Lorna was settled on the roof with a mug of cocoa in her hands waiting for Jubilee to do her thing. She'd set one of the cameras trained on the area, so anybody who didn't want to brave the snow and cold could watch from the camera room.

"Okay, they need to hurry the hell up," she said, even the slight green glow around her and Jubilee got brighter, along with the heat she was emanating. "I cannot keep this up forever."

Pete had set up the benches from the old picnic table he kept near his trailer during the warmer months, easily setting them up with one in each hand near his home before unloading a few lawn chairs he had leaning up near the back under a few tarps. It was weird to see them against the paleness of the snow, even in the dark, but if anything that made it easier to see where he was going.

He made a nice little theater area for at least himself and the Guthries, and perhaps a few other bodies if they wanted to hang out. The trailer conveniently blocked any stray wind so overall the night was pretty perfect for a fireworks show.

He hadn't asked if Paige was toting the rest of the crew along, but assumed the chances were pretty high that she was, making some extra hot water just in case, leaving the fixings for hot cocoa on his kitchen counter to be served out when needed. For some reason it wasn't even occurring to him that things were a little different now, mostly focusing on getting everything done before they were too late to watch.

He was inside for the moment pulling mugs out of the cupboard, the main door open, the screen shut to keep as much of the cold out as he could. Aloysha seemed to sense excitement in the air and had his nose poking against the glass, peering out into the darkness expectantly.

It hadn't taken any effort whatsoever to convince the littles that they wanted to go see fireworks, and once everyone was bundled up, Paige and Sam headed down with them to where Pete had been setting up some seats. It didn't hit her until after she'd brought it up to them that maybe she was supposed to go down alone, but Pete would understand. It was a rare opportunity to see the kids in genuine moments of happiness, and there was no way she was going to not bring them and give them that chance.

She was carrying Lew sideways by the time they made it down to the benches, and she gave him a kiss on the cheek before depositing him on a bench. The fireworks hadn't started yet, and Pete appeared to still be in his trailer. After getting the go-ahead from Sam, she left the others to settle into their seats and headed into the trailer, smiling at Al as she pulled the door open and cooing, "Hey, Al! How's it goin', buddy?"

She gave the dog a scratch before straightening up, making sure that the door closed behind her, and finally turned to look around the room, spotting Pete over in the kitchen. Smiling, she waved. "Hey."

Pete heard the kids even before Paige got anywhere near the door but didn't look up from what he was doing until he heard someone actually enter, glancing over his shoulder to see Paige. A smile crossed his face but he went back to what he was doing for the moment. The scent of cocoa filled his nostrils as he made his first mug, still not sure how many more he needed to add to that. At least he knew he had enough to serve everyone, as he'd done it several times during Guthrie-get-togethers already.

Al, of course, was happy to monopolize her for a few seconds, as if all his wishes had been answered, minus the fact that he wasn't outside yet. Still, there were people in the house now, which meant he was at least where part of the action was.

Pete looked over again in time to see the wave, nodding to her in greeting as his hands were occupied. "Hi, how many do we have out there? I heard little voices out there too." For some reason, even as he spoke, turning his eyes back to hot cocoa, his cheeks tinted a little bit, as if he was finally remembering the last hour or so. "Is Sam out there too?"

She started toward the kitchen, glancing over her shoulder. There was going to be a lot of cocoa to pass out, but it was nothing Pete wasn't used to. "We have all of them."

"Yeah, Sam's out there." She nodded, sitting on the edge of the window seat and clapping her hands, trying to get Al's attention as she watched Pete. "We rounded up the whole gang. Well, actually most of the gang was hanging around anyway so there wasn't a whole lot of real rounding that needed to be done."

"You need a hand with that?" She gestured toward the cocoa, not entirely sure how to go about addressing the issue that had been brought up on the journal. Or the non-issue, as it were. Stalling and rambling seemed like the best way to go.

