Day 222 — Mandatory activity mingle
[ It's a wonderful, stormy day here in Squall Asylum and vacation time is officially over! Your gracious overlords have worked out a light itinerary for you today and they expect you to keep it.

Get in line to pick up your food rations for the day. Eat breakfast if you have time for it, or perhaps you'd rather skip this one time and save yourself the discomfort during the two hours of exercise that follow. Jogging, jumping jacks or perhaps impromptu team sports, whatever you end up doing you bet you'll come out exercised in the end!

Should you not want to participate... well. We have ways to make you join in. Anyone reluctant to get their heart rate up will get a helpful electric prod by one of the bots until they comply. Tough cookies.

Luckily you'll get a chance to wash off that sweat (hope you're not shy, the wash room can get crowded) before it's time for the silent game for an hour, followed by lunch. The day is not over yet though! There's still time for a couple of hours of hard labor tending to the crops, doing laundry or perhaps breaking bricks in the yard. To make sure none of the inmates are broken this is also the time for mandatory physical checkups — bots will guide you to the hospital. No ifs or buts. The violation of personal privacy is for your own good, we promise.

Isn't it nice, being in prison? ]

((ooc: This mingle takes place during all of day 222. A bullet-point for of the itinerary can be found here, where we also encourage you to direct any questions. Event info is here if you need it. ))

[ seven enjoys this facility even less than the previous one, and while enduring imprisonment in squall is making her appreciate marinanova in ways she didn't before, it doesn't make the experience any less grueling. her borg systems are malfunctioning, limiting the sight in her left eye and rendering the collective's assimilated knowledge completely inaccessible. her more heavily augmented arm is stiff, and she's forced to regenerate within the confines of the hospital, away from data and captain picard. at least back in marinanova, she'd been allowed to place her alcove within one of the rooms of the apartment she shared with them. as much as she misses the solitude of cargo bay two, she would much rather regenerate amongst the people packed into those overcrowded rooms than by herself in squall's rather disturbing medical facility.

they give her food anyway, despite the fact that she doesn't need to consume it, per say. her digestive system may be functional, but she obtains the energy she needs to sustain herself from her regeneration cycles, not what she ingests. she sits across from magnus for no reason other than it being a empty seat. should she locate captain picard, data, penelope, or xander, she'll rise from the spot and move to where they are at, but for now, she's staring blankly down at her plate before the good doctor. ]

These meals possess little nutritional value. [ starting conversations: she's bad at it. ]

[ that medical facility is what's giving helen even more incentive to start her own clinic. these wardens and their ideas of "help" and "hospitals" were giving her an absolutely horrible feeling and if she didn't like it, she couldn't imagine anyone else would.

she wouldn't pay much attention to anyone around her if she weren't on the look-out for her own acquaintances. however, the sight of the woman who sits down opposite her is enough to garner her attention. this person looks like she's just stepped out of a science-fiction world, pieces of metal around her face and hand. it isn't frightening by any means -- helen doesn't frighten easily, after all -- but the sight is quite interesting.

helen doesn't ask, though, preferring to reach that topic in a less blunt way. ]

Indeed. If I didn't know better, I might believe these new wardens desire only to give us exactly as much as we need to survive. Nothing more, nothing less. [ as a doctor, she finds this absolutely atrocious. ] They seem to care little for our well-being at any rate.

[ while seven is quite used to medical facilities run by an artificial lifeform, given her ship's EMH, after this dome, she would be more comfortable dealing with a doctor that wasn't an archaic robot with a bedside manner that made ensign paris look like an exemplary physician. as it is, she's accustomed to both her human physiology and her borg systems being monitored simultaneously, and while she's capable of doing both herself, thus far she's only had assistance with the latter and data's understanding of her augmentations. ]

Yet they give that which is not needed to those who do not necessarily need to eat. [ like herself and data. she could understand receiving food to a degree, given she could eat if she wanted to, she just didn't need to, per say; but data was an android. ]

Do they?

[ that's interesting and the woman receives a quick glance-over from helen. fascinating. helen wonders, for a moment, if this woman is fully human or if she's part-human and part-something else. what that something else might be is uncertain at the moment. perhaps she's simply a human abnormal. either way, helen is quite interested now. ]

I admit I know very little about any of these prisons to know to whom they might give something that isn't necessary. Regardless... their version of "necessary" doesn't seem to coincide with my own. [ or anyone she's yet seen. ]

The Borg have encountered numerous species who treat their prisoners with comfortable accommodations. [ she knows this, but without access to those databanks in her cortical array containing all that assimilated information, she is unable to provide helen with proper species designations, planet names, etc. ] Squall has more traditional approach to the treatment of prisoners.

