Sam had spent a good part of his time in Lincoln River in bed. Sleep didn't come easy for him, but he'd pushed too hard that first day, after he'd arrived, and his head had hurt worse than he ever remembered. He thought he must have had a real headache, on top of the aggravation he got from having visions of Lucifer, and the struggle to keep track of reality when Lucifer's visions tried to confuse him.
He knew what was happening. He knew the wall DEATH had put in his mind was failing, what he didn't know was why. DEATH wasn't a small time player, he was one of the Big Bads. He'd gone into hell and he'd taken Sam's soul back from Lucifer himself, and Sam could only imagine that wasn't an easy task. But DEATH had done it and he'd constructed a wall inside Sam's mind to keep his mind from remembering his time in the pit. Sam could think of nothing that could defeat DEATH's handiwork, unless DEATH himself had made cracks in the foundation, and that was not a thought Sam wanted to entertain.
Lucifer haunted him, day and night. Awake or asleep, it didn't matter. Lucifer seemed to travel with Sam where ever he went, he was always right there. Keeping step behind, or sitting across from Sam at a table, chattering incessantly, begging Sam to pay attention, Talk to me, Sammy, it's been months! Sam tried to pretend he didn't notice, but he couldn't miss it, and at the end of the day he didn't know if he was going crazy or not, but it wasn't a good feeling.
Lydia had certainly helped. She'd been an angel, whether or not she really was a celestial being. She'd found him the day he'd arrived, she'd brought him aspirin and water, she'd gotten him inside. Without her interference, he might still be sitting outside. Now Cas was here too, and the two of them were coming to meet up at Sam's place. Sam was glad he didn't have to go anywhere. He wasn't sure he was ready to leave the house.
