooking that he didn't make for once... Lacus in all honor, but it wasn't quite right. ]

Bacon please, if it ain't too much trouble.

Sure. [It was a steakhouse. They had meat. She finished prepping for two sandwiches, got some good melty types of cheese (it had to be a little fancy, okay?) and put bacon on both and tomato slices on one. Then, on the griddle they went.]

I find it calms me down to do this. Like going back to basics or something.

I can see that. Heck, I'm th' same with plants... just weedin' or waterin' that any fool can do. 's nice. Kinda, uhm...

Kinda peaceful, I guess.

Yeah. It is.

[She gave him a small smile as she worked on the sandwiches.]

And, actually, I do like what I've been learning about the gardening over there. I don't overwater as much anymore... at least, not as much as I used to.

[Though, that was really only a thing she did when she got worried or upset about something.]

[ He makes an amused noise. ] See, that's th' kinda thing folks do wrong most of th' time. They're so scared they'll forget to water so they overdo it instead.

's a tricky thing, if you ain't used to it.

It's more that I just overwater when I have something on my mind, and it just water them on autopilot.

I think it helps that I don't have the garden actually in my place of residence at the moment. [She laughed a little sheepishly.

She plated up the sandwiches as they finished, and then handed him the one without the tomato.]

Here you go.

Heh, yeah... I suppose that would help! [ Meanwhile, he kind of misses having it so close by. The greenhouse in sector 2 was so good, but... he can't go back there. Never. Not unless Helix comes home. ]

Oh man, that looks really good! Thank you!

[She laughed a little at the idea that having it outside the house helped, and then gave him a smile.]

I'm glad you like it. [She had always wanted to make that kind of food for a child. And she knew she would have a daughter. Phoebe had foreseen it. But, the past year of her marriage had resulted in no pregnancy whatsoever, and it was disappointing. She smiled a little sadly.]

[ If he knew she thought of him as a child, he'd be stuck somewhere between comfort and embarrassment. 21 years old now, there's not all that much child left in him — not that you'd tell from the way he digs into that sandwich with boyish glee.

Of course, he soon realizes that something is up. ]

You okay?

[Not so much him as a child, but rather having a moment like this with her potential future child... and she startled a little at his question.]

Oh... yeah. I'm fine.

You?
