Day 222 — Mandatory activity mingle
[ It's a wonderful, stormy day here in Squall Asylum and vacation time is officially over! Your gracious overlords have worked out a light itinerary for you today and they expect you to keep it.

Get in line to pick up your food rations for the day. Eat breakfast if you have time for it, or perhaps you'd rather skip this one time and save yourself the discomfort during the two hours of exercise that follow. Jogging, jumping jacks or perhaps impromptu team sports, whatever you end up doing you bet you'll come out exercised in the end!

Should you not want to participate... well. We have ways to make you join in. Anyone reluctant to get their heart rate up will get a helpful electric prod by one of the bots until they comply. Tough cookies.

Luckily you'll get a chance to wash off that sweat (hope you're not shy, the wash room can get crowded) before it's time for the silent game for an hour, followed by lunch. The day is not over yet though! There's still time for a couple of hours of hard labor tending to the crops, doing laundry or perhaps breaking bricks in the yard. To make sure none of the inmates are broken this is also the time for mandatory physical checkups — bots will guide you to the hospital. No ifs or buts. The violation of personal privacy is for your own good, we promise.

Isn't it nice, being in prison? ]

[ it's the "yet" part of that statement that has her the most uneasy, but she takes his offer easily, settling herself on the sand close by him and leaning over the equation as though she's simply going to look over and correct it. ]

Then what are you doing? I can't imagine you're enjoying this as much as I am.

[ meaning neither of them is enjoying this new prison. it's not exactly a joyride for either of them. ]

[ what? he's being honest. nikola has an obsessive personality. does he really need to remind you of how lost to his obsessions he became while left to his own devices for sixty some odd years when he was pretending to still be dead to world? because that went well. at least he can somewhat admit to it now, begrudgingly so. ]

[ she does appreciate the honesty, regardless of how said honesty makes her nervous. she needs no reminder of how he changed during those sixty-or-so years. that was enough of a shock the first time. nowadays she might be less surprised to see a change in him, but it would disappoint her on a level she isn't sure she wants to address. she's gotten used to the man he is now and she likes him as he is. she would rather not have that change again. ]

[ he shoots her a look, one that's offended but not. she's agitated. more so than usual. which bothers the hell out of him, to be completely honest. usually she's the cool headed member of whatever group they happen to be in (when ashley isn't a factor, but her behavior during those events couldn't be counted amongst the constants), not him. ]

What, the lack of pointy things? [ teeth, claws... he shrugs. ] Not as bad as it could be. More annoying than anything else. I imagine I'd find more discomfort in it if I hadn't done this particular song and dance already. [ meaning he's gone through what it's like to have all those heighten senses demoted to human levels, knows how to cope with navigating around how dim the world feels. ]

Yes, but that was-- [ give her half a second to do the mental calculations. it hasn't been nearly as long for him as for her. ] --nearly half a year ago. [ may to october, if she's remembering correctly.

she does give him a bit of a look, though, and mutters something that could possibly sound like "pointy things." your descriptive abilities are perfection, nikola. ]

[ you bet he caught on to that pause, how she had to give herself time to calculate the span of time. he suspected he was out of alignment with her, but there's something more going on there... more than she's letting on or willing to tell him, no doubt. he doesn't bring it up, instead turning to her and lunging as if to strike -- but in the end, he just looks ridiculous with his mouth curled in a snarl with dull human teeth barred at her, fingers curled in without the claws to make him look more menacing.

he shrinks back, shrugs. ] See? Nothing. I'm declawed and defanged.

[ she knows nikola would never hurt her willingly and even though she doesn't outright flinch -- she's not the type to be afraid of attack when she could defend herself quite well -- she does twitch, as though to protect herself were it anyone else threatening her. ]

A feat both fascinating and concerning. Why would they do this? And how long will it last?