Jubilee was snuggled beside Lorna in light winter-gear (thanks ever so much to Lorna's ability to keep them toasty) but seated on a folded up blanket to provide some cushion against the chilly roof.

"It's their loss," Jubilee said, forming pistols with her hands and shooting a few test fireworks out to the playground, where they burst in a sparkling cloud of color that refracted off the ice in bizarre and amazing ways. It took her breath away a little, the way her powers still did every now and then. The beauty of it, the feeling of control--it soothed something inside her on a deep level she barely noticed. All she knew was fuck yeah fireworks!

"Thanks for the cocoa, by the way," She aimed a giant grin at Lorna--sweets were her major weakness. But she immediately turned her focus back to the not-too-distant playground, shooting off a small volley of blue and gold sparkles that swirled around the slide before bursting in a halo behind it, lighting it up as if from the inside out. The grin never faded from her face, it only brightened as she kept going, sending off small experimental swirls of blue and yellow and gold until they slowly began to merge together, forming all shades of green in a tribute to Victor and Lorna.

Ororo felt like she hadn't done anything relaxing in days, and the announcement of fireworks was hardly something she was going to ignore. She didn't bother with a coat, but slipped on her boots, grabbing a mug of tea and murmuring to herself at the taste of it as she made her way out of the mansion. The moment she was in the open air, she smiled a little, turning her gaze up as cleared the skies where the display would be.

"Mm." She nodded as if giving herself a small pat on the back for a job well done, took another sip. As smaller fireworks went up, she laughed a bit, lifting up into the air to join the others on the roof, settling comfortably on the other side of Lorna. "And who, might I ask, had this wonderful idea?"

Lorna had to smile as Jubilee shot a few fireworks towards the ice csstles. It really was gorgeous. She'd had to shut down her electromagnetic vision for this, but it was totally worth it.

"That's for the northern lights over ice carnival," she said, casting a look around. Unfortunately, with all the snow, it was hard for her to see their resident Jack Frost even with her magnetic senses on. He blended in too well She hoped Bobby was watching from somewhere, since brightening up everyone's life had been the point.

She had to cheer for the green, then looked over as Ororo joined them. "Group effort," she told her. "Bobs gave me the idea, and Jubes was my willing minion for a cup of cocoa." She offered her cup to their resident weather goddess. "Have some. I swear I didn't give any to Jubilee."

Lorna had dosed the second thermos with a liberal shot of her coveted last bottle of kaulua. Which was what she was drinking.

"Lorshmore's idea, completely," Jubilee volunteered with pleasure, now letting the colors turn into swirls of silver and blue--weather colors, she reasoned. She shot a few into the air, relatively low, but in clear and grateful acknowledgment of Ororo's sky-clearing.

She grinned at the suggestion that she didn't have any cocoa, especially since she had such a bad reputation for hyperactivity. But in this case, it was paying off for everyone.

She was now working in arcs of blue that swirled through the sky like smoke before bursting into showers of sparkle. Making a screwed up face of concentration, she slowly work on a relatively mushy looking but unmistakable rabbit in frosty pink. It hopped clumsily around the playground before leaping into the sky, where it swirled into nothingness and exploded.

"It's very pretty," said a sudden voice, really only audible to Jubilee and Lorna. Footprints in the snow on the roof were the only sign anyone had been there whatsoever. She headed away from the warmth and the company, making room for when Jimmy joined her. The cold wasn't going to bother her that much and if she did get shivery, she was pretty sure Jimmy wouldn't mind if she clung to him for warmth. He was nice like that. A gentleman.

So she settled to watch, otherwise keeping to herself.

It didn't take Jimmy long to get up on the roof. It creaked a bit in protest of his weight, but the mansion was in good repair and the roof was reinforced.

He paused as he saw Ororo sitting with Lorna and Jubilee. A small smile crossed his face when she noticed him. He gave her a nod, then started casting around for Alisa.

