Badminton? Really? This is news?

[Sam A./Christine]

White pawn to A4.

[This is what we use for chess, if you're curious.]

So your point is I can still be boring if I'm busy.

You know this is not my point, monsieur. You are very good at twisting words. Do others realize you do it?

What is your point, then?

You do not answer. If I tell you of my experience with the memories, will you do the same?

Rook takes Pawn at D3.

No, they don't realize it. I still want to know what your point is.

B7 → G2.

You say your days are empty, and so you are boring. I contend you are not boring, despite your empty days. Bored, perhaps, oui? I see everyone speaking to you here. People do not speak with boring men thus. It is one of the good things about being a ruined woman, that I may speak my mind.

[...] Will you make me go first? I suspect you would say you are no gentleman, and as I am no lady, the rules of polite society do not apply.

F4 to F5.

They speak to me of nothing of importance. It entertains me, for a time. It is a shame that women must be ruined to speak their minds, but men are expected to be ruined to begin with. If it were the reverse, we might learn interesting things.

You are expecting me to say no, I will go first to keep from troubling you, but that is not what I am going to do.

G2 → E4.

You mean to say it is not this way in your time? I believed there was great equality.

No, Daniel, I do not expect you to do anything to keep from troubling me. I have not known you long, but I know you well enough not to expect that from you.

D3 to D4.

Perhaps not as equal as we would like to believe, but no, that is not what I meant to say. I meant in your time, not mine.

If I trouble you, you have much bigger problems than my commentary.

You like to do that. To say something, like that you would offer to go first to keep from troubling me, and then turn it around to make it seem I mentioned being troubled first. You do not trouble me, Daniel. I have known far more troubling men than you.

[He reflects, looks back.] Yes, you mentioned your troubling men before. Are they easier to deal with now?

Men are interesting, monsieur. Once there is no battle, they lose interest. Or perhaps it is only that the battle was more interesting than the city they both wished to claim.

You will not champion your sex, monsieur?

I saw many memories. I would say over a dozen, and most of them were not pleasant. In only telling you one, then the choice I make says something of me, does it not?

We did not have so many. I will attempt not to draw conclusions, should you wish it.

[As she tries to find a way out of the trap.] Very good move, monsieur.

You will judge and simply not tell me. A zebra cannot change its stripes. I will refrain from telling you of your own avoidance of a funeral, oui?

[A pause and press of her pen's tip as she considers.] I saw a man and a woman. They lived together, and I saw this through the eyes of the man. He was numb, and she was leaving him, but he did not care. I asked myself, why was he with her? In your time, there is no expectation of marriage. Why live with someone if you do not care? Laziness, perhaps? It was the best I could determine. No need to look for someone for intimacy, but why engage in intimacy at all without any level of desire or passion? Or have things changed so much in the future that these things no longer matter?

The bishop and the queen work well together, but you got my Kingside Bishop. Awhile ago.

Please do not mention the funeral. I ask politely only once.

There are many reasons men and women stay together. Sometimes money, sometimes convenience, sometimes embarrassment. Do not judge so harshly, sweet.

C6 → E7.

I have not played since my father died. It is easy to lose track of the game with conversation these days.

[She does not mention it again.]

No, but this man needed no money, and he was not embarrassed. He simply did not care, monsieur. He had asked her to stay because she was there, no more, because he did not care one way or another. Do you find me harsh? This jilted woman past her prime and of no reputation, as I suspect this is how you see me.

Queen takes Rook at F8. Checkmate.

I cannot think when I last played. Everyone knew how to play in Europe but we always found easier games, too drunk to bother with the thought required.

No. You are the opposite of harsh, but I asked you not to judge harshly. Companionship, even lazy and cheaply bought, is sometimes the easier route.

You must strive to be duller, monsieur, so that I may concentrate.

This was not companionship. He did not care if she was there. He did not care for her when she was there. She did not matter, monsieur. Why go through the trouble then?

Next time I will be less sober, it will be easier that way. Though perhaps less dull.

I expect I could not last nearly as long if you were entirely sober.

That is what I ask you. I left the memory without understanding it. The horrible ones, the ones that hurt, those I could understand. This one, no, I cannot. I do not believe I have ever been numb. Now, it is your turn.

No, I do not improve. [And he's certainly drinking now, yes.]

I saw nothing deeply horrible. Most things were... very pleasant. Some, I think, from the monster's world, which is a little like storybooks until you are there and living it, and then it is just brutal and unpleasant.

I believe I sang as you, which is too bad, because you/I was singing and I could not listen properly. You missed the first C, non?
