Beltane, or May Day, as it was called by some was a time of celebration. It was the beginning of spring and a time to celebrate being blessed with health and fertility. The Ministry of Magic had decided that they were going to support the celebration. Most of the departments came together to form a plan for the public celebration. While the event was Ministry sponsored, there was no one but a few Aurors on duty on shifts at the venue during the celebration. This was a time of celebration, a time for the wizards and witches to let lose and have freedom, not to be policed and monitored as if they were doing something wrong. Instead, there was an air of freedom and fun that was infused in the atmosphere of the venue.
The venue was a large mansion on the outskirts of London that had a generous field behind it. The celebration was separated into two parts. One part of the festival was hosted inside the mansion in a large ballroom. That part was more of a ball. There was soft classic music playing with the room nearly empty of furniture. Tables of food and some tables for those who wanted to eat or rest from the ballroom dancing were lined up against the wall while the rest of the spacious room was reserved for dancing. Inside the dress code was rather strict with formal wear required. The food that was offered was finger food with small sandwiches, cakes, and crusty bread for the season while wine and champagne of all types. Waiters and waitresses mingled in the crowd with the offer of alcohol.
Outside the crowd who celebrated beneath the night sky was a different story. There were several bonfires lit amongst the field, spaced out periodic. As well, there were maypoles sent up with ribbon hanging from the top for those who wanted to could dance around in celebration and festivity. Both profession fire dancers and those partygoers who wanted to try the sport out for the night were playing and dancing with fire, casting eerie shadows and lights on the ground and crowd. The food and drink that was offered outside was a bit more substantial. Drink of all kinds, both alcoholic and nonalcoholic, were offered outside to the celebrating crowd; fresh fruit, sweet cakes, and pastries were piled on tables. The dress code was lax with no need to continue the formal wear. Revelers were seen barefoot or without cloaks, coats, or outerwear. The noise was ruckus and loud with music blasting from nowhere, enveloping the partygoers with the constant need to yell to be heard.
