Who: Kozue and Tom
What: Sneaky Conversations. Or conversations and sneaking.
When: Evening, after the dungeon and the angels and all
Where: The lawn outside Tom's room
Why: It's too stereotypical not to do.

Plink. Plink. Plinkplinkplink. Something was hitting the window of Tom's room with light force, and persistent, uneven rhythm; something was being thrown against the window. A pause. And the whole process repeated. Most people in the world probably wouldn't notice it, but Kozue was counting on Tom's extreme paranoia. He kept his room like a fortress, practically. He'd have to notice a weird sound. (And if he didn't the dog would.)

She was standing below his window, throwing handfuls of small pebbles up at the window every so often. And waiting.

After a moment a small furry face appeared in the window, tail wagging and tongue out.

After another second Tom appeared, he slid the window up and looked at Kozue confused.

"Kondo... what are you doing here?"

"Well, I got busted going through the building." She lowered her hand, and looked (up?) at Tom. My. The window wasn't all that high up, although it was still above her head level. That just wasn't saying much.

"Hi, Max-chan," she cooed, smiling. Then, right back to Tom. "And I thought this was kind of a cool way to get your attention. Without your phone number or anything." She shrugged; she really should have his number, if only to prove that she could get anyone's digits, even anti-social Americans. Besides, they were on the team together.

"Plus the front door is booby trapped. The rocks on the window is interesting. What do you want?"

His response was curt, as usual. Max on the other hand seemed to be trying to climb down to be held by Kozue. Tom was preventing him from doing so to prevent his little puppy legs.

"Booby trapped?" She stared up at him, perplexed. He had traps on his door? Wasn't that… like, super against the rules, and a bad plan to boot?

The curtness of his answer took her aback slightly, but she responded, anyway, clasping her hands behind her back. It was mostly an unconscious motion, but the gesture, and the stance, were remarkably childish in their way. "I had a question for you." Suitably mysterious enough to make him have to ask what, instead of retreating inside and shutting the window.

Suitably mysterios enough for Tom to be curious was true. He crossed his arms and leaned on the window sill.

"Alright then , ask it."

But not suitably mysterious enough for him to actually invite her inside. That had to be an American rudeness thing, she decided, and resolved to write it off. "Well… I was wondering. About what you said in Paradise. To Sonozaki-sempai."

She stopped, and watched for a reaction.

Tom sighed, if she was going to talk about Paradise, they couldn't just sit outside his window, and he wasn't letting her worm her way in again. She was too dangerous, and everyone knew how long relationships with Kozue Kondo lasted. He knew he was just disposable to her.

But if they were going to talk, they should do it in private, so he lifted Max up and handed the puppy to her.

"Here."

Then disappeared from view. As soon as Max was in her arms, he begin trying to lick her hands and face.

After a second Tom reappeared, hoping out of his window and shutting it. He held Mac's leash and looked at Kozue.

"Let's take him for a walk. He could use it. And after running into you and Wakanata by accident I've carefully planned my routes to avoid people."

He clipped the leash on Max and started walking.

She accepted Max, said hello with a few choice scratches around his ears, and stared up at the window in confusion; what had he handed her the dog for? What was he even doing just passing puppies through windows and vanishing and not—

And there he was again. "You really plan your routes to avoid people?" She asked, casting a nearly-pouting glance up at the window. She would have liked not to run around any more, but… well, the prospect of running into booby traps was actually a good reason to go walking instead of hanging out indoors. "Okay." She turned Max around so that Tom could clip the collar onto him.

"Yeah, I've been avoiding people these days, I have work to do."

Tom set Max on the ground, who began walking. The pup's tail wagged with each prancing step (and yes he pranced. He never got to walk with two people before.) He constantly paused to look back at the two of them to ensure they were still there.

After a minute or two, Tom turned to Kozue.

"You wanted to ask about what I said in Paradise? Was some part of it confusing?"

"I think you're popular, I think that social contract everyone engages in earns you a good deal of people who enjoy being around you. I think Ikeda gets off on being in that position, I think Aoi doesn't realize she's in that position."

Tom shrugged.

"But the point is, I'm not one of those people. I don't engage in the social contract, it's a waste of time. And no one is interested in actually *being* friends with me."

He pointed at her.

"You came her because of Max, or you came here because you think I'm on the team, just because I have a persona. And maybe I don't want friends. Yeah... I work alone, by myself, help out and move on. Nobody on your team cares about me, and you shouldn't either.

Case in point, I don't use honorifics, because I don't respect anyone enough to use them."

Tom nodded, and hoped that he made the impression that would drive her off.

Max on the other hand, didn't help matters. Seeing his two friends arguing had brought the puppy back, he circled Kozue, getitng his leash tangled around her legs, and looked between them with a curious head cock.

Kozue had been about to respond, when she felt the dog's leash wrapping around her ankles—instead of objecting to Tom's claim that nobody cared about him, or his rude boast about his yobitsute, she squeaked in surprise, and started trying to extricate herself. It didn't work wonderfully—in fact, it nearly resulted in her toppling to the ground as she tried to step forward and found her foot too restricted to manage it. She rebalanced herself, and looked over at Tom. Who was holding the leash.

