WHO: Maddie and April
WHEN: March 12, 2020; mid-afternoon
WHERE: Rec room
WHAT: Hanging out. Trying to like each other. XD
RATING: Low/medium.
Maddie still felt insanely guilty for what happened to Nick. The dare had been made out of spite, a way to take the focus off herself and the painting Ledger had given her. Looking back on it now, she wasn't sure why having a three-year-old friend was so embarrassing. In some ways, it still was and she was still awkward around kids, but all of her friends seemed to be playing with little kids these days. Caitie was doing puppet things for daycare, Luke was doing babysitting things and volunteering for games of laser tag with little kids, and George had that niece thing she'd been hanging out with. She'd subconsciously jumped on the bandwagon of having a pint-sized companion, yet her loathing for Nick had spurred her into giving the challenge to lessen her own personal embarrassment. For that selfish act, Nick paid the price. And Maddie hated herself for it. It didn't matter that it was only a sprained wrist. It could've been much, much worse. Like her own encounter with the Smasher all those months ago. It occurred to her that she hadn't really left the compound in a while. The last time had been with Zach, but it was a quick trip to grab something for DJ's birthday – which they'd forgotten about. For the first time in a while, though, Maddie was erring on the side of caution and not risking a poke at the lion (or zombie, whatever). Maybe she'd take a trip into town later in the week. Just to get out for a while. She wouldn't go alone, though. Probably not, anyway. Or maybe she would. Sort of a fitting punishment for what she'd made Nick do. The guilt she felt had her hiding out in the rec room. Apart from Nick (whenever the girl wanted her to do something) and Caitie (mostly because they were roommates), Maddie hadn't really socialized within the past few days. It didn't escape her notice that this was the exact same thing DJ did whenever his moods acted up. Maddie didn't usually put stock in the whole hiding thing, but... the heavy weight of guilt made her avoidy. Darts was a game she didn't play often. It was funny; she could kick ass at laser tag, but put a tiny dart in her hand and tell her to throw it at a round circle and her aim betrayed her. Maybe she just wasn't as interested in darts, though. Sighing when she'd tossed all the darts, Maddie scooted off the table she was sitting on to retrieve them. For the moment, she was alone, but people had been coming and going for the past few hours, so when she heard footsteps coming down the hall – awkward footsteps that sounded kind of like a drunken one-legged pirate – she didn't bother to glance at the door. |
