Game Night Kick Off
Who: Marietta, Lucy, Melinda, Rose (their partners if they choose to bring one) and OPEN to all others to observe
What: Game night kick off
Where: Finnigan's Roost
When: Saturday evening
Rating: That depends on how the subthreads go

Marietta arrived a little early with the supplies for the tasks in tow. The room was set up exactly as she had imagined it would be. There was a bar with the drink supplies for the three drinks they'd settled upon readily available. A set of tables for the first task, a circular course for the second, and a clear spot on the floor for the final. She'd heard from a few individuals that they were looking forward to the evening. Marietta could only hope that others would come as well.

Pre-event mingling

At the appointed time Marietta began to nervously pace the room waiting to see who all was going to arrive. She hoped that people would come to have fun and not focus on who had organized the event. Surely, there was some point where bygones could take hold.

Dominic never truly minded being roped into doing events for the pub, not even ones that fell on a Saturday. He'd complained a little, mostly to tease Seamus, but once he'd discovered he was getting to set the obstacle course he'd settled to with a will. He cast one last steadying charm, to make sure the tables and chairs would be almost impossible to knock over in the scramble, before making his way over to where Marietta was pacing. "Warming up for the race?" he teased. "I didn't think you were participating."

He shoved his hands into his pockets, wishing he could have a cigarette while they waited but knowing Seamus wouldn't hear of it inside the pub. "You don't know how tempted I was to add some extra enchantments to that obstacle course. Make the space underneath the table smaller than it looked or add a bouncy seat to one of the chairs." There was just a hint of mischief in his smile as he suggested, "Maybe next time?" In his opinion it could make for an interested and unexpected additional element to the game.

Marietta believed that for the most part there wasn't much to be set up. She knew the obstacle course was the piece that would take the most work and she was quite pleased with the job Dominic had done. Though if she were honest she wondered if she'd jumped in with too many ideas too quickly. Maybe she should have just stayed with the basic card games Seamus had mentioned when she first brought the idea to him. What if no one really cared for the event? It wouldn't be the first time she'd been a part of something that flopped in the end. If it did then at least she knew she'd found her specialty, failing miserably at everything she tried. "Um... no," she stammered as Dominic's voice pulled her back into the room.

"Sorry," she pulled her hair behind her ear. "Just nervous about how the whole thing might turn out. I've never attempted to put anything together outside of a simple dinner with friends." She was so focused on trying to keep herself calm that she completely missed his suggestion though it would likely make its way into her brain and resurface at just the right time.

When she mentioned the nervousness, Dominic reached out and put a gentle hand on her arm. "What's to be nervous about?" he asked, smiling. He didn't want to dismiss her feelings, only to make her feel a little better. "Everything's set up, all we have to do now is wait for people to show up. It shouldn't be too long - a few minutes." He tipped his head towards Seamus. "Trust me, we have plenty of experience putting things on here. Even if there aren't that many players the first time, word will get out. Chess club was just Seamus and Ron for a few weeks at the beginning."

Actually admitting to her nervousness made Marietta seem a little more human than she had on their date. "Come on," Dominic suggested. "We've got all this drink ingredients. One little drink'll make you feel better."

Marietta flinched slightly when Dominic's hand landed on her arm. She wasn't in a mode where she had prepared herself for a stranger's touch and as such he'd caught her completely off guard. "Will they show up?" she replied taking a small unconscious step to separate them. That was the question was it not? Then he spoke of the chess club and she tried her best not to cringe outwardly. People liked Seamus and Ron which meant that they would come out just to support a friend. Marietta had built so much space between herself and even those she considered friends that she even expect them to pause their lives to support her endeavors.

"I suppose I could check the quality of the Irish Cream," she sighed, wringing her hands together as she turned to check the bar area to see if there was enough extra to allow her to sample the first part of the initial task.

Dominic could sense instantly that he'd misstepped and so he didn't follow when Marietta pulled back, letting her put as much distance between them as she felt comfortable with. "Why wouldn't they?" he asked. "You're giving them a chance to drink and have fun and make fools of themselves." He tipped his head slightly towards the obstacle course on his final words. "The entry fee isn't more than the drinks would cost them from the bar." He had no doubt that people would show up - maybe not a great crowd, but as he'd said, word would spread and then next time (assuming there was a next time) there'd be more.

Nodding, Dominic made his way over to the bar, glancing down at the recipe provided for the first drink. "We really need Seamus for this," he said, his tone light, "he's the one with all the bar tending experience. I apologise in advance if it tastes foul." He surveyed the ingredients, setting the ones he would need to hand. "Here goes nothing," he said once he'd set up and grabbed a glass.