Her footprints made it much easier to find her. Careful to stop a few feet from where they stopped so as not to walk into her, he crouched down.

It was really beautiful, the way the fireworks reflected off the ice. He hoped it was just as amazing for everyone else who didn't see things with such clarity and sharpness as he did.

"I'm glad you came," he told Alisa, looking towards the directed he knew she was. "It's pretty. I wish everybody could see it as well as I do."

Alisa looked Jimmy's way when she heard the roof creak a little. Maybe this had been a bad idea to bring the big guy up here. But it seemed to hold and he was apparently quite capable of maneuvering across the roof without problem.

She scooted a little closer to him once he settled down on the roof, setting a hand on his arm so he'd know exactly where she was at all times. Or at least have a better aproximation. "I probably would have come anyway," now her voice was only directed towards him, "You just wouldn't have known."

A little, hidden smile flickered only for herself, "I may not be able to see it as well but I certainly have an appreciation for it anyhow. Kind of a complicated feeling having to do with sudden visibility that I can't really explain."

Most things, even when reinforced, creaked under his weight. The world was just not made for someone his size and weight. One of the things he envied Piotr for. He got to be more normal sized most of the time.

Jimmy looked down as he felt her hand on his arm through his jacket. It was strange to see the slight depression, a few extra folds that no one else would notice, especially in the dimness of the night. He could sense the weight of her hand as well. But couldn't see it at all. It was fascinating really.

"I would have known," he assured her with a small smile. "I just wouldn't have said anything. Like this afternoon. You always come, even if you just watch." Which was a start. Maybe if he kept quietly encouraging her, she'd inch out her shell a little further.

Jimmy chuckled softly at the conversations, cheers and pops that buzzed away near them. "I think everybody appreciates in their own way, but sometimes, the way I see the world, so clear and detailed and amazingly rich, I'd love to shared with someone. But there never seems to be the right words."

He'd never been good with words anyway. English especially, since there were so many concepts in Tinde that just didn't translate.

Freakshow was dog-paddling in what remained of the liquid center of the lake. A thick crust of ice had solidified the water in a radius twenty feet from the shoreline, but that still left plenty of room hang out. Fireworks weren't something he was about to miss, and every outdoor occasion meant another form to try out, despite the fact that he was currently floundering about in an old favorite. He could save the giant, bright green otter for warmer weather.

He reasoned to himself that taking up position in the lake was safer for everyone. It was dark, and a lot of people would be wandering about, not all of them able to see well, and even though the the lake was pretty far from the ice park (which he'd thoroughly enjoyed all afternoon as the yeti from the old stop motion Rudolph movie) there were little kids wandering around. It never hurt to have a lifeguard on duty.

The burst of smoke that accompanied their arrival on the barracks roof was lost entirely in the darkness, and the faint scent of sulfur dissipated quickly in the cold night air. Kurt let go of Jean-Paul's arm, where he'd held it just above the elbow for the 'port, though his tail kept its place around the other man's waist. Social as he generally was, there'd been too many people congregating on the roof of the mansion for his comfort so he'd brought them here instead. Perhaps not quite as good a vantage point, but for such a close-up, custom arranged display it would still be well more than adequate.

Kurt curled his bare toes against the tiles of the roof for traction, though he didn't really need it, and looked up to where Jubilee's creations were already flaring against the sky, dimming the stars into insignificance.

"Sehr schoen," Kurt murmured, head cocked slightly to the side as he watched blue and gold shift into multiple shades of green. He leaned over to bump his shoulder against JP's and hefted a thermos he'd carried tucked under his other arm. "Coffee? Spiked, of course."

JP was glad that the tail was there because even though it wasn't his first time porting with Kurt it only got minutely easier each time he did it. The disorientation was always present for a few seconds after they'd gotten to their destination but soon he was alright, glancing around on the roof for a dry spot to park his rearend. At the shoulder-bump he gladly took the thermos, grinning. "Wooonderful. Spiked with what this time?"

