	Oh yes. By the time I was a lad the only people in service were the ones who volunteered. Well, we were paid, but it was optional. And that's very admirable! 	That's very interesting. I'm amazed they managed to get enough manpower that way, but I suppose it was still considered something of a honor? That's really not necessary, but I appreciate the thought. I'm sorry to hear that. I somehow managed to come home with all of my limbs, not everyone was so fortunate. It is rather tricky, yes. 	No, not really. I don't think dying in a puddle of mud and being eaten by rats because a few powerful men want to be a little bit more powerful is something admirable. Don't get me wrong, I volunteered. There wasn't really anything else to do. Jesus, I even thought it could be fun. There even are a few good memories but the shit outweighs the rest. The Great War, old sport! I accepted a commission as a first lieutenant in 1917. I commanded the machine gun regiment at Argonne, and we moved half a mile further than the infantry could. We stayed there two nights, a hundred and thirty men with only sixteen guns, but when they caught up with us there were three German divisions among the dead. I was promoted to major, and every Allied government gave me a decoration.