"Do you mind?" She asked, pointing downwards.

Then, "Do you spend a lot of time thinking about that stuff?"

Tom's hands moved forward as she nearly toppled, but once she righted herself, he slipped his hands into his pockets.

Tom stepped forward, and moved his arms around her to unwrap the leash. Given their height difference it was rather easy for Tom to move his arms over her head without wrapping his arms around her.

"I've had reason to think about how you people engage in social interaction."

"You have?"

She looked up at him. Even though he was able to disentangle her mostly by moving his hands over her head, he was still very close to her for a few moments, and she was left staring directly at his chest. He was warm, and very close by, and she flushed slightly. And fixed her eyes directly on his solar plexus.

"And that's the conclusion you came to?"

With Kozue untangled, Tom took a step back. Max however was seemed rather adament about Tom not stepping away from the girl, and so the puppy had planted himself. It didn't actually help as the puppy weighed less then a pound.

Tom frowned at Max and looked back at Kozue.

"That social contract is just an act that people put on because no one actually cares about each other? And how I have to deal with that?

I've felt that way for awhile, I've just had to think about it now that there are people I talk to... in general... at all."

"Huh." She stepped away, brushed non-existent dust off of her skirt, and looked down at Max. What this 'social contract' thing he was talking about was, she hadn't the slightest clue. And that people put on an act because they didn't care about each other in reality? It was sort of… her face fell slightly as she contemplated it.

To save herself from actually having to do such deep thought, she glanced down at the dog; "Are you okay, Max-chan?"

Max's tail wagged at the attention Kozue was giving him. He tried to lean down and lick her hands. Even leaping up to place his paws on her arms.

Tom now cocked his head slightly confused. So many people seemed confused by his attitude, yet when he explained it they often just let it pass. Perhaps they agreed?

He crossed his arms and watched her pet Max for a little bit.

"Is that all you wanted to ask me about?"

"I can't remember the rest of it now," she said, noncommittal, reaching down to scratch Max's head again, showering him with a moment or two of affection. She scratched behind his ears, and let him do that lovey-puppy-kisses thing all over. "How are you doing? Still injured at all?"

Tom nodded and stood up, tugging Max, who felt that Tom had spent enough time with friends, so he got up too. Tom reached out a hand to help Kozue up off of the grass. He actually felt comfortable enough with Kozue that when her wishing bad things would just go away bothered him he felt okay asking her about it.

"Why do you guys do that? Nawanaka, Ikeda, Oubai... everyone would rather just ignore this and hope it goes away rather then deal with it."

She looked momentarily surprised that he was offering her a hand up — but that was great progress on his part and she wasn't turning down, so the took his hand and let him pull her to her feet.

His question, though. She swallowed. "I don't know about everyone else, but they scared me, and it's like… a nightmare, you never want to have again, because you never want to feel that scared. And if they come back, the butterfly said it couldn't save us." She fell quiet after that.

In truth, she'd be willing to bet that Kou, Kiriko and Toshi all felt the same way; she'd also be willing to bet that not one of them would so frankly admit the reason. But her reputation really didn't stand on courage or toughness, so for her? Exhibiting weakness was actually a good thing; people liked cuteness and vulnerability. Empathy with the cute and unfortunate was practically one of the national turn ons. So it worked just fine for her once in a while.

Tom paused and put his hands in his pockets. he didn't look at Kozue as he spoke.

"Then we have to beat them ourselves. We'll always fear them as long as we don't understand them. If we know what they can do, we can come up with a plan to beat them. If we just hope they go away then when they do come we'll be doomed.

We either fight or we die."

He finally looked at her and frowned.

"If this is too much for you... just because you have a persona doesn't mean you have to do this. You didn't volunteer for this, and so it's not your responsibility. You have a choice."

She waited a moment, and then shook her head—it send her curls bobbing in every which direction, and some of them flopped into her face. With one hand, she brushed them back, and actually answered: "I don't think you're right. If people might die, and I can help them, it's my duty to help. People don't… volunteer, I guess, for responsibility. They just get it." At least, something this big? You don't choose it or ask for it.

She stopped, and looked around, waiting for Tom's response: another lecture about people not caring for one another? It seemed like it was in the cards.

Tom paused, and thought for a long time. He seemed to formulate his answer.

"If there are other people willing to go in and save those who might die, and you know they will, then you don't need to do it.

Unless I get killed you can be sure I'm going to go in after everyone who gets sent to paradise, so if you are afraid you can... give up."

"Thanks, sempai, for the offer, but I'm fine. Let's just go back to the dorm already."

She smiled down at Max, said something encouraging, along the lines of let's go home, Max-chan, and started walking. She was trying to figure out whether to follow the instinct that told her to be flattered that Sagaki was trying to protect her feelings, despite claiming not to care about anyone, or the instinct that told her to be insulted that he thought she was so pitiful that she'd quit just because she wasn't the only one who had a Persona…

In the end, though, flattered made more sense; He's just trying to be nice, and gallant, and gentlemanly. To be protective. You should appreciate that.