[ as for the food and her earlier question... seven pushes the plate to one side, uninterested. ] Consumption of food is unnecessary.

[ well that's new. ] The Borg? [ the name of this woman's species, perhaps? excuse her for a minute, seven. curiosity is winning out over tact. ] Indeed it would seem so. Not the most pleasant of experiences.

[ she pauses for a moment, her mind working overtime. if she could take that plate and hide the contents somewhere, perhaps her room, she could offer it to someone more in need of food than either woman seems to be. if it could help someone else... ]

This may be a strange request, but if you aren't going to eat that, I wonder if it might be possible to save it for someone who does?

A cybernetic race from the Delta Quadrant. I, myself, am a Borg-Human Hybrid. [ sort of. it is easier to label herself a simple hybrid than to constantly recount details to strangers about her assimilation, loss of self, and determination to reclaim her humanity. better they label her as weird for alien reasons than to be aware of the true bredth of how traumatized and out of touch with humanity she is. ] The Borg are renown for the vast amount of knowledge they have acquired during their existence. [ also for destroying worlds, but she has found conversation is better when kept positive. ]

Yes. [ not strange at all. and seven hands over the plate, as if she assumes this woman was making it for herself. ]

[ a cybernetic race? oh that opens up so many questions. helen's eyes take in the woman before her once again, very quickly, though she shows no signs of acknowledging that this woman is anything but human. ]

I would assume being even part Borg means you have access to that knowledge as well.

[ either by genetics or simply having that knowledge passed down through borg culture.

as for the food, helen takes it with a murmured "thank you" and combines it with the half of her own she hasn't managed to finish and likely won't. ]
Seeing as this was yours as well, if you'd like to help to me look for someone who needs it more than we do, I certainly won't turn it down.

Under normal circumstances, yes, but I am presently unable to access the information contained within my cortical array. My knowledge and experiences are my own, not the Collective's.

[ clearly, this perturbs her. she doesn't enjoy not being able to flip through endless amounts of information -- it's really all she's ever known. ]

I will assist you. My captain would encourage me to do so. [ she rises from her seat, intent on doing just that. (and whether she means janeway or picard at this point is really up in the air.) ]

Part of the "power drain" I've heard?

[ she's filing it under the heading for "super-ability" rather than whatever it might actually be. and helen would understand feeling lost without something one has known for most of their life. it makes her wonder if this "power drain" affects her longevity or not.

nodding, helen gathers the plate and rises as well. ]
Then your captain has good taste. [ and she approves, despite not knowing that seven knows picard. ] Shall we?

[ even if they don't find anyone in any short amount of time, they'll at least have a decent walk before their other activities are demanded. ]

Yes. I am malfunctioning.

[ and handling it fairly well, all things considering. if not for the stability picard and data provide her with, seven might've been spiraling towards a meltdown. ]

They do. [ janeway and picard this time, for she has a great deal of respect for both captains. though truth be told, she's more likely to go head to head with janeway over an issue she disagrees with than picard. this may or may not have something to do with the experiences of his retained by the collective and understanding, to a degree, how the enterprise's captain things. that, and he was borg. like her. that is something janeway can never truly understand. (especially not with the way she would go on to experience it.)

she nods and follows, hands clasped behind her back, posture perfect despite the ache in her shoulders. ]

[ that seven chose to use the world "malfunctioning" tells helen a great deal, possibly more than the woman wants to offer. it suggests that there's a lot more machinery involved than helen had originally thought. how interesting. ]

Then I hope this won't last long.

[ the "they" is also telling. one captain, two, perhaps multiples. either way, this woman thinks highly of them and helen will be interested in meeting them, if they're in the prison system. ]

In all of our time talking, I don't believe we've exchanged introductions. My name is Dr. Helen Magnus.

Seven of Nine. [ she refrains from handing out her full designation. it is no longer customary and hasn't been since captain janeway liberated her from the collective. ]

It's a pleasure to meet you, Seven of Nine, despite the circumstances.

[ if she's weirded out by the title, she doesn't show it. she's known stranger, after all. ]
