Oriana usually didn't linger once the last bell at school had sounded. But between getting her things from her locker and checking up on things regarding softball, she found herself missing the bus home. So she wasn't in any hurry as she walked home from school. She ended up taking the scenic route and heading through the park. There wasn't anyone around. It was nice, to just take the time to walk outside and enjoy the fresh air. Even if it was COLD AS ANYTHING. She was longing for springtime when she could start up with softball and get out and not be cooped up in the house going stir-crazy because it was so cold outside. Her hands were stuffed in her pockets and she was thinking about how frustrated she was with the snow. Because the amount of it? Was outrageous.
"Stupid snow..." she grumbled to herself. Crunching her way through the snow in the path was a pain and it was enough to grate at her patience. Whatever good feeling she'd been getting from being out in the fresh air was slowly slipping away as she looked more and more forward to going home, drinking some hot chocolate and curling up with a blanket. Or something.
She was just about out of the park and on her way home. Of course, the snow made it slow going, but that was to be expected. She was still incredibly frustrated with the cold and the snow and she gave a rather loud exasperated groan. And that was when it happened.
Completely out of nowhere, she heard a huge crack and something that sounded like crackling and popping. Ori looked back for only a split second. And that was long enough to see the bright light and jagged shape of a lightning bolt. A lightning bolt. She fell back into the snow, looking at the tree that was now missing a branch. It was smoking and it was blackened from the electricity. But how in the world had lightning showed up in January?!
With her eyes still wide with shock and with her heart pumping, Ori backed away a bit before trying to get herself up. And with that, she got the heck out of there and started toward home, picking up the pace despite the snow. When she got in the door, she was still breathing heavy, trying to figure out if she was going crazy or if she'd really just almost been struck by lightning.
"...what the hell..." she breathed, dropping her backpack by the door.
