Lupin nearly dumped wine on his toes. "What? What? You mean you didn't love Lily?"
"Of course I did. She was the only friend I had for most of my childhood." Snape gulped down the rest of his wine. "Insulting her was a terrible mistake.
"But romantic love? No." He shook his head. "No more than you truly loved Nymphadora. I've never had such feelings for a woman."
The fire crackled. Lupin, anger gone, spoke softly. "That's sad. Everyone should have a - a - "
"I said 'woman,' you dunderhead." Snape fluttered his lashes. "Men, on the other hand…."
