Who: Kozue and Tom
What: Sneaky Conversations. Or conversations and sneaking.
When: Evening, after the dungeon and the angels and all
Where: The lawn outside Tom's room
Why: It's too stereotypical not to do.

Plink. Plink. Plinkplinkplink. Something was hitting the window of Tom's room with light force, and persistent, uneven rhythm; something was being thrown against the window. A pause. And the whole process repeated. Most people in the world probably wouldn't notice it, but Kozue was counting on Tom's extreme paranoia. He kept his room like a fortress, practically. He'd have to notice a weird sound. (And if he didn't the dog would.)

She was standing below his window, throwing handfuls of small pebbles up at the window every so often. And waiting.

After a moment a small furry face appeared in the window, tail wagging and tongue out.

After another second Tom appeared, he slid the window up and looked at Kozue confused.

"Kondo... what are you doing here?"

"Well, I got busted going through the building." She lowered her hand, and looked (up?) at Tom. My. The window wasn't all that high up, although it was still above her head level. That just wasn't saying much.

"Hi, Max-chan," she cooed, smiling. Then, right back to Tom. "And I thought this was kind of a cool way to get your attention. Without your phone number or anything." She shrugged; she really should have his number, if only to prove that she could get anyone's digits, even anti-social Americans. Besides, they were on the team together.

"Plus the front door is booby trapped. The rocks on the window is interesting. What do you want?"

His response was curt, as usual. Max on the other hand seemed to be trying to climb down to be held by Kozue. Tom was preventing him from doing so to prevent his little puppy legs.

"Booby trapped?" She stared up at him, perplexed. He had traps on his door? Wasn't that… like, super against the rules, and a bad plan to boot?

The curtness of his answer took her aback slightly, but she responded, anyway, clasping her hands behind her back. It was mostly an unconscious motion, but the gesture, and the stance, were remarkably childish in their way. "I had a question for you." Suitably mysterious enough to make him have to ask what, instead of retreating inside and shutting the window.

Suitably mysterios enough for Tom to be curious was true. He crossed his arms and leaned on the window sill.

"Alright then , ask it."

But not suitably mysterious enough for him to actually invite her inside. That had to be an American rudeness thing, she decided, and resolved to write it off. "Well… I was wondering. About what you said in Paradise. To Sonozaki-sempai."

She stopped, and watched for a reaction.

Tom sighed, if she was going to talk about Paradise, they couldn't just sit outside his window, and he wasn't letting her worm her way in again. She was too dangerous, and everyone knew how long relationships with Kozue Kondo lasted. He knew he was just disposable to her.

But if they were going to talk, they should do it in private, so he lifted Max up and handed the puppy to her.

"Here."

Then disappeared from view. As soon as Max was in her arms, he begin trying to lick her hands and face.

After a second Tom reappeared, hoping out of his window and shutting it. He held Mac's leash and looked at Kozue.

"Let's take him for a walk. He could use it. And after running into you and Wakanata by accident I've carefully planned my routes to avoid people."

He clipped the leash on Max and started walking.

She accepted Max, said hello with a few choice scratches around his ears, and stared up at the window in confusion; what had he handed her the dog for? What was he even doing just passing puppies through windows and vanishing and not—

And there he was again. "You really plan your routes to avoid people?" She asked, casting a nearly-pouting glance up at the window. She would have liked not to run around any more, but… well, the prospect of running into booby traps was actually a good reason to go walking instead of hanging out indoors. "Okay." She turned Max around so that Tom could clip the collar onto him.

"Yeah, I've been avoiding people these days, I have work to do."

Tom set Max on the ground, who began walking. The pup's tail wagged with each prancing step (and yes he pranced. He never got to walk with two people before.) He constantly paused to look back at the two of them to ensure they were still there.

After a minute or two, Tom turned to Kozue.

"You wanted to ask about what I said in Paradise? Was some part of it confusing?"

Kozue frowned slightly, but she couldn't keep that up long. Max was just too cute to allow anyone to be sullen—especially with the tail-wagging, the prancing, the eager glances over his shoulder. How Tom managed to be so sour all the time, she'd never really figured out. Not living with this adorable little guy.

But. Focus.

"Well, aside from how ominous it sounded, I mean, you asked me to take your dog if something went wrong, and that's really only what heroes say in the movies when they're about to die." She paused. "What were you going to say to her? After that."

"I like to cover all angles when I make a plan. I told you both that when you saw an opening to run like hell and to not look back or stop for anything."

Tom put his hands in his pockets.

"That's it... what does Sonozaku have to do with it?"

"I… thought you were going to share more of your plan with her," Kozue lied, strolling along. He was defensive, instead of stoic. That was another sign. She nodded. "And what you were going to ask her to take care of. I had wondered what that was."

Tom's brow knitted.

