Day 222 — Mandatory activity mingle
[ It's a wonderful, stormy day here in Squall Asylum and vacation time is officially over! Your gracious overlords have worked out a light itinerary for you today and they expect you to keep it.

Get in line to pick up your food rations for the day. Eat breakfast if you have time for it, or perhaps you'd rather skip this one time and save yourself the discomfort during the two hours of exercise that follow. Jogging, jumping jacks or perhaps impromptu team sports, whatever you end up doing you bet you'll come out exercised in the end!

Should you not want to participate... well. We have ways to make you join in. Anyone reluctant to get their heart rate up will get a helpful electric prod by one of the bots until they comply. Tough cookies.

Luckily you'll get a chance to wash off that sweat (hope you're not shy, the wash room can get crowded) before it's time for the silent game for an hour, followed by lunch. The day is not over yet though! There's still time for a couple of hours of hard labor tending to the crops, doing laundry or perhaps breaking bricks in the yard. To make sure none of the inmates are broken this is also the time for mandatory physical checkups — bots will guide you to the hospital. No ifs or buts. The violation of personal privacy is for your own good, we promise.

Isn't it nice, being in prison? ]

((ooc: This mingle takes place during all of day 222. A bullet-point for of the itinerary can be found here, where we also encourage you to direct any questions. Event info is here if you need it. ))

[ nikola opting out of both breakfast and participating in this ridiculous mandatory exercise nonsense wasn't surprising. he wasn't a crowds person or athletic by any means not (secretly) vampiric in nature. what was surprising, was how that shock those bots gave him had actually hurt. so much that he deliberately put himself in the position to receive another jolt, just to see if the pain was real or imagined. it's been well over a century since electricity of any kind has caused pain instead of a mild, comforting tingling sensation (if anything at all). there was a time when he'd fallen asleep out of boredom and disenchantment with edison's electric chair — while sitting in the damned thing! and now a simple little electrical prod, something that shouldn't even be a blip on his radar, stings. hell, it smarts.

(no pun intended.)

he wants out. screw this place. forget the well timed vacation from a directionless point in his life. this was not acceptable. ]

And the clock struck thirteen... [ thus his free period was spent drawing equations in the sand and making 1984 references. ]

[ Dirk didn't know this guy, but he'd noticed him trying to opt out of the mandatory exercises, and appreciated the vicarious warning he'd provided.

It's only by chance that he happens to wander by him during the free period and overhear him. ]

This look like a bright, cold day in April to you, bro?

[ he doesn't answer for a moment, adding on to the equations he's written in the sand.

whether he's doing this as a means of working out a solution to something new dome related or just dabbling as a means of giving himself something faux worthwhile to do is yet to be seen. ]

Might as well be. Certainly Orwellian enough.

[ Yeah Dirk has no idea what any of those scribbles mean. He stares for a second, trying to decipher them, before realizing that they're math symbols and not words, then rubs at his eyes. He's pretty tired. ]

Hey, at least we've got our opinions. For now.

Yes, well, only time will tell how long we're allowed to keep those. Big Brother may demand mandatory conformance come tomorrow morning.

[ That doesn't even sound that outlandish.

Even Dirk's oft-repeated mantra of I need to find some way out of this shithole is starting to sound pretty worn-out to him, though. ]

So what's with the math? Tryin' to remind yourself that two and two don't equal five?

[ a way out is precisely what nikola's trying to do. and yes, that involves math. quantum theory is a messy, complicated matter. while the likes of adam worth might've been okay with tampering with time, he wasn't as okay with with dabbling in that are of science as his eccentricity (no pun intended) may lead people to believe.

the look he gives the boy is one of annoyance. of course he's not recognized. he should really be used to this by now... ]

I'm a physicist and this is basic building blocks of quantum theory. You do the math. [ pun totally intended. ]

Fan of Schrödinger, are we?

[ impressive. nikola's not as accustomed to bright, young up-and-comings recognizing complicated physics equations as one would think. he doesn't mingle with the crowds he used to. being "dead" will do that. ]

[ he clucks his tongue in mock disapproval. with anyone else, that would've been in honest distaste, but with someone who actually recognized what he was working out in the sand? well, no harm in dropping the walls a little. just a little. ]

I happen to like cats. Much cleaner animals than dogs. [ and yet he also likes pigeons, who are practically sky rats. nikola tesla, walking contradiction since 1856. ]

[Peter shrugs and crouches down next to Nikola.]

