just a note ...
... about the owls and the press release that went out today.
EVERY character in the game (as they are all at least 18) will receive an envelope containing the invitation and RSVP card with their morning owlpost. Throughout the day, all the various wireless stations will be having their DJs talking about the information that was included in the press release. So basically no matter where you tune your wireless, you're going to hear about it at some point in the day. There will be an article in Thursday's Daily Prophet with the information from the press release and possibly an interview with the Minister about it.
Yes, Admiral Ackbar is probably screaming at everyone "IT'S A TRAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAP!!!" But also consider the phrasing in the press release: "promoting unity." Most characters who might realise that it's a trap will probably stop and think about that: "if I speak out against the ball / don't go, will I look like I'm against unity in the wizarding world? is the Ministry using this to see who's ~against unity~?" Not to mention that, say, Order members and DMLE personnel might want to go, just to be able to protect the greater populace from harm when the inevitable Death Eater attack occurs. And remember, although the Order has their suspicions about the Malfoys, to the greater wizarding world, they're are clean and pure as freshly-fallen snow, so they might not immediately see the Voldemort-link.
So plz to keep that in mind before your character flies off the handle with a public "WHAT THE FUCK, DOES THE MINISTER THINK WE'RE ALL STUPID?! THIS IS CLEARLY AND OBVIOUSLY A TRAP!! THE MINISTER IS IN LEAGUE WITH VOLDEMORT AND WANTS TO KILL US ALL. >:("
