In my world, Walburga and Orion have both been gone for quite a while. Mother is controlled by Father's grandparents, the ones you share with him. I am not certain if they are similar to grandmother or not. But I am the only Heir, I am meant to be raised as they see fit. So that I can continue the Black name and traditions. It is not what I wish to do but I do not want them to be angry with me either And they do not approve of Father but now that I know him I Well I suppose I only know him for as long as I've been here but th

[ ... ] Why do people agree to fight in the games?

[...] Pollux and Irma are still alive? Good lord. I had no idea. I thought— I mean, that— My. I was very mistaken. They are worse. Don't hide your thoughts under all that ink, sweetheart. I won't judge you for your worries.

That's a good question. I've often asked the same thing myself, but it's unfortunately rather simple. There was a war a long time ago that depleted the world of its resources, and hunger and poverty were rampant. Eoin Healy brought the world together through the districts. When he did, he discovered the Philosopher's Stone that granted him immortal life. This is the story we are told in school, when we are very young. We are supposed to worship him like a folklore hero, the saviour who will never die, but [...] He's gruesome and bloodthirsty. Nobody wants to fight, not really, but refusing is a death sentence. Not just for you, but anyone you have ever loved or cared for. Healy is clever. He knows your weaknesses. And he's always watching.

There are a lot of spies, too, that quash the rebellions. Not that they happen often, or ever succeed— how do you defeat someone who is immortal? And there are advantages to fighting, as awful as that may seem. I was called because of inevitability. I had to feed my sister and my young cousins, so I took tesserae. That's an extra name in the ballot in exchange for a year's worth of food and oil. I took six before I was called. So many of us have families to support, and that is why we do it. We need to get back home. We need to survive. But only one can, year after year, but the victor is promised innumerable wealth and fame. It doesn't always work like that— in fact, it rarely does.

There are a select few called Careers, who train from birth to fight in the games. I've never understood why, but it seems to be a wealth past time. Careers are more likely to win, but it's never a guarantee.

They are very old, but their minds are still strong. Very strong. Mother says it could end very shortly, though, especially with me at school. I do not understand why she thinks my being at school will effect them but it is what she says. I am not always certain what everyone knows and does not know. When I arrived, no one knew Father was Unwound. They were very upset at the news. But I did not know they did not know.

[ ... ] That sounds very unpleasant. But at the same time it is a thing that is not different across the worlds- a need for some or most to protect family. Never all, though.

Do Careers want to be chosen?

I am so sorry for that, sweetheart. Nobody should have to rely on Pollux and Irma for guidance or care. [...] I'm not sure, either, but mothers often know best. I wouldn't wish ill on my family, but I hope you are free from their thumb before long. I remember being a child, and being smacked if I so much as touched an antique, or looked at my grandmother wrong. There is a reason my parents turned out how they did, and Regulus' as well. [...] I know, dear. I learned that I am unwound in that world as well. It was a surprise, to say the least.

It is home, no matter how unpleasant it may be at times. I am sure you understand. It is what created us, but we don't have to let it be all that we are. [...] You are very insightful for your age. I would have been very honoured to call you my nephew.

I suppose it's possible some have been pushed into it by their parents, but usually they do, yes. Some will even volunteer to take the place of someone else from their district. There were four Careers in my games. They generally work together, too, until the end. They're a force to be reckoned with.
