Who: Kozue and Tom
What: Sneaky Conversations. Or conversations and sneaking.
When: Evening, after the dungeon and the angels and all
Where: The lawn outside Tom's room
Why: It's too stereotypical not to do.

Plink. Plink. Plinkplinkplink. Something was hitting the window of Tom's room with light force, and persistent, uneven rhythm; something was being thrown against the window. A pause. And the whole process repeated. Most people in the world probably wouldn't notice it, but Kozue was counting on Tom's extreme paranoia. He kept his room like a fortress, practically. He'd have to notice a weird sound. (And if he didn't the dog would.)

She was standing below his window, throwing handfuls of small pebbles up at the window every so often. And waiting.

"Huh." She stepped away, brushed non-existent dust off of her skirt, and looked down at Max. What this 'social contract' thing he was talking about was, she hadn't the slightest clue. And that people put on an act because they didn't care about each other in reality? It was sort of… her face fell slightly as she contemplated it.

To save herself from actually having to do such deep thought, she glanced down at the dog; "Are you okay, Max-chan?"

Max's tail wagged at the attention Kozue was giving him. He tried to lean down and lick her hands. Even leaping up to place his paws on her arms.

Tom now cocked his head slightly confused. So many people seemed confused by his attitude, yet when he explained it they often just let it pass. Perhaps they agreed?

He crossed his arms and watched her pet Max for a little bit.

"Is that all you wanted to ask me about?"

"I can't remember the rest of it now," she said, noncommittal, reaching down to scratch Max's head again, showering him with a moment or two of affection. She scratched behind his ears, and let him do that lovey-puppy-kisses thing all over. "How are you doing? Still injured at all?"

Tom reached up and rubbed the back of his neck.

"I often feel like I'm recovering from injuries, but... well it takes a lot longer to heal from them then it does to get them."

He looked away and then let out a breath.

"Are... you're alright right?"

"I got off pretty light, at the end of it all." Aside from a few big bruises, she really was okay. She continued petting Max; then something that Tom had said struck her, and she looked up, thoughtful and critical. "You often feel like, or you often are recovering from injuries?"

Tom walked over to Kozue and sat down, if Kozue was going to continue petting Max they might as well get down to the puppies level.

"I'm often recovering from injuries. At least the ones I get on my own. The ones received in Paradise I'll accept that healing magic for."

"From fighting a gang war with street punks. Right."

Her tone of voice conveyed… well, it was somewhere between sarcasm, prove me wrong because that rumor is pretty far-fetched, and a simple, flat desire to know if Tom was actually doing something so insane. Or insane-seeming, at least.

"And it's nice healing magic," she insisted quietly, looking down at Max. Because that was her thing—she wasn't good for fighting or casting magic or solving puzzles or games or talking the Shadows down. She pretty much came along to Paradise just to use Dia.

Tom nodded.

"Everyone needs something to do in their spare time. And no one else is dealing with the garbage in this town."

Tom reached out and rubbed the head of the puppy.

"I'm glad it turned out that it functioned just the way it is supposed to. it would have been bad if we couldn't use it."

"How is fighting street gangs taking care of the trash in the town?" Kozue asked, frowning slightly. "Shouldn't cops do that?" She kept scratching Max, and looked away from Tom slightly.

"You could pick a different hobby," she suggested after a brief moment of thought.

"Cops aren't going to come into a high school and arrest bullies. And no one is ever going to touch the likes of Reizo Shirai."

Tom shrugged.

"I was kidding you know, I don't actually have hobbies."

She squinted slightly. That was his idea of kidding? I don't have hobbies? God, this guy was unbalanced. "Oh, well," she stopped, and frowned. "You got it backwards, anyway. Shirai Reizo. And as far as Shirai-san goes," she stopped, and frowned. "Karma, I guess."

Or fervently hoped. Either way.

"it's family name last in English. And karma will hit Shirai, even if I have to make it happen."

He sat for a moment, and thought. Then looked at Kozue.

"Kondo... really what are you doing here?"

"If you make it happen, it's not karma," Kozue replied, shifting to sit instead of crouching, since that's apparently what they were doing. She settled, and then dusted off whatever mess might have possibly gotten onto the side of her skirt. Even if it didn't exist.

She frowned--he had used yobitsute again, of course--and then replied, "Checking on you. Figuring out what's up with you." Figuring out if you have feelings for Renju.

"Of course it's karma, Shirai does something bad, and something equally bad happens to him."

Tom nodded. He had never seen a problem with him being an agent of karma.
He shook his head.

"I don't need checked up on. I'm not a little kid, I've been taking care of myself since I was six."
If I did, I would never admit it to either of us.

Kozue gave him a flat look at the first comment, but didn't bother saying anything. That wasn't quite how it worked. "Yes, but I need to see how you are." She scratched through the hair around Max's neck.

"And I wanted to find out what you thought about everything. Since you know about Christian angels, apparently, and you were the one who had a plan."

Tom was beginning to feel distinctly uncomfortable with Kozue. Mostly because just as in the past, he felt like she cared, she was interested in who he was, she wanted to be his friend, and he wanted to be hers. This was clearly the source of her popularity, and she had to be lying, no one could possibly care about other people like this.

Except Aoi.

"I'd had some passing knowledge on them from earlier research. I've been looking into it even more since Paradise. I don't have anything helpful, besides a pretty firm belief that they aren't actually angels."

"Hm. I guess that's pretty helpful, even…" She shrugged. "What do you think they were, then?" She pulled back from petting Max, putting her hands into her lap. It wasn't entirely helpful, but it was way more than everything else they had to go on.

Tom shrugged.

"Shadow's mostly. Possibly what happens to people who's shadows kill them, since denying your shadow turns them into a separate creature, maybe they survive. Or those monsters we beat up are sort of the weakest of the Shadows, and the powerful they get, the more sentient. We've already seen that a persons shadow is more powerful then the regular ones, able to talk and plan."

Kozue nodded, finding a stray thread on the hem of her skirt and beginning to fuss with it as Tom went on. It made sense, she supposed—and the pit of her stomach wasn't weighing in at all, not in the same way that it always seemed to drop when she thought of the possibility that these were real angels, servants of some real creator-god whom she'd never actually believed existed.

She wasn't sure if the dropping feeling in her stomach meant it was true or meant it was false, but it was a reaction, and Tom's theory brought about no such thing. "I guess… I hope we don't find out, actually, and they just never come back." Like that was going to happen, but. "Should we head back to the dorms?"