"I don't have the best track record with people caring to be in my presence," she sighed as she took a seat a little ways down the bar from where Dominic was setting up a drink station. When she was younger she'd never noticed that she was nothing more than a tag along. However, as time passed and she got older, Marietta had realized that she was a secondary player in this world. Someone designed to play the supporting role and never the lead. Her actions as a teenager had moved her back even further and it was something she still carried over her head and felt that others did as well. "Not that I blame them, I've never been the most exciting person."

She rested her elbow on the bar and cradled her chin in her hand as she watched Dominic pull some ingredients together. "I'm sure you've picked up a few tricks simply by being in his presence." Not only that but from where she stood it seemed people tended to actually gravitate toward him and crave his opinion. Therefore, she felt confident that he would do a brilliant job.

After those words, Dominic was quiet for a moment while he mixed and measured. He had assumed Marietta was the way she was because she didn't particularly want to be sociable, had even wondered why she'd bothered to bid for a date she obviously had no interest in. Suddenly, he was seeing the situation in a new light. "You're exciting enough to dream this up and put it together," he said, handing over her drink once it was poured into the glass. "Seamus is more than capable of coming up with more-than-enough ideas for this place all by himself, but he still gets pretty giddy when someone else is interested in helping out with that side of it."

Thinking, he poured himself a glass of orange juice, preferring to leave the drinking until he'd dismantled the obstacle course in case he forgot a step. "I'm no good at that bit. I can come up with ideas for rooms and toys and gadgets - but not events. So you've got that going for you." He didn't really know her well enough to start critiquing the way she interacted with people one-on-one, but he did resolve not to be so easily convinced that she was being deliberately rude or distant.

Honestly, the game focus was a selfish endeavor on her part. She worked for Romilda every other weekend and with Cho spending a bulk of her time with Finbar the last thing Marietta needed was to have her extremely private life mix with her public life. "With a best friend who throws some of the best events in the wizarding world it was only natural that she rub off on me." Though she supposed there was always the chance that Cho and Finbar would come to one of these events, but with Quiddich season in full swing she hoped it would be awhile.

"Oh?" Dominic asked, interest piqued. Marietta did have friends, then. Not that he'd thought she didn't, but maybe finding more connections between them would set her more at ease. Or maybe it wouldn't - Dominic was pretty certain he didn't have a complete read on her yet. "Who's that, then?" He knew a few event planers, but if it was Marietta's best friend she was almost-certainly biased, and he didn't want to offend her by guessing the wrong one.

"Cho Chang," she said with a nod as she turned to look at the set up. "We've been friends for years." They'd known each other since before Hogwarts and she had always been thankful to have her around.

"Though she's definitely prone to more high society events," she didn't doubt that Cho could have put this event together. Marietta simply knew that her clientele had become more sophisticated and she definitely didn't want to ask her to spend time where she could be earning money helping with something as silly as game day.

Dominic nodded. "I've worked with Cho once or twice, and we were on the Ravenclaw Quidditch team for a bit at school." Sometimes he forgot Marietta had been in his own house - he certainly hadn't known her well at the time.

"High society isn't really my thing," he admitted, partly in response to Marietta's comment and partly to explain why he hadn't worked more with Cho. "I've done a few things here and there, but I think I prefer business stuff to personal - at least when it comes to architectural work." He had a feeling that people tended to be more reasonable about limitations on their business premises, whereas they wanted their house to look exactly as they imagined - even when that was barely possible.

Marietta hadn't really paid attention to anyone that wasn't within the window of a year below or ahead of her. That wasn't to say there weren't people who hadn't been worth her attention, she simply wasn't the sort to reach out too far.

"It isn't mine either," Marietta admitted. "For the most part I prefer the a simple night with a few good friends." She looked at the time and noted it was just a few more minutes until she hoped people started arriving. "I know though that there's an expectation of some public socialization. I figured if I forced myself to take lead on something I'd have to get a little ways outside of my comfort one."

Dominic nodded thoughtfully at Marietta's words, adding this information to his internal store. It seemed his initial reading of her had been far from fair. Dominic had met people who were nervous around strangers before, but Marietta hadn't seemed nervous at the time so he'd interpreted her actions differently. Now, though, he felt like he was seeing a fuller picture of her.

"That makes sense," he said. Privately, he thought it was quite a brave way to go about it. Most would have gone along to one of Finnigan's existing activities, but Marietta had chosen to take charge of her own. "How's it working so far?" he asked. "Or is it too soon to tell?"

"Time will tell," she replied. So far she was a bit disappointed but a few individuals had signed up. Looking at the wall she noted the time.

"And it seems that for now time is telling us to begin."
