Awful lot of ex-servicemen and women here...

Women? Yes, indeed. Is that unusual?

No no, not unusual. But there are a lot of people here who once fought for their country or land or beliefs and some point. Lots of people with experiences in wars. It's just interesting. Especially since so many of them don't talk about it.

Perhaps it is something that connects us together. Where I am from, most everyone had seen some service. It's just not something terribly pleasant to discuss over brunch, I suppose.

No, no, I suppose you're right there. It's not mandatory, where I came from, so I was surprised to find so many people from my time had been in the army. What were you? 1920s, you say? Must have been the Great War then, hm?

You volunteered for service? That is most admirable. That's right, old sport. I had reached the rank of major by the time the war was over.

Sorry, I didn't introduce myself formally. You were a captain, weren't you? I don't know where I heard that. I, too. But RAF.

Oh, I mean someone who has fought for their country or who has been to war for something.

And service women. You're equally as important, keeping all of us rowdy chaps in line.

Oh of course. My commanding officer was a woman. Brilliant lady, very charismatic. Still bossing everyone around long after I had to leave for being weak and injured.

I was thinking more along the lines of us being rather well protected. As long as none of us have conflicts or were on opposing sides. That would be most unfortunate.

Oh I think it more difficult. It isn't enough to say we have experience. We have no leader and no cause for which to join together.

Protected, certainly, but protective of only our own interests.

I think there are few enough of us that survival is our common cause. I think if something came to threaten us here we would work together without question, but your opinion on this is very valid, yes. I understand what you're saying.

Whilst that is true, that doesn't really explain why so many of us were in armies, really.

I meant anyone who had seen war, anyone who had fought bravely for something they believed in.

So yes, warriors indeed.

Is it bravery to fight? Sometimes I wonder. I have done my fair share of it, but sometimes I wonder if the bravest are not those who sue for peace against all odds.

Indeed, it does seem that way, doesn't it, monsieur? I, too, was in a war - though - an entirely different sort of war... A civil war, in fact, i believe it would be termed in muggle terminology. [Sorry for the tautology, there; my brother would have nitpicked it out, but... I don't know...!]

[Apologies for any missteps with my fingers [mis-fingers, i suppose you'd call them?] here, as I am only just getting used to this... Keyboard thingummy! I mean, honestly, we didn't have this sort of thing back in my day...!]
