Day 222 — Mandatory activity mingle
[ It's a wonderful, stormy day here in Squall Asylum and vacation time is officially over! Your gracious overlords have worked out a light itinerary for you today and they expect you to keep it.

Get in line to pick up your food rations for the day. Eat breakfast if you have time for it, or perhaps you'd rather skip this one time and save yourself the discomfort during the two hours of exercise that follow. Jogging, jumping jacks or perhaps impromptu team sports, whatever you end up doing you bet you'll come out exercised in the end!

Should you not want to participate... well. We have ways to make you join in. Anyone reluctant to get their heart rate up will get a helpful electric prod by one of the bots until they comply. Tough cookies.

Luckily you'll get a chance to wash off that sweat (hope you're not shy, the wash room can get crowded) before it's time for the silent game for an hour, followed by lunch. The day is not over yet though! There's still time for a couple of hours of hard labor tending to the crops, doing laundry or perhaps breaking bricks in the yard. To make sure none of the inmates are broken this is also the time for mandatory physical checkups — bots will guide you to the hospital. No ifs or buts. The violation of personal privacy is for your own good, we promise.

Isn't it nice, being in prison? ]

((ooc: This mingle takes place during all of day 222. A bullet-point for of the itinerary can be found here, where we also encourage you to direct any questions. Event info is here if you need it. ))

[ she glances over at the man as he approaches, stretching out her tingling muscles, and offers a firm nod in response. ] Not the worse thing I've ever experienced. [ she's keeping her voice low for the moment, though. no need to give the bots or wardens any ideas. ] Certainly worth seeing what their idea of discipline is.

[ it'll give her an idea of how to help anyone else who experiences the same. ]

Taking one for the team.

How intense was it? [Since she's already had the shock then he can just learn from her experience.]

Something like that. [ it was part of the reason. a small part. ]

Not the worst jolt I've ever experienced, but certainly enough to give one a nice tingling feeling. I wouldn't recommend repeat performances. Once or twice shouldn't do too much damage. [ aka if you're going to rebel, pick your battles carefully. ]

[He might, but not for the sake of rebelling. He'll need to have a plan ready.] Good to know. [Stretch. Stretch. Keeping up appearances.]

I'm Sam by the way.

I thought it might be a good thing to pass on. [ he's welcome to pass the knowledge to anyone else he knows. she sees no reason to go into this blind.

she's doing likewise, not wanting a bot or two to come prod them. ]

Helen Magnus. Pleasure to meet you, even under the circumstances. [ and she gives him a warm, if brief, smile. ]

[He just might.] You too.

Have you been around long? [The best conversations are the ones you have while doing toe touches.]

[ oh totally. the absolute best. at least they can talk. she won't knock that. ]

Only a few days. Not exactly how I expected to spend my first week in prison. [ she pauses to give him a wry sort of smile. ] Yourself? You look far more accustomed to this than I am.

[It's true. It could always be worse. He's no stranger to "worse."]

Since Day 74. [Double digits!] Long enough.

What were you expecting?

Quite a long time. [ pause. ] I was hoping for a shorter time frame, but expecting about the same, if not a bit longer.

[ she's a bit of a realist most times. ] Admittedly, I'm still trying to decide what to expect here. "Fun" and "ideals" seem to be off the table.

I don't think I know anyone here from Day 1, [yes, he does actually, but that hasn't come up] but I know some people who are closer to it than me.

[He tries some slow jogging in place to break up his stretching routine.]

In this place? Probably. In Marina, I've seen fun happen. [Okay, maybe he has had fun.]

Seems like a simultaneously long and short amount of time. [ not even a year in her world, yet she can't really imagine being here that long. she has too much to do. ]

A good distinction to make. [ well, they could jog around. maybe. ] In any case, I suppose I'll find out that distinction for myself soon enough. [ she's just spent two days in each place so far. hardly enough time to get a feel for "normal." ]

Probably. It's not hard to fall into a routine. [Which starts making things feel "normal." A new version of it, but still a version.]

It's started becoming a community. People left together for a long time under stress. Helping and relying on each other when the dangerous and strange things happen and relaxing together when we get a chance. [It's almost like he's realizing this for himself as he tells her.]

If you've all been here long enough, I can imagine it would be. Better to have that sense of community and friendship than to be completely alone.

[ whether or not she believes this is up in the air, but it's nice to hear anyway. ]

I've seen this sort of thing happen several times.

When you say sort of thing you mean people bonding in adverse conditions or something actually like this with abductions and distant prisons? [Hey, anything is possible.]

The former. [ if she were to be honest, the latter would be a thing of her not-so-distant future and she knows it, but that's a can of worms she'd rather keep closed. ]

[He nods along with his calisthenics.] Common goals. Common enemies. It's a good way to get people working together. It'd be helpful if the enemy was a little more overthrowable. [But he's been up against satan, so it's not like he doesn't know impossible odds well. Granted, the battle with Lucifer wasn't over yet.

In my line of work, there's little reason to give up. I've always found there's a way to change things if you're willing to go through the hoops.

I agree. I've seen things that seem impossible even before I was here. I've just been here since the days were in double digits. [It wears down some of that hope after awhile.]

That seems to be unique. I haven't met many who could claim that. But it does offer an interesting insider's perspective. Not many would have memories of such a long time, both good and bad.

[ she spent nine months trapped inside a bubble of speeded up time. she understands what it's like to lose hope of escape and survival. ]

Oh, there are some people here who were around even longer. I guess that number's getting smaller though. [The strange part for Sam right now is that he feels like she gets it.]
