It was indeed a celebration fit for the gods. Gotham Hall's Grand Ballroom was a palatial venue, built to accommodate hundreds, and walking through the great brass doors one's eyes were immediately drawn upwards to the gilded ceiling dome and the enormous stained-glass skylight that formed its centrepiece. No doubt it would need to be seen during the daytime, when the sun's glow would bring to life the multi-coloured patterns in the glass, to get the full effect - that would surely be a sight to see. Still, there was something enchanting about the way the light from the great chandelier played across the golden ceiling, making it seem as though the dome glowed with a light of its own.
Each of the circular tables was set with centrepieces of elegantly-arranged Christmas lilies, along with bottles of champagne. Dinner would not be served until seven, but you could be sure that the meals were of the best gourmet quality - Pheme had spared no expense on tonight. For where gods gathered in their numbers there would always be scandal and intrigue, and scandal and intrigue were Pheme's bread and butter. And the best part was, all she had to do now was stand back and let it happen. The guests were already rolling in, some of them near-unrecognisable in their finery, others immediately familiar despite their elaborate masks. The stage was set; the rest would be up to them.
