WHO: Rae and Silas
WHAT: Devastation when the rescue mission returns empty-handed. Followed by more awkwardness.
WHERE: The walk to Rae's room, then Silas' room.
WHEN: 11/27/19, afternoon.
RATING: Medium, because Silas' mouth. And maybe a little of Rae's too. :|
This kept happening. The trip had yielded devastating results—they'd found signs that David had been there, the green Dodge that they'd taken, and his jacket hanging from a tree near it. But the most devastating of all the signs they'd found was the body of Eric Llewellyn, a few hundred feet away from the truck. He hadn't been bitten; his whole body was still intact, but he'd been shot in the back. And from the footprints in the mud, it looked like he'd been trying to run away. The infected hadn't gotten the group, or at least not all of it, but this was a harsh reminder that the infected weren't the only things they had to worry about anymore. And one of the hardest things she'd had to do was watch Evan physically drag Eloise away from the woods. She remembered being there. Not wanting to give up, but knowing that she had to. It made the emotion bubble that much closer to the surface, but she forced herself to keep it down for now. This wasn't the time to come unglued. Not when they were still vulnerable. Rae had been quiet the whole ride home, staring blankly out the window at nothing in particular as the truck made its way through unfamiliar Bedford and back to Ossining. Everyone she loved was taken away from her. It made her wonder why she kept trying to allow herself to get close to people. Topher had told her that he didn't believe in people being jinxes, but the evidence... it kept piling up against her. When they returned to the compound, it was noon. A little earlier than planned, but they'd spent the whole night looking and found nothing but more foreboding signs. Now, not only would EJ not have his father, but he wouldn't have his uncle, either. As she stepped out of the truck, she turned her attention to look at Silas, tears lining her eyes. But she refused to let them fall just yet. She couldn't. “Will you...” she wanted to ask him to walk home with her, but she figured that he was tired, too. That he probably needed to go home and rest. “I, um... you probably want to get home, don't you?” she asked rhetorically. “Th-thanks for coming with me.” She looked up at him, eyes shining. |
