Was that the only similarity? Maddie wondered. “Very depressing.” If nothing else, the conversation did give her a bit of insight and completely dispelled what she'd previously thought of DJ's comment about maintaining a certain appearance for his 'person.' April wasn't trying to change him. That didn't completely sell that relationship to Maddie, but it was a step away from resentment. “Which is weird because normally I like change.” The words were spoken as she indicated her hair.
“If you want to call it that,” she responded with a shrug. “I prefer to call it skilled.”
Maddie flashed a brief grin. “I could, but where would be the fun in that? Mysteries are cool. Besides, I figure if something's really worth knowing, someone wouldn't send that info out in a stupid memo. You being blind apparently isn't important enough to get a big announcement.”
“All the professional dart people do it,” she explained, the faux serious tone ruined by the chuckle in her voice. Dart people. Technical term. “I think it's a rooting-for-the-underdog thing. People root for the chick who's losing, then cheer even louder for her when she wins. Psychological... psychicness.” Or something to that effect.
April asked the important question of scoring and Maddie's arms dropped to her side. “Not really,” she admitted. “Something about starting at negative zero and going up, but that doesn't make any sense to me.”