I wouldn't really know. No pets at home. I've always thought spiders were cool though.

[Peter is just barely holding himself together, itching to reach out and add to the equation that Tesla is working on, but he's pretty sure that's not only disrespectful but rude.]

I kind of feel like that now. Like we're hovering in that place where anything can be. I mean they say time--time stands still back home or---or moves differently and we're sealed up inside that box---I know there wasn't a literal box. I mean...I'm not--I'm not stupid or anything it's just...ho-how I feel.

I had a cat when I was a child back in Smiljan. Haven't had any since. [ because the pigeons and the things helen keeps locked up in the shoe don't really count. ]

Slow down before you hurt yourself there, sonny. [ nikola even reaches out to pat peter semi-condescendingly on the arm. it's his way. ask will or henry and they'll confirm that tesla's just being tesla. (only helen could disagree with that, as she alone john never counts remembers him before history made him bitter.) ]

[ she's in rather a mood herself when she finally runs across him during their free period. the sand equations are given a half glance, but what she's really interested in is nikola himself. ]

That isn't usually a good thing. [ meaning the clock striking thirteen. the equations could go either way, depending on what he's thinking of.

for the moment, she doesn't comment on how he's feeling, hoping not to need to. perhaps he can tell her how he's doing without her needing to worry about it, but she isn't holding her breath. she isn't liking anything about these two days they're spending under this dome -- and who really knows how long it'll be.

she folds her arms over her chest as she finally examines the writing in the sand. she wants out. ]

Relax, I'm not obsessing. [ he brushes away part of the equation, replacing it with something else. ] Not yet, anyway.

[ nikola pats the spot in the sand next to him, indicating that she should sit if she wishes to have a proper conversation that doesn't involve people overhearing things they may or may not speak of that they mutually wish for other sets of ears not to overhear. ]

[ it's the "yet" part of that statement that has her the most uneasy, but she takes his offer easily, settling herself on the sand close by him and leaning over the equation as though she's simply going to look over and correct it. ]

Then what are you doing? I can't imagine you're enjoying this as much as I am.

[ what? he's being honest. nikola has an obsessive personality. does he really need to remind you of how lost to his obsessions he became while left to his own devices for sixty some odd years when he was pretending to still be dead to world? because that went well. at least he can somewhat admit to it now, begrudgingly so. ]

Do I need a reason to do quantum physics in the sand? [ he adds in a few more lines of numbers and symbols.

dropping his voice to a whisper, he confirms ]
No. I don't. In fact, I rather hate it. I'm finally restored to my former glory, and this happens — and without the magnetic consolation prize.

[ she does appreciate the honesty, regardless of how said honesty makes her nervous. she needs no reminder of how he changed during those sixty-or-so years. that was enough of a shock the first time. nowadays she might be less surprised to see a change in him, but it would disappoint her on a level she isn't sure she wants to address. she's gotten used to the man he is now and she likes him as he is. she would rather not have that change again. ]

Knowing you? Yes. [ it's a good enough cover conversation for their real topic.

[ he shoots her a look, one that's offended but not. she's agitated. more so than usual. which bothers the hell out of him, to be completely honest. usually she's the cool headed member of whatever group they happen to be in (when ashley isn't a factor, but her behavior during those events couldn't be counted amongst the constants), not him. ]

What, the lack of pointy things? [ teeth, claws... he shrugs. ] Not as bad as it could be. More annoying than anything else. I imagine I'd find more discomfort in it if I hadn't done this particular song and dance already. [ meaning he's gone through what it's like to have all those heighten senses demoted to human levels, knows how to cope with navigating around how dim the world feels. ]

Paradoxial parallels. I may not have always seen eye to eye with Albert and Erwin, but they were certainly on to something. Of course, I never had a reason to dabble in this particular area until now. And it wasn't that I couldn't, it was that I wouldn't. That sort of tampering is better left to those who are reckless enough to accept the consequences of their actions on such a grand scale.

Of course. How else can the cross of varying timelines, worlds, and dimensions make sense here? Without that, this place couldn't exist -- and if it did, even for a fraction of a second, it would implode on itself.
