Badminton? Really? This is news?

[Sam A./Christine]

White pawn to A4.

[This is what we use for chess, if you're curious.]

The bishop and the queen work well together, but you got my Kingside Bishop. Awhile ago.

Please do not mention the funeral. I ask politely only once.

There are many reasons men and women stay together. Sometimes money, sometimes convenience, sometimes embarrassment. Do not judge so harshly, sweet.

C6 → E7.

I have not played since my father died. It is easy to lose track of the game with conversation these days.

[She does not mention it again.]

No, but this man needed no money, and he was not embarrassed. He simply did not care, monsieur. He had asked her to stay because she was there, no more, because he did not care one way or another. Do you find me harsh? This jilted woman past her prime and of no reputation, as I suspect this is how you see me.

Queen takes Rook at F8. Checkmate.

I cannot think when I last played. Everyone knew how to play in Europe but we always found easier games, too drunk to bother with the thought required.

No. You are the opposite of harsh, but I asked you not to judge harshly. Companionship, even lazy and cheaply bought, is sometimes the easier route.

You must strive to be duller, monsieur, so that I may concentrate.

This was not companionship. He did not care if she was there. He did not care for her when she was there. She did not matter, monsieur. Why go through the trouble then?

Next time I will be less sober, it will be easier that way. Though perhaps less dull.

There must be a reason, else he would not.

I expect I could not last nearly as long if you were entirely sober.

That is what I ask you. I left the memory without understanding it. The horrible ones, the ones that hurt, those I could understand. This one, no, I cannot. I do not believe I have ever been numb. Now, it is your turn.

No, I do not improve. [And he's certainly drinking now, yes.]

I saw nothing deeply horrible. Most things were... very pleasant. Some, I think, from the monster's world, which is a little like storybooks until you are there and living it, and then it is just brutal and unpleasant.

I believe I sang as you, which is too bad, because you/I was singing and I could not listen properly. You missed the first C, non?

Which storybooks are these?

You are talking about my first aria, my first night as Marguerite? Yes, I did. I was not even the understudy. Only a chorus girl, untrained in the role and with only one afternoon to learn it in. I only remember being frightened.

I do not miss the first C any longer.

None in particular. I mean that his time is far in the past. I cannot say exactly, because I do not live his life the way we lived the memories.

No. You are a natural, as we say in English.

How is it with you then?

No, I am not. I have had a teacher since I was seven, and my father's life was his music. I was raised to song, monsieur, in the way others are raised to food and words.

Like a dream. Sometimes strong, easy to remember, but usually not. Very distant. It is... not unpleasant, usually.

You are. The training only goes so far.

Do injuries carry over? I have not had anyone to ask that, but I wondered if it was always the case.

Merci, Monsieur.

[After hesitation.] I am sorry for your loss. I know Samantha can be [...] blunt, but she does not mean anything by it.

Then I hope your storybook is not as dangerous as Samantha's life seems to be.

[A pause in which to consider an honest answer.] Yes. I believe so. I am as enamored of romantic stories as any woman, monsieur. I know what it is to be loved like that, and I know what it is to lose, and yet I like the stories all the same.

You are soft and inquisitive. You have spent most of your life ruled by the will of men stronger than you, and now that they have abandoned you you are finding your strength better than you expected. You are a gifted, natural musician, with a voice of high caliber, and you are devout in your worship of song. It too gives you strength. But you are lonely, and you are so accustomed to the feeling you do not fully know it.
