250 - Fear Itself Mingle
[ Today is a day where most would be at risk of oversleeping. The dome lies dark like in the dead of night. The sun hasn’t risen today, streetlights casting a dull yellow glow and occasionally flickering out into nothing, only to spark back to life a moment later. There is no electric flicker from the kiosk. The Wardens are still. The wardens are silent.

The dome isn’t silent. There is a rustling of leaves, a snapping of twigs. Claws, scraping against concrete. The inhuman screech of an animal in peril, an animal hunting, an animal hunted. A screech that promises sharp claws and sharper teeth and blood.

The dome isn’t still either. There is something moving, thick as a shadow, tangible as a chill down your spine. Something that doesn’t belong here, something that snuck in when no one was looking. A boogeyman under the bed. A ghost in the closet. A will o’ the wisp, blinking in and out of existence under the flickering streetlights. Whatever it is it’s moving, leaving a trail of cold, dead fear wherever it passes. Something dark. A shadow so pitch black that it blots out the very lights in your heart, dragging your fears out screaming and kicking, reducing even the strongest, toughest man to a blubbering baby.

Perhaps best to stay in bed today, Marina. ]

((OOC: Event information HERE. We ask the winners of the raffle to fill out a simple survey and then tag into the Vapor thread HERE! Happy mingling, Marinanites! ))

[He's petrified, and it's stupid, and he knows that but he can't move, can hardly breathe. His eyes - one organic, one mechanical - follow the slow slide of flesh as it peels away and splatters on the ground. He feels faintly sick and swallows dryly. He doesn't want to be here anymore, suddenly, desperately doesn't want to see what's under all that rotting flesh but all Ton can manage is a tiny step back that leaves him pinned against the wall behind him, trapped and terrified.]

[ The creature — for it is a creature — cranes its neck as if to smell him, a creak of metal shedding the last bits of false flesh to reveal a cranium that is most certainly human in nature. The eyes glow white like distant stars, hair a rats nest of wires that sway as if underwater. ]

[There's something about what he's watching that frightens him beyond the whole giant lizard thing falling apart with a person inside. Like he's just inches away from solving a puzzle he shouldn't.]

What?

[ There is a scraping — a screeching — and when the voice comes back it's closer to human than before. Still a raspy whisper, still breathing in when it shouldn't, emphasis on all the wrong syllables, but infinitely easier to understand. ]

Don't you think... this is better... Ton Phanan. [ The hair slithers, cords moving forward as if to touch his face without ever actually touching. ]

[He recoils from the wires and suddenly, abruptly it clicks into place at the sound of his name. And just like that the manufactured expression of self-appreciation and sarcasm he usually wears locked firmly in place is gone. He looks like a stranger without it, a different person staring out from the ruins of a face, hollow and wrecked and scared.]

This isn't funny.

But it's so replaceable. Bit by bit by bit by bit by bit... tick tock the mechanical heart... [ The tendrils twitch in time with the sing-song nature of the not-so-human voice, dancing with teasing motions close to his face. ]

Don't you want to be a tin man.

[Phanan doubles over, heaving and retching on the mess of nets and boxes at his feet. It doesn't matter that he's looking at a thing, at something that's not really him. It might as well be; he's already 20 percent there, and no matter how many times he says he's not going to let it happen they keep replacing pieces of him, keep cutting away little bits of humanity until he worries there won't be anything left. He decided a long time ago he didn't want to live to be something like the mess staring at him now.]

Are you... are you real? Really me or just a thing?

[ The creature doesn't move much, just twitches occasionally and soaks up the delicious fear that is practically dripping off him. Milks it for all it's worth. ]

What's the difference? How do you know... if anything's real? Are you?

[Phanan is still folded over, slumped back against the wall. What's left of his face is pale and slick with sweat. He's a mess of fear and dread and nausea.]

I haven't felt real in a long time.

[ Speaking of real, it doesn't take too long before the being starts to go blurry at the edges, tendrils dripping off in grains of sand before disappearing entirely. This pool of fear is quite the feast and once you've laid down your prey, there's no reason to chase it no more.

It ripples, grows shapeless and shifting. Feeds. ]

[Phanan watches numbly as the figure in front of him ripples and blurs. His left hand scratches unconsciously back and forth across his right forearm, at the visible seam between the artificial synthiflesh and his body until its raw. One of those nervous habits. And yeah, he's getting now that this is just some thing messing with him but he's always so close to this edge anyway, so near to tipping over it and feeling like this. He doesn't because he has other things to do, but he supposed that doesn't really apply here with no bad guys to blow up.]

What do you get out of all this?

[ The voice that answers is wavering and blurring just like the shape, dipping into masculine and feminine, young and old and everything in between. Like it can't be bothered with settling for just the one identity. ]

You taste... delicious.

I always assumed I'd be a bit bitter tasting.

[Its nothing like the usual effortless sarcasm. It feels forced and false and awkward, like a mask he can't be bothered to put on straight. The scratches on his arm are starting to bleed; there are older scars beneath them.]

Emotions. You feed on emotions. Bad ones. Am I getting close?

Lucky me. So you project the bad feelings, change to something we don't like and then its a fun cycle for you. [Figuring this sort of thing out is what he gets paid to do. It doesn't make him feel better or stop the fear and disgust with himself he's feeling. Everything still hurts.]

What next?

Nothing next... [ There's a wet noise, like a tongue licking or a throat contracting in a swallow. ] ...nothing...

[ And with that it withdraws, what's left of its shape rippling and dissipating into mist. Thank you for the meal. ]

Glad I could help.

[He watches it go then slides down the wall until he's sitting slumped against it, head tilted back, organic eye closed. The mechanical one never shuts even when he wants it to and it's eery red glow is the only illumination in his gloomy surroundings. He doesn't move until hours later, when the lights finally turn back on.]