"I... I don't think I was going to say anything to Sonozaku. I just... I guess maybe because she's... yeah I've been teaching her to fight so she's my student you know.

He crossed his arms.

"Though I'm bothered that the plan didn't end up working. I don't like having to rely on magic butterflies or anything else to save... the team, your team."

"Well, it's better than being dead." That seemed evident to her, at least. She swung her hands along at her sides, thinking; "She's your student?" A pause. Now that explained some stuff—she'd been wondering if Tom had just developed what really did seem like romantic feelings from being around her in Paradise. This answered that question, and the image in her head was kind of cute, to boot.

"But… your plan sounded like it was dangerous. I'm glad that things turned out without anyone getting permanently hurt."

"Well... it was. I mean..."

Tom paused for a moment he let out a breath.

"I figured that if they were as powerful as they claimed then if I could goad them into attacking and then dodging so the bars were hit instead, it would give the team a chance to escape.

Though even in the most... optimistic results, my survival would only have given me the chance to attack the Angels, and delay them long enough for you to run.

Regardless of the outcome, I anticipated it would end wiht me dead. Seeing as we were all going to die anyways, from a fully subjective view point, my death versus everyones seemed like a positive outcome."

Tom shrugged. And looked at Kozue.

"So I lied, the plan would have killed me whether or not it had been successful."

She bit her lip, completely incapable of coming up with a response. What did you say to that? It was like finding out that someone had died—the awkward inability to know how to express feelings, proper or improper. She could say, that's a terrible plan? or how could you think of doing that? or even how could you regret not doing that, when we all got out alive?

She wobbled in her walking slightly, mulling it over. Finally, "I… That's…" She'd wanted to say it was a bad plan, but that was too insulting. "I'm glad you didn't have to go through with it."

Tom looked at Kozue, and felt an odd desire to make Kozue feel better about the situation. He frowned slightly.

"No one else could have done it. If Ikeda is anything to go by I'm exceptional at getting people to hate me.
All of you may have family issues, but I'm the only one who can say without a doubt that if I went down no one would miss me. Except Max, and I'd wager you would take better care of him then I would.

I... I'm... I think it's good that everyone survived. But I'd rather the solutions be because of something we did, *any* of the team, instead of... butterfly magic."

She frowned slightly right back — she'd see his slight frown and raise him a concerned slight frown, even! Expression poker!

"Kiriko-san, I don't think that she really hates you. Or, if she does, she's overreacting." She tried thinking back to figure out if she'd actually seen how Kiriko behaved towards Tom, but all she came up with was the general distant disapproval that was Kiriko's normal public front anyway. "And who says we all have family issues?"

A slight defensive motion of her torso as she walked. Then, she relaxed. Had he mentioned her family to him? Hell, she couldn't remember if she had or not. "But of course someone would miss you. Aside from Max-kun."

She paused, and then, "Also, I kind of want to know. Why do you always use yobisute with everyone?"

* yobisute: calling someone by their family name without any suffixes.

" In the states, revering to someone that way is both informal, and shows that you aren't that close to the person you're speaking to. It's an easy way for me to have everyone I talk to be on equal footing, and less dangerous then using Japanese honorifics."

Tom rounded his shoulders and returned his face to it's previous, neutral expression.

"And please tell me aren't going to have an argument like the ones I've had with Aoi, about how I have friends a d that. It just ends up going back and fourth and we never get anywhere."

She actually snickered at that: "You have arguments--you've had more than one argument--with Misaki-chan, about whether or not you have friends? That's…" She shook her head, and left off. Man, that would be something to watch. Maybe, between the two of them and their far-distant delusions, they'd actually arrive at reality?

"Well, I'm not going to argue. But since I'm your friend, I think I just proved you wrong. Do people in the West really do that? I thought everyone called everyone by their first names. Like. Joe and Smith." First of all, her pronunciation is terrible and a bit cheesy. Second of all, Smith? Really?

Tom frowned, and tried to keep the emotions out of his voice.

"Yeah they do call each other by their first names, but you can't do that here."

Then he held up his hand.

"Hold on a second, you're not..."

Tom shook his head, and took a breath.

"Look, I don't know how it is with most people, but... I don't want this whole thing. I know who you're friends are, I know the people you spend time with.

I'm not one of them. I'm better off alone."

She frowned, and looked back down at Max. "What do you think about my friends, exactly?"

Of course, here it would come; not her friends but her boyfriends. Either he'd be judgmental or he'd be affronted that she wasn't putting out for him—or, at least, that's what she'd expect from most guys, and by now she'd mostly forgotten that she'd come here to find out if he liked Renju or not. Besides, even if he did. Someone was fully capable of having a crush and still being interested in fooling around with Kondo, because it was uncomplicated, and easy.

Never mind that Thomas clearly had no concept of physical affection—he'd asked her what a hug was, for goodness sake.

After a few moments of silence, she responded: "So use honorifics. It's not that complex."