Finding it a little hard to pick out when there weren't fireworks lighting his way, he reached a hand out, allowing it to glow enough for him to claim an area and plop down, patting the spot beside him as the light subsided. When that was done he worked on cranking the top off the thermos to sniff at the contents. "Mmmm. I'm glad one of us thought ahead."

Kurt didn't loose the grip of his tail until he was sure JP was steady on the slick, uneven surface. Not that he'd likely have fallen more than a few inches at most before he caught himself with his flight, but that didn't really matter. Besides, it was comfortable, and he didn't actually let go until JP slid down to the roof.

"Whiskey," he answered as he settled down next to him, though he'd waited for the flare of the fireworks as well as JP's own light to die away before he picked out his own spot, more comfortable in the darkness than with the glare. His tail curled back around JP's waist without his conscious permission and he settled his forearms on his raised knees as he looked back up for the next burst of color.

"Possibly more whiskey than coffee," he added. They had more whiskey at their disposal than coffee, after all.

The last time Betsy saw fireworks was at the Fourth of July celebration she'd attended the summer before the whole world ended. She did step out to watch it, but she stayed close to the door, off to the side, not joining any of the groups already congregated. She didn't want to interrupt.

Everyone here seemed so... settled. For the most part, they seemed to have known each other for years. Many of them, of course, had gone to school here. Betsy felt like an intruder. More than anything, she felt alone.

She had no one. The one person she wanted most, the one she felt most guilty about having lost, she was beginning to accept she'd never see again. The thought made her ache, and she imagined the feel of his arm around her now. She wrapped her own arms around herself as best she could and leaned against the wall, watching the colours dancing in the sky.

She couldn't help but think this, pretty as it was, must be attracting far too much attention. Were the infected attracted to pretty lights?

She hadn't really been enjoying the fireworks, pretty as they were, because her morose thoughts were getting in the way, so she decided to make herself useful. She decided to walk around the grounds some and keep an eye out for any sign of unwanted attention. Though she was feeling wary, she strolled as if she was just enjoing the evening. She didn't want to put a damper on anyone else's night, after all.

Raven stood at the edge of what she had to admit was a very impressive collection of snow sculptures, watching the fireworks. The sky had cleared considerably just before the explosions had started, and a quick glance up to the roof confirmed that even Ororo had decided to make her way out for the display. It wasn’t entirely surprising. People were always attracted to bright flashing things. Though she had no particular sense of nostalgia associated with fireworks, Raven found herself drawn outdoors as well, having decided that it was better than sitting inside listening to the explosions.

She hadn’t bothered with a coat or any sort of refreshments, as it seemed the general trend was, and she was quickly becoming bored of the flashes. It seemed she wasn’t the only one who wasn’t completely enamored with the fireworks, and she tilted her head slightly as she watched Betsy approach, seemingly wandering aimlessly.

“Braddock,” she greeted once the girl was near, nodding as she looked her over then made a point of peering around her. “Venturing out alone tonight, I see.”

Looking up at the other woman, Betsy smiled and nodded respectfully. Betsy obviously knew Raven through their training. It had been a few weeks now that she'd been working with the other woman, both within the classes and without, but between Betsy's tendency to keep to herself and the fact that Betsy didn't get the impression that Raven interacted on a social level all that much.

Still, she respected the woman so far, and had learned a lot from her already. Considering her frame of mind, Betsy thought perhaps Raven's company would be well-suited to Betsy's current attitude.

"Sometimes being alone is easier," Betsy said, but her tone wasn't clipped or dismissive. She spent a lot of time alone, if only because it was hard to adjust to people who seemed so well-adjusted. Tugging her coat more tightly closed against the chill, asking vaguely, "Are you enjoying the fireworks?"

