Smithers, a curly-haired second year, and Severus, in old-fashioned but clean robes, made an adorable couple. They were the only male-male pair, but two sets of girls defied the whispers as well. Remus watched as long as he could, wondering all the while how his life would have played out if he'd been able to date a boy instead of a girl.
Minerva handed him a cup of thick, spicy bisque in a tureen shaped like a miniature pumpkin. "You barely picked at dinner."
Remus took a bite. "Thank you."
Her eyes were shadowed. "I'm sorry, Remus."
"So am I."
