[Day 217] [Video|Action|Open] [Movie Marathon!]
[It's a rainy day, but Richie is in a good mood because kung fu movies at the theater. Best kind of way to spend the day. But it's not as fun doing it alone when you can do it with friends or random strangers. Especially when it's the kind of movies you can laugh about because they're so terrible they're great. It's early afternoon and he's loitering a bit in the lobby before getting on the network.]

It's dreary outside, but that doesn't mean we can't do something fun, right? If they're going to show kung fu flix, we should be taking advantage of it. Watching classic kung fu with the terrible voice overs is almost as fun as watching cheesy horror movies. Anybody want to join me? We can make a marathon of it. Ko, bro, you should definitely swing by.

If you get here soon you'll catch the big end fight of The Booming Insect, and you won't miss the beginning of Master of Swinging Death Trap.

{OOC: Come on and all to the movie mingle! These two movies shown above and these other three are the ones Richie will be watching. Anyone is welcome to join and mingle amongst themselves. If you want to speak to Richie direct just tag action or video on the thread I'm including below.}

[Richie nods along.] I'm usually into sci-fi and b-rate horror, but kung fu's got a draw all its own. Especially when you get the only stuff and not the new remakes with all the weird special effects. Just ain't the same.

Point. As technology marched on, the allure of shiny special effects drowned out the need for solid storytelling and acting. [ A shrug. ] Although the acting in the older stuff wasn't that great either.

It wasn't about the acting, it was about the good ol' entertainment. A lot of the new stuff is more about wowing us into liking it more than putting effort into the entertainment. You'd think that cool special effects would be entertainment enough, right?

You make a good point, but mindless entertainment isn't something I've ever been much in favor of. Even if it's accomplished all on its own without the aid of computers.

True, but mindless can be fun. Me? I'll take an unrealistic cheesy fight movie over one that acts like it's getting it right when it's totally wacked any day.

[Especially when the ones acting like they get it right are so riddled with flaws that Richie wants to write new theories of physics just to prove how wrong they are.]

What kind of movies are you usually into?

I prefer higher-end films. Old classics, stuff with decent plots, or barring that, lots of symbolism.

So you're the Indie type who's into the message and the artistic effort? Cool. A friend of mine back home loves stuff like that. She used to drag anyone she could get to agree to watch 'em with her.

[Frieda had a way of dragging people to do a lot of things. She had that kind of personality.]

[ ...when Richie puts it that way, Dirk sounds kind of like a hipster. Crap. ]

Anyway. When's the next one starting? I should find Jake.

[Not like Richie has a problem with it. As long as he isn't ragging on the stuff Richie likes Dirk can like whatever he wants. Fair's fair. He doesn't even know what a hipster is. He looks down at his watch.]

Probably starting up in about ten minutes at the most. Jake the guy who convinced you to come along? [Since this isn't Dirk's usual thing.]

[ He takes a sip of his refilled soda. ]

Yeah. His concept of human interaction is pretty warped, if you ask me. These are not the kind of movies you take a date to.

[Well, Richie can definitely say that he didn't expect that to come out during this conversation. But...hey, it's none of his business. There's a noticeable pause, but he gives a bit of a crooked grin.] So were you expecting a horror movie?

More like a romantic comedy.

[ A pause just long enough to be noticeable. ]

...you know what? Now that I think about it, I don't have anything to complain about.

[Okay that makes Richie laugh. He decides to tease just a bit.] You never know. One of these might have a love story subplot. Not that most martial art movies do, but hey, it was the 70s, almost anything was possible.

I wouldn't be surprised. Martial arts guy has to save his helpless kidnapped girlfriend was actually a not-uncommon trope in the genre.

Then it turned into "avenge the death of dead girlfriend." Or "fall in love with the daughter of the enemy." Gotta fit it in somehow.

Plotlines as romantic and hackneyed as shit.

[He laughs.] They're movies about guys who punch each other through walls and snap each other's limbs to prove how tough they are. Anything more romantic than that and they probably would have lost their audience.