Kitty had intended to go outside, she really had. But since the lights were being monitored by the security cameras and Kitty had many such displays in her life, she headed down to the control room to monitor the situation. Although she knew the infected would be able to spot the lights, if they were in the area, and would inevitably head for the perimeter, that wasn't why she wanted to monitor the cameras. She hoped that any survivors nearby would see the lights and head for the mansion.

The control room was empty, but Jarvis greeted her when she came in. Kitty's feelings about the AI computer were extremely warm since after all, artificial intelligence had been one of her focuses in college. She'd never created anything nearly as sophisticated as Jarvis, but she viewed him (and Tony, since it was Tony's genius responsible) as an inspiration.

Kitty sat down at the desk and began orienting herself to the surveillance cameras, talking to Jarvis and asking him questions about the maintenance of their borders.

Sharon didn't like fireworks. Fireworks were loud. They started and you didn't know they were going to happen and then all of a sudden there were bright lights and loud noises and they were coming from different places and you didn't know where to run because they could be there too. The ones outside where just as bright and just as loud and just as startling, and when they had started, she'd frozen in the hallway, not sure what exactly was happening.

It didn't take her long to figure it out, but it also didn't seem to be stopping any time soon, so Sharon had decided to go to where it was quieter. The sub-basement was far enough underground that she probably wouldn't be able to hear them, even if she wasn't in her people form.

As soon as she got on the floor, she leaned forward, dropping to the ground in housecat form to pad silently down the hallway to the control room. When she got there, there was already someone else in there - the girl called Kitty. She was talking to the air (people did a lot of that in the control room), and Sharon didn't want to interrupt, so she hopped up onto the other chair and looked up at the screens, listening to what Kitty person was saying.

Kitty looked over when the purple cat jumped onto the chair beside her and grinned, "Hi, Sharon."

She offered the little cat her hand at a respectable distance by way of greeting. Kitty was, in the binary system, a cat person, since her grandparents had all kept cats. It wasn't that she didn't love dogs--she did--but she grew up with cats.

"Let's have some music, set volume to three," She requested, prompting Jarvis to begin playing a classical tune, very softly, from the speakers.

Bobby didn't want to go outside. Though it'd be the best - and clearest - view, it would also be where everyone else was, and he didn't want to be with them just then. It would be too much. His partner, as always, had made sure to confront him about it before leaving, himself, for the roof. As long as Bobby watched - which he'd likely be quizzed about after, though it had always been his intent to watch - Jean-Paul seemed okay with letting him do it his own way. And he was thankfully not bodily dragged to an event which would likely be a heavy concentration of their numbers.

He also knew he would not be the only one with no desire to go outside amongst the crowd. Might as well be anti-social together. Besides, Warren had the best view from inside.

He'd seen the ice park, of course. Couldn't have missed it if he'd tried. And he'd watched, both from the roof and the sky, as so many of the mansion's residents had taken advantage of it. It wasn't in his own nature to do so, of course, not without Bobby actually haranguing him into doing so, and thus he had limited himself to watching. Faintly amused by the sight of some of the other residents contorting themselves into a space designed for children though, true to form, just large enough for adults to contort themselves into for maximum entertainment value. Except Bobby wasn't there to point and laugh and lead the way, which made the whole display seem vaguely alien and unreal.

And now it seemed most of the compound's population was gathering on the roof or the lawn to watch Jubilee's fireworks. He wouldn't pretend he wasn't looking forward to the display; they'd have been well worth watching all on their own, but they'd be particularly stunning over the glittering ice sculptures. Fortunately, his room provided the ideal view, as he wasn't particularly enamored of the idea of dealing with the crowd on the roof.

He didn't bother to knock, just turned the knob and wandered in. Didn't mark a greeting, didn't smile. It was an odd shift to be sure, but a natural one that found Warren and himself in a sort of gravitational alignment. There was never any discussion or a push toward discussion, there was just existing. And acknowledging that existence, and marking it as special.

Closing the door behind him, he crossed to Warren, joining him just as the light show began.
