Mommy knows best
WHO: Blair & Orion
WHERE: Supermarket
WHEN: Late afternoon
Blair didn't watch the news. The fact that there was a crisis at the school was lost on Blair. She'd heard about it from Fiona but Blair hadn't really thought any more about it than that. Men took care of such things. Women kept the rest of the world running while men fixed its problems. She'd simply sort of left the house a little after lunch. Blair had done it somewhat subversively, as if she would get in trouble for it. Fact was, Fiona had not really expected Blair to just hang around the house for her whole visit. Blair thought otherwise. After all, how could she fix her sister's marriage if she didn't watch the whole time? Although with Bruce gone, she didn't have much opportunity to observe and counsel.
Blair had gotten her nails done and a little snack at a coffee shop and was now on her way to the supermarket. Which, of course, was completely unnecessary as Fiona had gone shopping just a couple days ago. But Blair felt comfortable in a supermarket setting. It made sense to her. Her phone rang just outside the supermarket and she bumped into someone as she fished through her purse. She muttered an apology as she looked at her phone. Well, she supposed the girls would be out of school by now. "Hello?"
It was Neal. Blair tried not to sigh. Mairi's school was going to have a Sadie Hawkins dance in November and Mairi had finally brought home the form. Could Mairi go? Blair pinched the area between her eyes with her free hand. "Put Mairi on the phone."
Blair finally sighed as the phone switched hands. "No."
"Yes, Mother," Mairi complied without an issue. Blair had done something right with her first daughter, at least. She doubted Fiona would be this easy when the time came. But that's what she got for naming her daughter after her sister. And, then, in the background, her middle daughter piped up. But you HAVE to go. What about Daniel?
That got Blair's heart pounding. "Put your father back on the line, please." Mom probably heard you. Look what you've done! came Mairi's whining in the background. Blair bit her lower lip. She didn't want to cause the kind of resentment that existed between her and Fiona, but it couldn't be helped if her daughter was adamant to follow her namesake.
"...their college funds." Blair blinked. Wait. How long had Neal been talking? And about what?
"College funds," Blair repeated blandly. "Whatever you'd like, Neal. Although I still don't know if that's necessary. Perhaps you would like a boat to go fishing in instead?"
That's what Blair's father had done. She hadn't gone to college. She'd become a wife and a mother. Declan had gotten money for college, she assumed. But she didn't have boys.
"...I don't fish, you know that," Neal was talking again. Did...he sound hurt? "I have to fix dinner for the girls. I love you."
There was a pregnant pause. "Give my love to the girls." Blair hung up first. "College funds. For girls," she muttered under her breath. "What do they need higher education for, Neal? God, you're such a..." Blair stopped mid-sentence as she bit her lip. She wasn't sure what was covered under her marriage contract, but she didn't want to find out in the middle of Michigan where they couldn't fix her if something actually were to happen. Her hand shook.
